When I started a little design business on the side, my first business cards were made to look like baseball cards. I never finished them, but they would have been awesome. I'm pretty sure I used the 1976 Topps Hank Aaron card as a base to work from, and just changed his name to mine. I left the picture of him on it though. Had I kept going, the back was going to have all kinds of work-related stats for my entire career... such as hours of sleep lost, and gallons of coffee consumed... you get the idea.

I love the Anglers' logo. And check out the size of that park.

="Fman99":1nck7ucl] Interesting read from ESPN[/url:1nck7ucl] on a kid in the MFYs farm system, pitching in A ball as both a lefty and a righty.[/quote:1nck7ucl] Remember this video from last year? Switch pitcher faces switch hitter, hijinks ensue. Frayed Knot May 06 2009 12:01 PM ="Benjamin Grimm":3orw5t70]And my brother-in-law insists that it's harder to hit a golf ball than a baseball.[/quote:3orw5t70] He is aware that the golf ball is stationary while the baseball is decidedly not, right? Benjamin Grimm May 06 2009 12:08 PM I pointed that out. He says that he hits the ball better in a batting cage than he does on a golf course. I didn't care to prolong the argument. Frayed Knot May 06 2009 05:49 PM Keith's reading the 'Pool' again - this time he's talking about changing stances within the batters box. Coincidence? ... I don't think so!! Kong76 May 06 2009 07:12 PM Keith doesn't strike me as one to be huddled over a laptop reading baseball message boards while working and certainly not while outside the booth. He could be reading over someone's shoulder, but that's purely conjecture on my part. Frayed Knot May 06 2009 07:38 PM I don't actually think he's reading here either - but hearing him take up seperate CPF discussions on two consecutive nights is pretty funny. Frayed Knot May 07 2009 07:46 AM Hey Keith (and we know you're reading) your CPF choice discussion topics for tonight are: 1) playing the line vs not in late-inning, close-game situations or 2) did Pres Lincoln choose to start an unnecessary war rather than opting for negotiations as a reaction to southern secession due to pressure from northern industrialists and their powerful representatives in Congress? soupcan May 07 2009 08:03 AM You just reminded me... I was paying attention to where guys were standing in the box last night and snapped this shot of Utley.. At what point does an umpire say 'Dude, get back in the box..!" His back foot is clearly out of the box - what's up with that? Is he automatically out if he hits a fair ball? What's the rule? Frayed Knot May 07 2009 08:08 AM Rule says you need to be in the box and can be called out if not. Now if the ump doesn't say anything (or catcher doesn't ask) prior to the pitch I'm sure he's not going to flag him after he hits on into the gap. But I know Aaron lost one HR when called out for stepping out of the box as he swung and I'm sure there have been others.

I'm so sick and tired of "professional" ballplayers.

