  1. Utah?
  2. Evans has raised his OPS from .688 to .914 in two days. Hairston's injury might be a blessing in disguise. Somehow, some way, somebody other than Jason Bay needs to be our starting leftfielder next year.

  4. There ain't much to get excited about, unfortunately. Thayer is a ROOGY. Lujan has been decent. It might not be a bad idea to audition Schwinden for a long relief/sixth starter role next year. Mark Cohoon has not handled the jump to AAA well. Mark O'Connor has gone backwards. I could see Lujan and Schwinden being part of next year's pen, but the Mets are really going to need to import some arms.

I can't imagine that the Brewers won't make every effort to hold on to him, and they're my first choice. But the Yankees will have money to spend. I'm not sure if the Cubs have overcommitted themselves financially but they sure could use him.
  6. He's not worth $6M if he pitches like this. But he's pitched much better in the past, and a fifth-starter-by-committee is not likely to outperform a 4.50 ERA. Unless we can get a clear upgrade cheaply, I'm for giving him one more year.
  7. That's a big, happy family. So you pick the one week the Mets are in town to run off and get hitched? Sheesh. Oh, and good luck. Is Elvis presiding over the ceremony?
  8. The Royals just signed Francoeur to an extension. Weren't they supposed to be getting smarter?

    I <3 U 2

After starting the year 2 for 20, his slash line is .310/.394/.513.
  10. Dickey leads the starters in ERA and IP. Given how awful he was the first six weeks of the season, it's impossible to complain about a 3.75 ERA. The record is a reflection of extremely unlucky run support more than anything else. The more I think about the Pelfrey/Trachsel analogy, the more I like it. They're both decent pitchers who showed enough flashes to make some people think they were more than that. But that's OK. I can't imagine anybody really expected Pelfrey to pitch like an ace this year. He may have been the favorite to lead the staff, and it's certainly disappointing that he's been arguably the 5th best starter, but he hasn't been dreadful.

They're playing in the right division this year, and the Mets are playing in the wrong one. Kennedy gives a lot of hope to Jennry Mejia. He was called up a year too early, then lost the following season with an injury. Now he's an ace.
  12. I'm not overly concerned about Pelfrey next year. If (a big if obviously) Johan is healthy, a rotation of Santana, Dickey, Niese, Pelfrey, and Gee does not require tinkering with. Especially if Pelfrey rebounds as he's done twice in the past. Plus, the team has an enormous amount of pitching talent in the pipeline for 2013. I don't think this offseason is the time to consider parting ways with Pelfrey. But that doesn't mean that "shut up and pitch better" wouldn't be very sound advice...
  13. The defensive metrics strongly disagree about Pagan's performance over the past two seasons. UZR has him at +15 runs in center last year and -3 this year, while the Fielding Bible has him at +7 and +4. Naturally, they both average out to about the same.
  14. I just don't get it. As frustrating as the injuries and some of the near misses have been, it's been great fun rooting for the Mets this year. Last night was a perfect example of it.
  15. I believe he has one more year of arbitration left. He could conceivably be non-tendered if Alderson and Collins have gone sour on him, but I'd be surprised if it came to that.
  16. Guzman is proof that there's hope for guys like Nick Evans. He's always hit in the minors, but had few real opportunities before Hawpe got hurt and top prospect Anthony Rizzo fizzled at first asking.
  17. I'm perplexed by Pagan. It's possible he's playing through a nagging injury. Keep in mind that he had been excellent for us for two seasons, not just one, so this season could turn out to be the aberrant one. I'm sure Niewenhuis will get the opportunity to win a job next year, but I'm not ready to hand him Pagan's just yet.
  18. My impression before yesterday, which hasn't changed, is that Murphy is an good major league corner infielder -- his bat will play with an average glove at third, and while he doesn't have a typical first baseman's power he can at least hold his own there. The Mets have better players at both positions (assuming full health), however, and Murphy had too many misadventures in the outfield. (To be fair, his range in the outfield was actually good; it was the routine plays that turned into triples that chased him back to the infield.) That made taking a look at him a second a reasonable experiment. But he's now blown both knees trying to play the position, and you can only try to fit a square peg in a round hole so many times. I think at this point my plan A would be to look for a team who could use Murphy at third or first and has a comparable bat to spare at a position more suitable for us.

  20. OK so what happened? (The GS I know about.)
  21. According to the Fielding Bible, Murphy has been exactly average at third, above average at first (especially on bunts), and below average at second (the big issue being turning two). He has turned some routine plays into misadventures, but his overall defense is sound, and I think most people who follow the Mets can see that. And he's proving that his bat can play at this level. The question remains, can he play second base well enough? I do think that's a question the Mets should try to answer this season. He's welcome to prove me wrong, but my current impression of Turner is that he's a fifth infielder on a winning team. I think Tejada's bat needs to develop further before I'd feel comfortable starting him.
  22. If the Braves make the playoffs by a game and/or the Pirates miss by a game, there will be accountability. It seems like there have been more than the usual number of blown calls this year, but that one tops the list. It wasn't even close.
  23. And again, Duda sits against the righty. He was starting to get warm, which is more than I can say for Bay. I don't see how Turner has earned the right to start over him, either. We still haven't determined if Murphy is our second baseman of the future, which I think is an important goal for the rest of the season. If we can keep sending Thole out to catch Dickey, we can try Duda at first and Murphy at second.
  24. Not that I'm not as happy about it as a non-Pirate fan can be, but even with all the injuries, how are they behind Pittsburgh?
  25. Thole will give you a very good OBP for a catcher, but he has below-average defense and zero power. To me, he's a backup on a good team. From a trade perspective, I know the Reds have a very good ML-ready catching prospect in Devin Mesoraco, but they're starting to fall behind in the NL Central and I'm not sure how wiling they are to make a deal.
