Go into to your garage, pick up a hammer, and hit yourself over the head with it six times. Then you'll know what you missed. Later How about having a step break underneath you while walking into the basement and later forgetting said step is missing and tripping down the steps? does that work? Only if you trip down that same step six times. Later

  4. Terry on Travis (from Yahoo): "There's some things that he's got to get fixed, and one of the things is to go down where bright lights aren't so on you on a daily basis to where you can relax a little bit and find your swing." They want to get him away from bright lights, so the send him to Vegas. I know, different kind of bright lights (spot VS neon) but it struck me as funny. Later
  5. I saw Chuck Hiller play second base in the majors, so I knew that Daniel Murphy could do it, too. Later
  6. My newest kid (Montero had to leave my house when he made the majors this year) is catcher Kevin Plawecki. The ex-Purdue Boilermaker hitting to the tune of a .899 OBP at Binghamton. http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=C&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=608700 He was drafted with a supplemental pick 2 years ago, and is considered a good hitter, so-so defender. Kid, I hope we'll be seeing you with the big club this year. Later

  9. There have been many discussions over the years, here and elsewhere, about the concept of clutch, whether or not it exists, and if so, how to quantify it. But I think watching the Mets this year may be bringing us ever so much closer to defining the concept of choke. Its been the elephant in the room, the Emperor's bare butt. I said it. And I'm glad. This is getting frustrating. Later
  10. IIRC, Pagan used to do dumb stuff when he was on the Mets. Has he gained I.Q. points since he left? Or is the team good enough to overcome, and excuse, his gaffes? Later
  11. Aschie started an interesting thread that could be merged into this one. I thought that was the IGT until I saw this one. Later
  12. If this is the cool start to an IGT, I'm not laying down any lettuce until I know who the starting pitchers will be. Later
  13. Cue up that song parody, Sandy singing "I Never Promised You a Tea Garden". Who's gonna' step up to the plate? Later
  14. Hey, wait! Oregon State? Their mascot is the Beaver, same as the mascot for my college (CCNY). We're practically mishpocha. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/mishpocha Now I like him even more. Later
  15. I guess another reason is that he hadn't pitched for a while (didn't realize that) and they wanted to keep him sharp. Later
  16. Why pitch your closer in a non-save situation, especially when losing? Later
  17. The way I remember the difference between the two 1962 relievers named Bob Miller was that Robert L. Miller was the righty. Later

The problem with that 'strategy' is that it essentially tosses out all HS players - and that's where a lot of the true prodigies are. Yes, but at my age, I'd prefer not to have to wait too long. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/draft-picks-increasingly-on-fast-track-to-mlb?ymd=20140604&content_id=78157250&vkey=news_mlb Later
  19. Edgy MD wrote: Gotta disagree. The best player at 21 or 18 or 16 is rarely the best player at 25. Projecting is part of a scout's job. Citing two cases of supposed failure (and I'd say one of them was perfectly accurate, as Reyes has over 100 career homers) hardly discredits the cause. I know. Didn't say the Reyes one wasn't good. But I'd rather they select a player we won't have to wait too long to see develop. Later

  21. Got in the car and turned on the radio. The MFY pre-game show was on. Suzyn was saying that they held a ceremony before the game and honored several veterans who had participated in D-Day. That was because D-Day was "50 years ago, on June 5, 1944". Honest, she said that. June 5th. Suzyn, how did you not know that D-Day was June 6th, 1944? Later
  22. Frayed Knot wrote: Wall's bat is good enough to make up for the concerns about his arm. He has a quick left-handed swing and makes consistent line-drive contact. He has a surprising amount of power for his size When I saw that I remembered the Baseball Digest Rookie Report in which one scout said that Bud Harrelson had "Good power for a shortstop". They also said, when Jose Reyes was at A ball, that "when he fills out, many of those doubles will turn into home runs". Enough projecting/ wishful thinking. Let's just draft the best player available. Later
  23. Good job. How many of dice-K's points were as a starter? Wasn't he in the bullpen most of May? LAter
  24. Watching the Mets hit with the bases loaded reminds me of something Samuel Beckett wrote: "Fail. Fail again. Fail better." Later
