  2. He may have been the first Brooklyn Cyclone to make it to the majors. Later
  3. I don't have to make the call. He'll be called enough times this year - 62 of them, pitching 71 innings, to the tune of a 3.20 ERA. Evenyually, someone will realize he's doing better than most of the other closer candidates, and he will finish the year successfully closing 9 of his 10 opportunities. Later
  4. When they said Harvey had major league stuff, I hope they didn't mean Mike Pelfrey's. Later
  5. No. Just a tad too young to remember Bobby Bond. But Jamie is an inspiration to all of us old farts in the Geritol Patrol. Go get 'em, kid. Later
  6. The use of Valdespin in center interests me. Casey Stengel turned many good/decent hitting players who weren't good defensive shortstops into centerfielders. Examples include: Mickey Mantle, Bobby Murcer, Tony Kubek (who was ok at short, too) and Tom Tresh. The skills needed at both include speed and good arm. The quick hands needed at short don't seem to be as important in center. If they feel his glove is holding him back, why not give it a try? Later

G-Fafif wrote: It would be appropriate if the Mets hold a farewell ceremony on the Braves' last visit in, September 9, at Shea's home plate marker...and maybe throw some non-lethal object at his coconut. They should name it something catchy, like the: "Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, you smirking mother-fucker" night. Later
  8. His careful nurturing after I adopted him will pay off. Big time. He will have 30+ HR, 100 RBI, hit .290, and not completely embarrass the family in right field. Later
  9. If you recognize an umpire's face, its because you've seen many closeup tv shots of him while he's arguing with your team's players and/or manager. Angel Hernandez should be recognized by every Mets fan. Later
  10. Frayed Knot wrote: Mel Parnell - 89 Pitched for the Red Sox from 1947 - 1956 His 123 wins include a no-hitter and a league-leading 25 win season in 1949 Mel was always the example that was given to show that lefty pitchers could be winners pitching half their games at Fenway Park. Later
  11. I got picked to be a jury member starting next week. I wish I could recuse myself from this thread, because of my personal interest in his case. He's keeping one of my kids in the minors. But this is this week. The new field dimensions will get into David's head as much as the more distant ones did. SO, I predict his home runs will increase. So will his strikeouts. And shorter fences have nothing to do with fielding, so he will still be over rated with the glove. He'll still make the All Star game, on reputation. Counting ststs? .273, 27 HR, 109 RBI, 156 K, 26 E. Later
  12. Bay will like the new home field dimensions. .275 - 23 HR - 78 RBI. Later
  13. I see a Luis Aparicio/ Nellie Fox keystone combo in Tejada/ Murphy. They'll play together for many years, and lead the Mets to at least one World CHampionship. Tejada will flash the glove and have a higher OBP than Luis, but with far fewer steals. Dan'l will hit (and, unfortunately, run) like Nellie, but with much more extra base power. So let it be written. So let it be done. Seriously, I'm buying in on Murphy. .315 avg, with 50+ XBH. Later
  14. But with the settlement, I wonder how much my share is going to be worth. Later (I just pegged someone's BS meter)

  18. You want funk? I'll give you funk. I'm not sure if it belongs in this thread or not. http://www.fangraphs.com/not/index.php/the-ballad-of-rey-ordonez/ Later
  19. It should be Edgin. But my gut tells me it will be Chuck James. Later
  20. Pelfrey has risen from his Hom-Dai, and is now upon the land. Later
  21. He'll have to show us he can break out of his end-of-season problems before I can predict anything more than the same. .500 record (plus or minus one decision), fewer than 32 starts, 4.2 ERA. Later
  22. I'm more concerned about the lack of offense. I realize some players have been injured. But when most of the "A" team has been in there, they haven't done squat. Later
  23. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: He doesn't walk NEARLY enough to sustain a .375 OBP with the power he's got. 1) What's power got to do with OBP? - its on-base percentage. OPS combines on-base + slugging. 2) I said I think he can develop into a Fonzie-lite player in the future. Not this year. I think its a compliment to both of them - one for his potential, the other as a measure to which someone else is compared. Later
  24. That's my point. When it comes to entry to the HOF, players should be competing on a level playing field. Some should not have an advantage based on the league in which they play. Later
  25. In the not too distant future, Fonzie Part Deux (maybe a little less power) with a shortstop's glove. This year? .285 - 5 HR - 55RBI - 10 SB. and a .375 OBP. Yes, I think he can be something special. Later