John Cougar Lunchbucket Apr 24 2009 12:22 PM He tells the Bobby in disguise story. I like that he puts it in context of how crazy that whole time was. Edgy DC Apr 24 2009 12:28 PM Edited 5 time(s), most recently on Apr 24 2009 01:31 PM ="metirish"]Can't view that here at work , it's Bobby V doing what? It's amazing. He's flying with a jet pack, taking out Sudanese government goons from the air. They're mockingly harassing the civilian population, and then --- BAM! --- they never see it coming. The next shot is him in a government lab, working on a chemical that neutralizes atomic waste. The math on the blackboard is a seemingly incomprehensible jumble, and when the blackboard fills up, one of the scientists gets up to get him a rolling blackboard, to expand his work. "DON'T MOVE an INCH, CHEN TSOI!" Bobby says in what I assume is flawless Cantonese, but I can only tell from the subtitles, "If you move, your train of thought goes. Our work is TOO IMPORTANT!" He pulls a sharpie out of his pocket, and completes the formula on the wall. As he starts doling compound-mixing assignments among the gathered white coats in the room --- several Nobel laureates among them, recognizeable because they are wearing their badges --- he pulls out a can of spray polyurethane from the pocket of his lab coat, and coats the blackboard. The work is too important! Finally it cuts to a black-and-white shot of him competing for USC in the 1970 NCAA ballroom dancing finals. He and his partner --- perhaps four inches taller than him in her heels, are ripping (absolutely ripping) through a dazzling mazurka, and then at the climax, he does this giant kick forward and then one turn together clockwise suddenly. On one hand, his partner looks surprised, as if he's improvising. On the other, she's delighted and completely gives herself to him, and folds into his arms with the trust of a child before throwing her head back with the passion of a woman. The crowd explodes into spontaneous standing applause, and though she's merely his dance partner, she lays a passionate kiss on Bobby like she'd take him right there and then, but he gives her that smile we're used to, confident but a little in pain, and the mic picks up his gentle aside: "Don't move. I think I just broke my ankle." It's too bad you can't see it. metirish Apr 24 2009 12:31 PM Hilarious! LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Apr 24 2009 12:40 PM Slow clap to you, Edge. I've had it saved as a text document forever. metirish Apr 21 2009 08:38 AM Oh wow , love that post....some great lines in there , so many in fact.... ] The Stockard Channing girl turned around to me. "Are you all right?" "Yeah, yeah," I go. "It's just... boy they were squeezing Cookie out there." She goes, like, "Whatever." Probably didn't know what "squeezing" or "Cookie" meant. that just made me laugh out loud . If you have not read this take the 10 minutes or whatever and read it. There is a story behind it and I know I asked the last time but I have forgotten. Willets Point Apr 21 2009 08:39 AM Classic "sports" writing right there. Is this the game Big Al attended: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1999/B09280NYN1999.htm Edgy DC Apr 21 2009 08:57 AM If sports columns read like that, papers wouldn't be dying. Frayed Knot Apr 21 2009 10:54 AM ="metirish":pouc9sql]There is a story behind it and I know I asked the last time but I have forgotten.[/quote:pouc9sql] 'Big Al' was - or at least claimed to be - a left-handed pitcher whose career was scuttled by injuries while in the minor leagues. By the time we "met" him he was a (40-ish?) NYC-living, divorced father who regaled us with his bouts with his ex-wife, with bosses at his dead-end job, and, at least occasionally, the bottle. No one that I know of from that earlier forum ever actually met him so there's no way of knowing how much of that back-story was true. But, either way, he was a helluva entertaining writer and served as a curmudgeonly mature voice to a forum which was, for the most part, very young and given to wild swings of emotion. He would frequently disappear for long stretches of time only to return for brief flurries of posts. It's also possible that 'Big Al' was merely an alternate identity for a regular poster but, if so, no one ever owned up. Centerfield Apr 21 2009 12:30 PM I used to think it was a nice piece of fiction penned by Big Ralph, but over the years I've become less convinced. GYC Apr 21 2009 02:11 PM It reads as if Charles Bukowski wrote it. I'm a fan; of Bukowski and this, I mean. Methead Apr 23 2009 08:00 PM Edgy DC Apr 23 2009 08:35 PM Wow. It looks like a Conor McPherson play. Kong76 Apr 24 2009 04:15 AM Someone here has to know who Big Al really was. If it's been ten years I'd say the statute of limitations is up and the mystery ended. I have my guess hermetically sealed in a mayonnaise jar and I want to open it NOW!!! Edgy DC Apr 24 2009 05:15 AM The post predates my intenet insanity. Al supposedly re-surfaced --- posting as You Know Me, Al --- at the MOFo for a few weeks during my tenure. A Boy Named Seo Apr 24 2009 09:48 AM That "Christ. This world is fucked up, get me a beer," thing at the sausage cart gets me every time. Fman99 Apr 24 2009 09:58 AM Come back, Big Al. John Cougar Lunchbucket Apr 24 2009 10:07 AM There were about a half-dozen that year that were just as good if not better -- that one just happened to be the only one that survived. My favorite was called "Valentine's Magical Thinking" which involved an analysis of Valentine's style and set within a tale of a visit to the Village Idiot bar. Edgy DC Apr 24 2009 10:12 AM There's got to be a way to recover them from the internet archives. soupcan Apr 24 2009 10:22 AM ="John Cougar Lunchbucket":8b670l7z]...the Village Idiot bar.[/quote:8b670l7z] Used to have best juke box in the City. John Cougar Lunchbucket Apr 24 2009 10:26 AM That was part of his story! He described it playing "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" by David Allen Coe, only he didn;t know the singer or the song, and was shocked when I replied with the lyrics. Edgy DC Apr 24 2009 10:30 AM I'm able to dig deep enough to get old forum pages listing thread titles, but not the threads themselves. I'm so addicted to Puresim Baseball it's not even funny. I use fictional players though, so I don't really have any fun Mets parallels I can make.

I don't like the Joe Smith / Sean Green part of it... other than that, bring it on.
