  9. Neyer thinks Ike and Angel didn't get serious consideration because they're Mets. http://sports.espn.go.com/blog/SweetSpot/post/_/id/6258/nl-gold-gloves-hold-few-surprises At least he takes a parting shot at Jeter. Later
  10. John Buck is a 30 year old, right handed hitting, All Star catcher. He hit 20 home runs last year and made $2 million. Since I can't be him, I'd like to be his agent. Later
  11. A Boy Named Seo wrote: Wonder how much input & how much weight his opinions are gonna carry w/ the Nerd Herd? They need him because he's probably the only one left around who can match most of the faces to the names throughout the organization. The managers could do that for just the guys they managed. Without him, guys will be given those "Hello! My name is __________ " badges when the GM and his crew show up at Spring Training. Later
  12. tex and cano have decidedly mediocre UZRs, per fangraphs. jeter's is not good, but still slightly ahead of jose's. top UZRs belong to the following al'ers: 1b daric barton 12.7 | lyle overbay 0.1 | 5 of 8 mark teixiera -2.9 2b mark ellis 9.8 | orlando hudson 9.7 | 5 of 8 robinson cano -0.6 ss alexei ramirez 10.8 | cliff pennington 9.9 | 7 of 9 derek jeter -4.7 3b kevin kouzmanoff 16.1 | adrian beltre 11.8 | 3 of 8 evan longoria 11.1 rf ichiro suzuki 15.6 | j.d. drew 3.8 cf julio borbon 8.9 | franklin gutierrez 7.3 lf brett gardner 22.3 | carl crawford 18.5 well, the voters did better in the outfield at least... Wait a minute, Derek Jeter had a worse UZR than Seven of Nine? As Gwreck pointed out, Jeter was 59th out of 59 shortstops in Total Zone Rating. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/AL/2010-specialpos_ss-fielding.shtml#players_standard_fielding::13 This year he showed the range of a manhole cover. This was tuchus licking of the highest (or is it lowest?) magnitude. Later

Which is the opposite of what would happen if Mr. Payton took a job with the University of San Francisco - because then you could say that Jay is now a Don. I'm impressed. LOL! As for managerial strategy. Sometimes you have to do what it takes to win. The other night, the 1955 World Series was on tv (Brooklyn beating the MFYs). In the seventh game, Brooklyn manager Walter Alston had power hitter Duke Snider sacrifice bunt what was to become the second run in a 2-0 victory into scoring position. But there is a big difference between doing the unexpected that turns out OK and doing something out of rote because it is someone's "style" of managing. Later
  15. The late night guy on ESPN radio in NY, Bill Daughtry, is a virulent Yankee fan (and also roots for all the NY teams I don't root for, but that's another issue). Thank goodness his predictions and pronouncements seem to be running over 90% wrong. (The one I remember most was saying that Michael Vick would sign with a minor league football team, not an NFL team). He says he would vote for (in addition to Boss George, natch) Steve Garvey! I hope he's wrong again. My only exec vote in this crew goes to Marvin Miller. My player votes would go to Al Oliver and Ted Simmons if they were only a tad better. Later

Lee Sr. was such a good hitter they moved Tony Perez to third to make room for him at first base. When that didn't work out, IIRC they tried it the other way around for a while. Later

  24. Wasn't there a thread that led to a question about opponents of the 1986 team who still played into the 21st Century? Was it spun off or renamed? I posted an answer and am trying to find out if I was correct. Later
  25. There is a sign right inside every major league baseball clubhouse door that clearly spells out the prohibition against gambling. As Clubhouse Manager , he must have walked past that sign thousands of times. Maybe he was the person who hung the sign in the first place. How [crossout:2xertob6]ironic[/crossout:2xertob6] stupid would that be? Later
