  1. Turner just saved a run with his glove.
  2. Murph, unlike Bay, sits and waits for the right fastball and sends it way over the right field wall. 4-2.
  3. Some good hustle by Turner, advancing to second on the wild pitch and then getting to third on the flyball to right in spite of a strong throw by Pence. And then Bay strikes out going after two fastballs out of the zone, and Paulino pops out. Sigh.
  4. Nothing like a little power surge to put things right. All three guys needed it, too. I'd almost be surprised if the third base coach for the Astros still has his job tomorrow. That was embarrassing. And then he holds Wallace at third as the tying run with two out. The Astros look need to change more than their owners, although that would be a good start. They look a little too comfortable losing.
  5. The situation is something of a Catch-22, because barring an injury, Rodriguez will finish 55+ games for us if we're winning games at a good clip. The option won't vest if our winning percentage veers south of .450, but does anybody really want that?
  6. Wallace is a prime example of a prospect whose bandwagon filled prematurely and then emptied prematurely. His first 144 ABs in the majors had lots of people writing him off, but he seems to have adjusted. The power may or may not come, but I think he's a legit .300 hitter. Brandon Lyon was ineffective as a closer and then got hurt. The closer of the moment is Mark Melancon, a young guy with a live arm. Wilton Lopez might actually be the better pitcher, but he was just getting back from an injury himself when Lyon went down, and groundball specialists have a way of getting passed over when the closer role is vacant.
  7. A nice win. I think it's clear that Beltran is all the way back with the bat, and from the small bits I've seen of the games he looks to be running better now than he was in April.
  8. I don't like F-Mart being here to sit on the bench. Evans would have made more sense. If he plays poorly he'd clear waivers again, and if he doesn't play poorly Scott Hairston would clear waivers.
  9. I was just going to say that myself. Here comes Frankie. Get the antacid ready.
  10. Every time I think we need to try and find a better centerfield option, Pride comes up with a huge hit. I guess I should think that way more often?
  11. They're hurting in so many spots it's impossible to keep track. And that's just the front office. Thames is on the DL and Jay Gibbons is up. Sands has been playing both left field and first base. His glove in the outfield is apparently quite the adventure. If Loney doesn't get an extra-base hit this series, he will have gone more than a month without one.
  12. I'm sorry, but Lincecum's fastball doesn't have nearly enough movement to explain (or forgive) taking so many of them over the plate for strike three. At least Murphy put up a decent at bat. Before striking out.
  13. And yet, the Mets have a better record on the road.
  14. batmagadanleadoff wrote: "No Major League Uniform Player's Contract or Minor League Uniform Player Contract shall be approved if it contains a bonus for playing, pitching or batting skill or if it provides for the payment of a bonus contingent on the standing of the signing Club at the end of the championship season." The key word in that phrase is "skill." An incentive for games played (or finished) does not depend on how "skillfully" those games were played (or finished). The simple fact that K-Rod's contract gives him a financial motivation to throw gopher balls in tie games on the road should give the league sufficient justification to outlaw that kind of incentive as well. But that's not going to happen retroactively.
  15. Hale and Collins deserve a lot of credit for keeping Reyes from being ejected. Reyes certainly had every right to be as livid as he was. Jerry Hairston acted like he tagged Reyes with his arm off the bag, and the ump somehow bought it. A veteran umpire has no excuse on a play like that. I went into the ninth thinking that would have been a tough way for Beato to lose, and instead it turns into his first big league win. Easily the best win of the year so far. Hopefully it turns the momentum into a juggernaut.

    Uggla

Somebody needs to explain to me how the Marlins are playing so well with Hanley in a rut, Infante not holding up his end of the Uggla deal, and an assortment of third basemen who belong in AA.
  17. Starlin Castro just committed three errors in one inning. How often does that happen?
  18. Through 6. Now this would be a story.
  19. Silly question: How does DJ Carrasco have options?
  20. One one hand, I think I'd rather send Gee back to Buffalo and give him steady innings than jerk him (or one of the other 5) back and forth between starting and relieving. On the other hand, Carrasco's an easy guy to demote because of his contract, and he might benefit from working through some issues in AAA.
  21. The Rockies traded a AA reliever who'll soon be 28 to get a guy who was a starting major leaguer last week. I'm sure we could have found a similar spare part to maintain the rights to Emaus. That being said, I wonder what the Rockies are planning to do with Eric Young Jr.
  22. They have a three-man platoon at first, because Gibson still can't make up his mind between the younger guy (Juan Miranda) who might still be a D-Back when they get good again and the guy who's most likely better right now (Russ Branyan) against righties. We'll see Branyan tonight. Some guy named Ryan Roberts has grabbed the third base job the way we'd like to see somebody grab the second base job here. Their pitching staff makes ours look halfway decent. Hopefully Caps has started a trend.
  23. You really have to like his location on those breaking pitches.
  24. Cohoon, not normally a strikeout pitcher, fanned 11 in 7 innings last night while giving up two unearned runs and notching his first win of the season. His line on the season so far: 3 G, 19.0 IP, 1-0, 0.47 ERA, 16 H, 20 K, 3 BB, 0 HRs allowed. A few more games like this and he'll be shuffling off to Buffalo sooner rather than later. I think the chances of seeing him in Queens in September are at least 50/50 at this point.
  25. I think reason #10 was the best reason not to play for a tie -- our pen just can't be trusted right now. Of course, the first nine reasons all hold, too.
