  1. Imagine what he could do with a lighter bat.
  2. When I played little league in upstate NY, our teams were named after indigenous Native American tribes. Senecas, Iroquois, Oneidas, Cayugas, Mohawks, and so on.
  3. Unfuckinbelievable.
  4. That ball was smoked.
  5. I remember watching him play in the Cape League, and he was a monster even then. He destroyed baseballs, and he was actually pretty good defensively too. He made a play at 1B where he had to field a throw from 3B that was to his right, up the RF line, and he sort of stretched / dove to get it - backhanded - on that weird in-between hop that was coming up on him, keeping his toe on the bag. Sickness. Seeing him win the HR hitting contest was cool too though. After games, they'd allow fans onto the field to rub elbows with players, and I took the opportunity to snag a few of his autographs. Makes me feel old that he's finished, but he had a great career.
  6. Still alive. http://macksmets.blogspot.com/2009/11/q-p-michael-hebert.html
  7. Messed around with OOTP a little last night. It's got so much more depth than Puresim ever had. I'm a little overwhelmed by it so far, actually. The financial model alone could be a game by itself.
  8. I'm gonna laugh about ***SWOON-BONER-SWOON!!!*** for years. YEARS.

  10. I always think of Gregg Jefferies, for what it's worth. He got a cup of coffee in '87, then came up a few days before September in '88. But that was a hell of a September.
  11. ="Kong76":243j8yoi]that may the first one to end a game.[/quote:243j8yoi] Pretty sure you're right. bmfc1 Aug 23 2009 02:48 PM Second time in history. Jayson Stark is so happy, he tweeted over and over. http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1927/B05310DET1927.htm bmfc1 Aug 23 2009 02:50 PM I can't believe that Jerry wasn't asked about sending the runners. Maybe he was and FAN didn't play it. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Aug 23 2009 03:07 PM ="bmfc1"]What was the point of putting the runners in motion? If Jerry doesn't, that's a single and the bases are loaded w/none out. If they're down by one, OK but two? No, especially when the trail runner, the important runner because he's the tying run, is slow. Classic over-managing by Jerry. You're fucking kidding me. I can't fucking believe that he would try and fucking do that. Next, you'll fucking tell me that Angel Hernandez tried to insert himself into a fucking ballgame. Imfuckingpossible. Fuck. May 31, 1927 was the other time (Johnny Neun, liner-step-tag for Detroit, preserving a 1-0 win over Cleveland). G-Fafif Aug 23 2009 04:57 PM I thought it was pretty incredible that I went to a game and saw two three-run homers in the top of the first, a starter pulled with a 3-0 count to the opposing pitcher after 45 pitches, a leadoff inside-the-park homer in the bottom of the first, a triple follow that, a poor-hitting pitcher drive in a run, the inside-the-park homer-hitter hit a homer outside the park and the return of an icon to face his old club. Also, Pat Misch in the middle innings giving up nothing was pretty special. Apparently, prior to the ninth, I hadn't seen nothing yet. In related news, I learned from those sitting around me that the Beach Boys of Mike Love were a lock to sing the National Anthem (they didn't); that Carlos Delgado has an option for next year (he doesn't); that Billy Wagner couldn't be used because once you're claimed on waivers you're ineligible (no such rule exists); and that Wagner, warming up in the bullpen wears No. 34 (Wagner wears 13; Mike Pelfrey wears 34; the pitcher warming up was No. 64, Elmer Dessens). Is said threshold more dependent on the egregiousness of the error, or is it based more on the scholar's/s' volume? Nymr83 Aug 23 2009 05:09 PM you get alot of that, at weekend day games especially. i've found the people sitting around me to be much smarter on freezing cold or rainy weeknights in April. i guess theres something about the early start and the heat that attracts the morons who would never show up to watch a game in the cold after work on a thursday G-Fafif Aug 23 2009 05:16 PM ="Nymr83":1ir3j8vb]you get alot of that, at weekend day games especially. i've found the people sitting around me to be much smarter on freezing cold or rainy weeknights in April. i guess theres something about the early start and the heat that attracts the morons who would never show up to watch a game in the cold after work on a thursday[/quote:1ir3j8vb] Of course when the morons who would never show up to watch a game in the cold after work on a Thursday are warm in their homes, they may divine a sense of intellectual superiority over those of us shivering at the ballpark despite our working knowledge of rosters and rules. bmfc1 Aug 23 2009 05:16 PM Here's something else for this bizarre baseball day: a Mets minor leaguer threw a no-hitter! http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2009_08_23_broasx_abeasx_1 G-Fafif Aug 23 2009 05:36 PM From Brandon Moore, no-hit whiz of Coney Island: ]"I love playing in Brooklyn. They say it's the closest you can get to playing in the big leagues without playing in the big leagues." And I thought that's what they said about the Mets.
  12. Amazing. Well, I've always wondered if I'd ever see an unassisted triple play... I guess I can cross it off the list now.
  13. Looks that way. He didn't join the team late July though, a month later than everyone else.
  14. At the end of last season it was pretty obvious that Mike was going to have to quit walking so many batters, and it looks like he's making progress. Last season: 21 IP, 29 BB This season: 23.1 IP, 13 BB Also, his ground ball percentage is up to 63% - from 34% last season.
