Edgy DC wrote: Joel Sherman published the following cryptic tweet: All Ollie Perez stories must cease now until one begins: The #Mets today released Ollie Perez ... #notinteresting Which was cryptic enough that folks misinterpeted it to read that the Mets had, in fact, released liver Prez, which they of course had not. It was a small seismic tremor in the blogosphere. You could feel it if you were on a high floor. Joel Sherman must love messing with the heads of Mets fans, sending a message that could be so easily misinterpreted.. Later
  2. He'll make the team, then surprise everyone when he pitches so well that, if Omar were still here, he'd give him a contract extension. OK, so I'm taking the last of my pain pills. Never mind. Later
  3. Edgy DC wrote: You and Odalis Perez. And maybe his family. LOL! Later
  4. If the Mets wanted to take a chance on a relatively young (about 33) lefthander who hadn't pitched in the majors for a while, what about Oldlis Perez? He had simlar (if not slightly better) success as Ollie, and they were both free agents. I have always thought the Mets should have signed him instead of the other O. Perez. And he isn't coming back off an injury, just a contract dispute and (maybe) being given the reputation as a hothead and blackballed when he refused to report to the minors. Later
  5. Ceetar wrote: Or..Warthen was a big part of what got Meija into the pen to begin with last year. I'm hoping this isn't the same kind of self-fulfilling prophesy (I told you he's a reliever, dammit! so that's where I'm going to put him.) that sent Terry Leach back to the bullpen after he had proven that he could be an effective starter. Later
  6. Mashing the crap out of lefties, mostly sitting against righties. Counting stats will depend on ABs. Vs lefties: .325/ .365/ . 450 Vs righties: ???? Later
  7. Just curious. With Ed Kranepool's name being mentioned in stories about potential new ownership offers, has the CPF been experiencing an increase in hits to the site? Any way to check that out? Later
  8. The first hint of a sale will be when they re-name the stadium "Debits Field". Later
  9. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Interesting. I would think that a scout should focus on both. You want to know the weaknesses of the potential acquisitions, as well as the strengths of potential opponents. I agree. But I'm not sure if this is consistently done. Seems like more than a few times that a pitcher just up from the minors does well in his first few starts because his opponents look like they have absolutely no idea what he throws. Later
  10. Edgy DC wrote: Valadius wrote: I'm sorry, it sounds way too much like something someone calling Francesa would cook up in their head. Cuban would never, ever be a minority partner in anything. And he would never get in bed with the Dolans. I call bullshit. Well, get in line. On the other hand, like Marshall Crenshaw said, something's gonna happen. I hope that Dolan isn't part of that deal. I don't want to see Isiah Thomas as GM of the Mets. Later
  11. attgig wrote: starting 2b, and remains so through the whole year, showing better defense than anyone expected. Agreed. But I'll put his counting stats at .278, 35 2B, 12 HR, 75 RBI. Later
  12. Lefties develop later. In his case, later than 2011. He has the stuff, now he must get some stamina to be able to emerge as a top left hander. I expect a very Jon Matlackian type year, a game or two over .500 (maybe 13-12) with a good ERA.(3.56) Not chopped liver. Later
  13. I think he'll listen to the folks who are wrting that when Beltran is traded (or leaves the team after the season), he will have a chance for the big bucks as the star centerfielder. So, he will try to pad his stats in anticipation of the pay day in the sky. He start putting a power swing on everything, take a ride on the grand funk railroad (thank yuh, thank yuh very much) and have numbers like: .255/ .270/ . 375. (20 2B, 6 3B, 9 HR in counting stats , for those of you who are counting.) However, he may earn his first gold glove for his supurb play in center. Later

    oh-for-ten

Well, he says he's going to start a new list (for the remaining nine years of this decade) with the catchers. I hope he's smart enough to name Josh Thole. Later
  17. Frayed Knot wrote: The difference here is that money won or lost had little to do with how smart you were or when you got in or got out and a lot to do with how and when and IF Madoff credited you with "gains" on "investments" that were never made. It's the early investors who usually make out in Ponzi schemes not because they were more timely or smarter but solely on account of being first; you can't screw the first wave because then you'll never get the second and third waves on which the whole scheme depends. Right. Then a lot will depend on whether the Wilpons asked for some money back (for whatever reason) or it was a contracturally scheduled payment, or if it was just given to them by Madoff to attract future investors. The devil will be in the details. Later
  18. I remember when the Hunt Brothers were trying to corner the silver market about 30 years ago. The price went up to over $50 an ounce, until the Fed stepped in. Then, the price dropped like an anchor, to as little as $2 an ounce. Many people bought when the price was rising. If some smart people got out before the drop, were the people who bought high and had to sell low able to sue the ones who got out with a profit? Hardly. That's why it was an investment - they were hoping to make a profit. But there is always risk in an investment. Unless the Wilpons can be proven to have been in on, or part of, the scheme, they should not be liable. Think of what would happen to all the financial markets if this suit were to be allowed. Anyone who lost money on an investment would be able to sue anyone who made a profit. It would result in total chaos. Later

    2011 Roster

2 prospects invited to camp January, 29, 2011 Jan 29 12:00 PM ET By Adam Rubin Outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis and catcher Kai Gronauer are the two prospects not currently on the 40-man roster who have been invited to major league spring training camp. Gronauer, who hails from Germany, and Nieuwenhuis also were in camp last year and represented the Mets in the Arizona Fall League. Terry Collins intends to have a smaller camp this year to maximize instruction and reps for the core players. *********************************** Later
  21. I think this sends a good sign to the players and the fans. To the players, it shows that good performance will be rewarded. To the fans, it shows them not to mis-read yesterday's financial announcement. Money is still available for the club, and it will be spent.. Later
  22. Check out the last post on page 1 of this thread. Looks like I was the only person to guess the announcement correctly. Nyah Nyah. Later
  23. This was what I predicted would be announced in the "Big News" thread. Good news. Now we're waiting for Fman's comments about the Dickey extension. Later
  24. Well then, let's go for it. Reminds me of those movies in the 40s* where the teenagers had to raise money to "help our GIs'". Go get Mickey, Judy, Jane and that O'Connor kid. Let's put on a show!. Later *= no, I didn't see them until they came on tv many years later.
  25. Ashie62 wrote: Douchebags with hair. Which reminds me. Why would anybody want to invest in the Mets (as a financial investor, not a fan) as long as the two douchebags with hair would still have controlling interests, and be making the decisions? Later
