  1. Without knowing the details of the deal, I would argue that other things require our attention first. But it may look like a sensible precaution in the long run.

  3. As it's a rumor, I won't assume the Brewers are thinking anything. But yeah, there's no good reason to push Shaw out in favor of Moustakas. His offensive value is comparable and his defensive value is superior.
  4. A plus fielder at second base. Hoping for a repeat of 2014 might be too much to ask for, but last year was pretty good. Not sure I'm for trading while there are guys available who wouldn't cost players, but he'd be acceptable to me.
  5. Centerfield wrote: Trying to pin down what’s going the other way. Would have preferred McCutchen to Bruce. I'm going to disagree. Cutch's defensive value has deteriorated to the point where he'd be a liability even at a corner, and Bruce played well in right last year. Plus Bruce cost no players.
  6. Regnault's walk rate is a little high, but you have to like that he keeps the ball in the park. And he held his own in the unfriendly confines of Las Vegas. I don't see any reason not to give him a look, as I expect the competition for the back three spots to be wide open. PJ Conlon finished the year at Binghamton pitching out of the pen. I wouldn't expect him to get a long look this spring, but he's a viable long-term option.
  7. They still have better places to spend their resources, but if minimal resources were spent, it's OK.
  8. He's actually under contract for over a million dollars this year. I thought that was a joke, but it won't be if he's reinstated. He is singularly unworthy of a major-league deal at this point.
  9. Like I said in the arbitration post, trading for Ramos at the deadline looks very bad right now. I think Reed would have improved the Mets more than Bruce does, unless the Conforto injury is worse than it looks. But I'll judge the offseason when it is over.
  10. Given that there are better relievers than Ramos still on the market, that trade looks bad right now. On edit: the Reed signing makes trading for Ramos look even worse.

    Duda redo?

It's possible that Duda is available at a bargain-basement price. That might make it worth seeing what Smith could bring back, but we'd probably be selling low on a guy who actually had a very high percentage of hard-hit balls but was criminally unlucky. There's no good reason to think Smith will suck long-term. Demoting Smith is an option, but I'm inclined to think that Las Vegas doesn't help hitting prospects any. In other words, call me back when the infield is solid, the pitching is much improved, and we still have some cash left over.
  12. They still have bigger needs, but they got good value. As long as the bigger needs (pitching, second base, did I mention pitching?) are well addressed in time for the season I'm for it. Like I said in the other thread, I'll worry about too much depth on the active roster when it actually happens. As it stands, the Mets can contend with the outfield they have.
  13. I considered the outfield more of a luxury than a necessity compared to second base and especially compared to pitching. But if those other needs get filled well, then I have no problem at all with this. If Conforto is not a good bet to be ready by Opening Day, I would not be too quick to push Lagares or Nimmo out the door. I'll worry about having too much depth on the active roster when we actually have too much depth on the active roster.
  14. Yeah, it seems like a waste of resources.
  15. He's no longer viable in center. He was worth 2.5 WAR in a full season, Lagares was worth 1.8 WAR in slightly more than half. If you go get somebody, make sure he makes the team better.
  16. I just noticed that the Orioles took Nestor Cortes from the Yankees in the Rule V (they had the 11th selection, we were #6). 23-year-old lefty with a career 2.08 ERA in the minors, including a 1.49 ERA and 57/11 K/BB in 48 homerless innings of AAA last year. Does our pen have too much depth?
  17. Lance Lynn had TJS in the fall of 2015, returned this past season with his stuff nowhere near 100%, and managed a better ERA (and ERA+) than either Darvish or Arrieta. My gut tells me he's more fully recovered this coming season, and provides at least equal value to the top two for half the price. My concern with Cain is that defensive value has a way of declining faster than offensive value, and he will require at least a four-year commitment. There are too many second basemen better than Frazier that can be had.
  18. His defensive value is still very solid, if not 2014 solid. The problem is, his hitting numbers have been consistent enough to make you doubt he can do better, and it's hard to start him when you have two unproven commodities in Rosario and Smith, plus catchers in d'Arnaud and Plawecki who may or may not step up their game this year. And he's getting paid to be a starter. It's a tough call, in my book. I guess it would depend for me on whether a different GM is more bullish on him than I am.
  19. When I think of Minaya's international scouting, I think of Jennry Mejia and that outfielder (whose name I have already forgotten) who were supposed to be precocious talents, but were actually juicers who peaked in AA. It's not a good impression.

A neutral deal for the Nats. he's younger than Adam Lind but he's basically Adam Lind, slightly cheaper. This doesn't make the Nationals better in any way, though it didn't stop hack Joel Sherman from skewering the Mets for it. Adams is a better fielder than Lind, in addition to being younger and cheaper. It fully replaces a valuable player from last year's team without hurting their ability to make other moves. As for skewering the Mets... it's not about money, at that price. Making room on the 25 for two left-handed first basemen is difficult. You could demote Smith, but (a) I'm convinced that Las Vegas is part of the problem where developing hitters is concerned, ( he's not going to have a .218 BABIP again, and © at some point you have show confidence in your young guys to play through initial struggles, otherwise you never develop anybody.
  21. Matt Adams to the Nationals for 1 year and 4 million. A good deal for the Nats, unfortunately. Yonder Alonso gets two years and 16 million from the Indians. Carlos Santana should be extra nice to his agent this Christmas.
  22. If trading Ramos gets us a good second baseman and a contract for Addison Reed, that's win-win.
  23. Gonzalez has enough of a track record to warrant a major league deal, which means he will probably go to the team that gives him the clearest path to playing time. I'm not sure that's us -- I would think that an AL team that did not have a set DH would be a more viable option from his perspective -- but I see no reason not to call his agent and chat.
  24. Now that the Phillies have greatly inflated the market for first basemen, I don't anticipate any sneaky bargains here.
  25. The Phillies gave $60 million to a guy whose career OPS+ is 1 point higher than Lucas Duda's, at a position where they were already strong, and that's your counter-example for why we need to act now? NO starting pitchers of consequence have come off the market yet. Many good relievers have come off the market, and one of them is coming here. Granted, my plan A for second base (Cozart) is gone, but there are still plenty of options out there (including a two-time All Star we've been linked to in multiple rumors). I'm not going to judge the offseason until April -- or perhaps longer than that, given that we might want to see the new guys play first.