  15. From Kevin Burkhardt via Twitter: "Chances the D-backs score after their leadoff double - 100%"
  16. You know, I just realized... watching this team in the field reminds me of the time I played intramural softball, and one game we had like 3 players who didn't show up and we decided to try playing anyway.
  17. Well, these beers aren't gonna drink themselves.
  18. ="seawolf17":10fd64sa]Interesting that "John Ricco" and "Adam Rubin" have the same number of letters. There's a conspiracy afoot.[/quote:10fd64sa] Did you guys know John Ricco has a secretary named Rubin, and Adam Rubin has a secretary named Ricco? Benjamin Grimm Aug 11 2009 09:10 AM ="John Cougar Lunchbucket":21qhopfe]Omar btw, was in Buffalo yesterday to personally apologize for that debacle of a farm team, mentioning they signed Jason Dubois so as to improve it. [/quote:21qhopfe] Did he keep his shirt on? metsguyinmichigan Aug 11 2009 09:11 AM We keep forgetting that the team was in first place prior to losing everybody. I don't know if there are too many team who could sustain such losses. Blame Omar for the horrid off-season two years ago, but he's been on more than he's been off. But I might start wondering about the training staff. You can't blame them for Church getting a concussion from getting whacked in head with a knee, but there sure have been a lot of other problems and the sheer volume makes you wonder if they're doing something wrong. Vic Sage Aug 11 2009 09:22 AM ="metsguyinmichigan":350jsmxr]We keep forgetting that the team was in first place prior to losing everybody. [/quote:350jsmxr] That's totally disingenuous. They were under .500 when the bodies started dropping, after failing to make the playoffs since Beltran watched strike 3. John Cougar Lunchbucket Aug 11 2009 09:27 AM I think if there was a time Omar should have been whacked it was last off-season, seeing as the all-stars he assembled nearly all performed to the best of their abilities and they still shat the bed because he did such a rotten job of addressing the bullpen/bench before and during the season. He also had the Willie debacle to answer for. I think Omar did a decent job of improving that depth and flexibility for this year, but the injuries just go to show how wasted an opportunity last year was. soupcan Aug 11 2009 09:39 AM You guys are making me sad. Edgy DC Aug 11 2009 09:45 AM ="Nymr83":138c2a9j]If they get rid of Omar they should really CLEAN HOUSE and get rid of everyone from the Omar or Phillips era left in the front office.[/quote:138c2a9j] And I hope they're a lot more deliberate and less bloodthirsty than that. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Aug 11 2009 10:27 AM ="seawolf17"]="John Cougar Lunchbucket"]He said that farm director Adam Wogin was given Bernazard's responsibilities following the whacking but that ... wait for it ... "the entire hierarchy would be reevaluated after the season." Wait, wait, wait. After the whole Adam Rubin-pining-for-a-job escapade, they replace Bernazard with a guy named "Adam Wogin"?!? That's hilarious. This guy was taken. (If running a farm system isn't "Foreign Assets Control," what is it?) LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Aug 11 2009 07:07 PM Finally got around to actually reading the Rubin article. ]Minaya credited Ricco with proposing the Francoeur-for-Ryan Church swap that was swiftly executed a month ago, but Ricco's background primarily is administrative and not in evaluating players - more along the lines of former GM Jim Duquette than Minaya. As a result, Ricco likely would need to lean on his deputies for recommendations. Is nobody else getting a Harazin-like whiff here? (Non-player eval guy who didn't seem to let that get in the way of his getting hipdeep in player eval once the opportunity arose...) metirish Aug 11 2009 07:38 PM I hope Ricco suave doesn't like Grudzielanek Ashie62 Aug 11 2009 08:10 PM I don't think Rubin has an axe here. Ricco would appear to be in training for a promotion A change in appearance and voice from Omar..thats for sure I hope he is not better suited to do morning swauk on cnbc This is an ill franchise Mex17 Aug 12 2009 04:33 AM ="metsguyinmichigan":wysemdh8]You can't blame them for Church getting a concussion from getting whacked in head with a knee[/quote:wysemdh8] No, but you can certainly blame them for making him endure multiple transcontinental flights after the incident.
  19. ="DocTee":27qkrg71] Is there no God?[/quote:27qkrg71] Not at Yankee Stadium, no. Elster88 Aug 09 2009 08:56 PM For some reason the Yankees make me dislike Steve Phillips more. Frayed Knot Aug 09 2009 09:26 PM The Yanquis make me dislike life more. Sawx finally score and even take a lead (2R HR from Victor Matinez) but then promptly cough up 4 runs and blow the game. If (say) the Phils romp to a 100 win season I can sell myself the concept that at least they were really good, and then chortle when they lose in the first round of the divisional series. However if the Marlins end up winning it with 88 games I go HOLY FUCK 88 GAMES. WE COULDN'T EVEN WIN 88 GAMES??????? IN A DIVISION WITH WASHINGTON?????? or something like that. MFS62 Aug 10 2009 12:05 PM Mike Francessa just said on WFAN that A-Rod's home run in the 15 th inning really wasn't a pressure situation because if they don't score there, they just play another inning.
