You say that snarkily, but I respond, okay, then how did Paul Molitor get in on his first ballot? Did the writers get dumber in general knowledge in the nearly 10 years since Molitor first appeared on the ballot?
  2. Just making sure my statement is correct: Rose, we know Cobb, first class Aaron, first ballot Musial, first ballot Speaker, second writers' class Anson, 1939's Old Timers Committee Wagner, first class Yastrezmski, first ballot Molitor, first ballot Collins, third writers' class Jeter, still active Mays, first ballot Murray, first ballot Lajoie, second writers' ballot Ripken, first ballot Brett, first ballot Waner, got in by the writers in 1952 on the 5th try on the normal ballot Yount, first ballot Gwynn, first ballot Winfield, first ballot Biggio, first year on the ballot Henderson, first ballot Carew, first ballot Brock, first ballot Palmerio, third year on the ballot Boggs, first ballot Kaline, first ballot Clemente, special election after death Okay, so really since "first ballots" started to mean something with 1962's Bob Feller and Jackie Robinson the statement holds, with the exception of Rose and Palmerio. But for the most part it is considered a mortal lock club,
  3. Edgy MD wrote: Also projecting an empty class. Valadius' nightmare is coming to pass. What do they have against Craig Biggio I wonder? With the exception of Palmerio, the turn of the century through late 1920s guys (Lajoie, Speaker) due to the early days of the the writers trying to figure out what they were doing, and Rose obviously, all of the 3,000 hit guys have been first ballot enshrinees. Unless EVERYONE including those who don't "fit the anecdotal narrative" that played from 1995-2004 is being painted with same broad strokes?
  4. Kid had to be around 14 in 2004. Must not have been much of a baseball follower then.
  5. MFY Fans all over rejoice that for once a former MFY is not indicated as such in one of these stories! Yes I know Jones is identifiable as a Brave more so than the other franchises he has played for, but generally more times than not articles will point out the MFYness of the perp. For example, when Jeff Reardon was having his episodes articles actually said "Former Yankee pitcher Jeff Reardon."

Really started as gang wear. I mean before this year did you think people wearing Pirates gear outside of the Pittsburgh area were anything but possibly members of a gang that wears yellow and black? Actually I think the "must be a gang member" thing is overhyped and probably not true for most young men who are just following fashion. Fair enough for the last couple of decades.

I mean before this year did you think people wearing Pirates gear outside of the Pittsburgh area were anything but possibly members of a gang that wears yellow and black? My brother's been doing this for years. He owns like 8 different team hats. I was referring to how the fashion statement started. How do you think the Mets came to add black as a primary uni/cap color?
  13. To say nothing about how annoying the "oh I just like the hat" answer is when you think you've seen a fellow Met fan, or try to have some banter or give sympathy or props to seemingly a fan of an out of town team.

They were selected by the "pre-integration" part of the veteran's committee. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ruppert-oday-white-elected-baseball-175350379--mlb.html Never knew there was such a thing. What year was that group formed? Later The Veterans Commitee has been tasked with different groupings of canididates to vote for each winter now. This one, the Modern Era was last year, and there is one for modern non-playing personel as well. I guess its a nicer way of saying "19th Century" or something.
  16. Frayed Knot wrote: Now that this contract is in the bag, I think anything short of a disasterous ending/ugly divorce means that Wright will be the last man to wear #5 for the Mets. Ending it in an HoF career (way too premature for that talk) would be a nice topping but not totally necessary IMO. And hopefully such an occurrence will end the talk about settling for retired numbers of those with <50% or <25% careers as Mets (#17, #8) just to get the total up, although I suspect it won't. Well, if we are using the bar that the Mets have set with #41 and possibly #31 (assuming he does get in, and with a Met cap on his plaque this summer) and putting everyone else whom has ever been debated (#36, #1, #7 (Kranepool), #45 (both McGraw and Franco), #8, #17, #16, #18, etc) into their Hall of Fame. It would be a safe bet that barring Larry-esque career numbers that #5 might just get the #8 or #24 treatment.

  18. Steve Somers?
  19. Would not be shocked if Wells got enough support based on his "clutch" performances and perceived "fun guy to have a beer with" schtick from voters who didn't have any interaction with him or care about all the "hearsay" stories to stick around at least another year though.
  20. It's that time again! http://mets360.com/?p=13597 I'm very nervous about Piazza. Especially in light of Jeff Bagwell's performance last year, whom is the same category in terms of PED rumors as Piazza is.
  21. Ticket plans? Pftt...working on a plan of my own... A plan so cunning that that it graduated from Cunning College at the top of its class!

  23. DocTee wrote: Only 2 of their 9 Opening Day Starters from 2012 remain under contract...and not many more from their 25 man roster, probably. They still have Carlos Zambrano? I gotta say this has to be worse than the 1997 championship dismantling. At least that was after getting a championship. This is exactly what Willets said, knee jerk reaction that sounds like it comes from reactionary radio callers or idle internet chatter after bad games. After another year like this I can see, but this soon, after the whole re-branding of their image, new stadium, etc. The Marlins seem to be in the running for worse run franchise in sports!
  24. Jason over at Faith And Fear In Flushing has this as his entry in The Holy Books

Saw some Marlin "pom-pom waver" on a neutral board excuse the Hanley Ramirez trade by saying it was necessary to do so anyway, and not a sign of an impending fire sale. Can't wait to see the defense of this one. I know this is par the course for this franchise, but at least in the past they've waited until the championship was won before the fire sale happened.
