1. =roger_that post_id=94972 time=1654533422 user_id=128] It's a perversion, an abomination, an offense to all that's good and holy. Pete Alonso is all that stands between me and giving up on baseball altogether at this point.
2. I've brought this up before and it's even more radical but if game length is what they really wanted to solve, they should cut games to 7 innings--but throw a bone to old men by saying that games are still 9 innings by keeping the "bonus runner" nonsense where it is in the 10th--so 2 innings of real baseball then the skills competition. I think the bonus runner biz would also be more palatable were they to give clubs a chance to win in extras. So, go to it in like the 15th or something. But they already opened with a bigger bet.
3. Edgy MD wrote: Did Brett and White make the cut? I'm still getting used to the idea that active players are allowed to do beer ads. I was not able to get definitive in my question so I said these guys were "among" storied one-team-only teammates like Brett & White; Jeter + Rivera and Trammel-Whitaker. Story is here, don;t think it's paywalled but probably registration-walled. I get extra kudos when my links turn into registrations so if you wanna, have at it-- https://adage.com/article/marketing-news-strategy/budweiser-campaign-salutes-mlbs-yadier-molina-adam-wainwright/2419336https://adage.com/article/marketing-news-strategy/budweiser-campaign-salutes-mlbs-yadier-molina-adam-wainwright/2419336 I don't know if there was ever a full on ban preventing active players from doing beer ads but players were banned from wearing their uniforms while doing those ads. That's probably still true. Explains why they're only shown having beer in street clothes--plus from an ad perspective, turns them from supermen to regular beer-drinking guys like you and me. Campaign btw is associated with a free baseball trip giveaway sweepstakes for "National Best Friends Day" this week.
4. It's going to become the norm, and I'm certain MLB would admit that marketing the game to younger fans with short attention spans is one of the reasons behind it--and you can bet there's probably a lot of young fans who DO like it. That it shortens games is only a byproduct and a way to sell it to some who feel that's a problem. Also-- and mainly playing devil's advocate here -- baseball fans are old white men like most of us and old white men in this country are especially resistant to accepting change to their worldview and the way things "should" be--look no further than debate on the DH 50 years on, or you know, any Republican voter. Plus we're all going die soon and it's going to be our kids and their kids--the ones who grew up with this as the norm, who might over time feel strongly about it's value when they are old men. As a means of shortening games it's completely inadequate and subtracts from what many of us feel is often the most exciting portion of a game, so much, more work needs to be done on that.
5. So I can now reveal why I asked this question... was assigned a quick thing on this campaign for work and was embargoed till this morning. Here's the money shot. I know these guys have a lotta blue and orange blood on their hands but this made me feel good as a baseball fan
6. [CROSSOUT]I believe the CI was a "crew chief challenge" whatever that is. [/CROSSOUT]CB Bucknor doesn't strike me as a great crew chief after this series. Edit-- no that was the foul HR. Nevermind
7. Lefty Specialist wrote: Lefty Specialist wrote: Not a lot of confidence in Medina here. Well, what the hell do I know. Yes, a split here is a win in my book. Gigantic, audacious win. Fuck it, this was the biggest regular season series in years and years for this team, and they were embarrassed twice, screwed up a few things, and still took 2 on the enemies turf. And boy did Buck pants Robert's in this series. This is the most interesting Mets team since 86
8. =TransMonk post_id=94880 time=1654473879 user_id=71] Two away…this has been a great game.
9. Maybe we should trade Ronny Mauricio for Trevor Williams
10. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=94805 time=1654461955 user_id=68] I read what you write. But maybe the Reds aren't mainly looking for salary dumps. They're still relatively cash strapped. They want prospects. Cheap baseball labor.
11. Chad ochoseis wrote: Mets have to take advantage here. Dude on the mound looks lost. I think it's the uni number. What kind of a pitcher wears #7? Marcus Stroman, with the Blue Jay-Z
12. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Luis Castillo goes against the Nats today. For fun, let's test my "We'd do better on this road trip if Williams was a long believer and Castillo was our starter" theory The experts are saying that there are way better suitors for Castillo than the Mets because Castillo will likely be the most desirable player available at the trading deadline and the Mets dont have the prospects other teams do that it will take to get Castillo. Yabbut the Mets are also probably one of the few clubs capable of doing the Reds the further favor of taking a shit salary, so their price in talent could decrease (does anyone read what i write?). Some Guy on the Internet says Mauricio + Allen for Castillo + Shit Prospect is a fair deal, but also doesn't contemplate the Salary Eating Discount
13. Edgy MD wrote: Belanger and Palmer. BAM! Nope--Belanger played his final season with the Dodgers! This part isn't really trivia, because I also don't know the answer. I was just hoping oneayou knew a way to query bbr for this kinda shit
14. Frayed Knot wrote: Lefty Specialist wrote: I enjoyed Graterol's disbelief that the ball went out even though Pete just flicked at it. The old 'Let the hard-throwing pitcher supply the power' theory. So what was this umpire screw-up thing I missed all about? Roberts tried to save his bullpen by bringing in a position player (McKinstry) to pitch but rules forbid that now if the team is down by fewer than 6. So, Roberts didn;t know the rule; CB Bucknor did--but didn't know how to enforce it. So they stood around for 11+ minutes. The Dodgers were insistent their pitcher have adequate time to warm up once they determined it was disallowed--but the whole thing goes against this new sensitivity to pitcher injury. I don't know how you penalize a between innings defensive rulebreaking. There's a remedy for batting out of order (batter out); should they give the Mets an additional out?
15. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Ed Kranepool (17) and Ron Hodges (12). Seven of those years overlapped. You win. My other question remains!
16. Help me out here. These guys are currently the 1 (Yadi) and 2 (Wainwright) longest-serving players in MLB, AND have been teammates for 17 years (Molina debuted in 04, Wainwright in 05) AND have never played a game for any other franchise. I'm trying to find a list of other duos in baseball history that fit the latter 2 distinctions (played entire careers with 1 franchise AND had concurrent tenures with another 1-franchise player for 17 seasons or more). For whatever reason google's not giving me that. Just eyeballing a Wikipedia site of players with careers of 10-years or more with only 1 franchise (there's only 185 of them) the longest teammate stretch I can find is 19 years: Trammel-Whitaker (77-95) 19 years: Jeter+Rivera 17 years: Clemente & Mazeroski (56-72) 17 years: Gantner+Yount (76-92) 17 years: Jeter+Posada; Rivera+Posada --am I overlooking others? I can tell you why I need to know this soon. BONUS TRIVIA: Name the Mets duo who were only Mets, had careers or 10 years or more, and were teammates for the most seasons. Names and number of years must be correct
