  1. It seems like everything ought to be on the table given how disatisfying the whole replay experience is,, despite how hardcore one might be on interpretation. There's probably some good reasons that bases are the shape they are that I could be overlooking
  2. Maybe, not increasing the size of the base, but it's height could result in fewer inadvertent disconnections. Just spitballing here. I know everyone is spoiling for a fight instead.
  3. Lefty Specialist wrote: Starting to werry a bit. Was kind of hoping they could stitch things together until at least Scherzer got back. But Bassitt, Carrasco and Walker are not exactly meeting the moment. Billy shoulda made that Luis Castillo Trade. Cough
  4. Looks like we all slept through a 2 out 9th inning three-run Homer from Khalil Lee
  5. I not under any illusion I'm gonna convince you, but the neighborhood play is "cheap." I don't like it, so no need to go there. And I'm not opposed to technology I just don't feel comfortable that it's application necessarily eliminates all grey areas for the better. What I've argued here before is that there are too many cases where the rules of baseball and the rules of physics aren't in perfect alignment and that video's role in the game shouldn't be to inadvertently reveal that under the pretense of doling out justice, but rather to ensure fairness within an imperfect world. So in a matter of taste, I'd prefer that in cases of where video shows a runner made contact with the bag prior to a tag-- and in the judgment of an official that whatever momentary and barely perceptible "bounce" that can be associated with the physics of slowing momentum at the bag and that doesn't reflect an error on the part of the baserunner--prolonged lack of contact, or oversliding the bag entirely etc.--that be considered "cheap." I suppose what I might prefer actually--and surely isn't a "hidebound opposition to technology"--would be to first study the physics of all plays and incorporate them into review too. They already know the speed of the runner and im sure they could also determine his mass, the starting point and angle of the slide, the height and curvature of the base etc etc etc to determine the difference between disapating energy and baserunning error. I suspect but wouldn't know that there is a certain speed at which maintaining constant contact with a base on a slide isn't physically possible
  6. Hey wait we just started another comeback
  7. We used to have a saying when we played whiffleball, "nothing cheap." You hit it fair but not well enough for the fielder(s)-- usually just a pitcher and maybe one outfielder ti realistically make a play, we called it "cheap," same as a foul. That carried over to a general guide that we played by and was sportsmanlike and ultimately fair for everyone. "Nothing cheap." Fair or foul, if you weren't sure, you erred on the side of "nothing cheap." That's how I'd do it if were a replay official. If you need a million cameras in super slo-mo to reveal that the laws of gravity and energy transfer and the shape of the human body basically make it impossible for a human athlete running 90 feet at top speed to slow down abruptly enough without losing contact for a millisecond with a plastic sandbag, that's cheap. I don't give a shit about how bad batmags is about to make this logic look
  8. Carrasco seems to have seen enough of Trout and Ohtani
  9. Big break with an error on an easy dp and its 1st and 3rd, nobody out. Nido whiffs but here comes Zimmo. 3-0 bad guys in the 5th
  10. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=95666 time=1655000698 user_id=68] What's good about watching this game, I was just thinking, is getting to see Mike Trout live and in real time. Outside of Mets games, if I saw more than 10 Trout at bats in real time in my whole life, it'd be a fucking miracle. And the announcers are noting the same thing as I write this.
  11. In Lorenzen, the Angels probably have the 2nd best hitting pitcher in baseball too-- not that it will matter. But he used to hit a lot of bombs as a Cincinnati relief pitcher
  12. Luis Castillo Watch: 6 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 3 K, 1 BB. QS, but an L vs. StL This season: 7 starts, 4 QS, 3.23 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 1.1 WAR
  13. Oh just got back from dinner, didn't know this was Apple game. I also had no idea that Juan lagares was still in baseball
  14. The 5 and 10 is true, I'm pretty sure I have the clips to prove it somewhere
  15. Benjamin Grimm wrote: That really is weird. It looks like Bob Chicago put his jersey on backwards. Lol, those are awful. Cubs imo have always been on the "ugly" side of tradional. Like everything they did was a mess ashetically, especially their weird-ass circular composite team photo style that would wind up on their "team" card, like they were a sorority or like existed before anyone thought it was more efficient to take 1 shot of everyone vs. 25 individual shots
  16. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=95551 time=1654898717 user_id=68] That's a lot to speculate about on behalf of others. Would you make that trade if those same circumstances existed today ... and you had the benefit of hindsight ... that is, knowing the futures of Staub, Singleton, et. al.? Me, with hindsight, I think the Mets would have been better off standing pat and not trading.
  17. Rusty was a hell of a Met and it's hard to imagine the franchise without him .. but do you think the Mets given all the same players, competitive situation, and contractual circumstances etc they had then, but with today's analysis, would make the Staub-Singleton Trade again? Reminder that was spring training of 1972, and the deal was Singleton-Foli and Jorgensen for Staub. Coming off a 3rd-place season where they were slightly below-average in offense, but first in pitching.
  18. I was very cynical about the Rockies and the Marlins first unis. Black and purple was a very stupid combo and still is. White and Purple could have been awesome for Colorado. The early Marlins were worse, using trendy black and even more flavor of the month-ly teal. Could have aped the Dolphins classic look but came off more like a Benetton ad. I liked the fish but the colors were bad and as we know that franchise has struggled with their identity ever since
  19. Yeah Alonso surprised me a lot. I remember seeing him at Spring Training before he made his debut--I think a season before that when he was still "Peter Alonso" I do believe I described him here as a lumpy guy with little dinosaur arms
  20. Davis is only disappointing if you didn't know he was hurt.
  21. right we should limit these to "regular" jerseys +1 on the Disney Angel. I thought the SOX uni was like the equivalent of "brutalist" architecture. That symbol of the guy with the bat tho was very on-trend 1970s classroom, I remember thinking. The black unis with the shorts were similarly arresting but in a lot of ways way more classic and ahead of their time on the nostalgia front, and the two of them side by side gave me the impression of the White Sox as a team that just wildly careened from one thing to the next, just too unpredictable. Astros jerseys make people laugh but as been written about a million times, there's something about the design that's also beautiful and lasting and has been copied and reinterpreted and come back into style. It's the best kind of art.
