Benjamin Grimm wrote: I well remember the 1972 "traded" cards (I did one of Johan Santana when the Mets got him from the Twins) but I don't have any recollection at all of the 1973 version. Interesting to see that! The 1972 one was part of the base set. 1973 was the very first separate set that was put out for transactions.

Edgy MD wrote: Isn't it amazing that they could take such an unoriginal idea and slather themselves in it as if it was sprung right from George Steinbrenner's crazy head? Rivera has said he neither knows the cares about the content of the song and certainly didn't choose it for himself. Of course it was taken from another team and another player. What could the Yankees possibly risk doing first? Metallica, meanwhile gets a cut into their income if that song ends up artificially disappearing from playlists. I used one wrestler's theme video, but this pretty much sums up the whole Yankee Universe: g04as9V7Z0w Retail playlists that are on special "for place only channels" count towards the royalty checks? Well I guess... So, does that mean an Enter Sandman cover can't be played either? From the song's Wiki page: "Enter Sandman" has been covered by many artists, including acts as diverse as Injustice (2010), Alter Bridge, Sum 41, Lemmy of Motrhead with Zebrahead, Apocalyptica, "Weird Al" Yankovic (for his "Polka Your Eyes Out" medley), Richard Cheese, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, Tropikal Forever, Ween, Die Krupps, Bjrn Again, Youn Sun Nah and Pat Boone.[50] Lemmy & Zebrahead's cover of the song was nominated for Best Metal Performance at the 42nd Grammy Awards in 2000 but lost to Black Sabbath's "Iron Man".[51] The song was also covered on the album Metallic Assault: A Tribute to Metallica, and is notable for featuring Robert Trujillo playing bass on the track several years before he became a member of Metallica. Country singer Luke Bryan routinely performs the song as part of a medley along with his own song "All My Friends Say". Widespread Panic performed the song once as part of a live set on October 31, 2007 at the Asheville Civic Center in Asheville, NC.[52] Parody band Beatallica recorded a mashup of the song and the Beatles' "Taxman" titled "Sandman", on their 2007 album Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band. In October, 2011, a video of British children aged 810 covering the song at the Buckleberry Beer Festival as The Mini Band went viral, eventually gaining more than 6,000,000 views on YouTube.[53] Punk rock band L7 covered fragments of the song at their concerts.

Frayed Knot wrote: Speaking of Yanqui Stadium II, I noticed that BB-Ref is referring to the current crib as YSIII even though most of the world treats it as if it's only the 2nd in the line of Bronx baseball parks. I thought only we here referred to it as III but maybe BB-R stole it just like Gary steals half our lines and stats for the telecast. I don't know when, or if off hand, they stopped the practice, but the Yanqui Media Guide did separate home stadia records as 1923-1973 and 1976-present. Indeed treating the Renovated Stadium as a separate ballpark, as opposed to the same "unbroken" history (except of course for 1974-1975 over at Flushing Meadows) that the plot of land had during its final campaign.

General All Purpose Baseball Card Thread

I'd guess if Topps did a set it would be like the season highlights design in the 1987 base. First test looks like this. I am just making the borders now. I won't be making this set of cards for a while yet. Sniff...I WANT I WANT I WANT! = FWIW, Fleer did a 1986 World Series "limited edition" set and there are some cards spotlighting the postseason in Topps' Woolworth Exclusive 1986 Highlights set. Both can be picked up for about a buck or so on eBay or something. -
Since its not my show, think it belongs here rather than Member Promotions. http://www.buzzsprout.com/12590 Saturday Morning Spectacular. I'm on the movies episode and the episode discussing the glory years of the Pacific Coast League (prior to the Dodgers and Giants moving west). Going to pop on first week of October, maybe to commiserate about 27 long years as the main host is a Met fan. And in the middle of the month to help discuss the 1996 World Series.

Kong76 wrote: Can someone tell me who the heck Megdal is and what the obsession with him is? Journalist/blogger that has been one of the "front men" in terms of scathing pieces (including an e-book) about the Wilpons dealings with Madoff and how it has affected the Mets. The obsession is, as far as I can tell, that he very rarely, if ever, has produced a positive piece about the direction of the Mets since the scandal of the Mets' involvement with Madoff broke.

Matt Harvey Interview: He "Phoned" It In

Maybe that is part of the problem here, he likely now has "handlers", you know what Matt, be like fucking Jeter, do stupid car commercials, don't talk to the media in this way, only after games....be vanilla. Careful Irish, that's how I got tagged with Jeets... Wright is a better example actually, got into some hot water for okaying a quickie on-the-spot TV spot for a charlatan several years back and has been much more judicial with his public image since...that ESPN "fashion" spread with Reyes not withstanding! -
Think it may be time to update the subtitle on the masthead to include discussion of a well used spot for photo taking on either the Huggins-Stengel Field or Namoli Fild on the Al Lang Stadium complex ini St. Petersburg, Florida!

Things the Mets have done wrong in the Wilpon/Wilpon era

Edgy MD wrote: Ding and ding. The idea that in Doubleday must be made a victim or a paragon just doesn't float. The sooner that notion dies the better. Just tell Fatso to stop repeating the often told legend that he and Doggie had a hand in the Mets landing Piazza based on Doubleday hearing them disscuss the idea of the Mets going after him. Which come to think of it, should make Doubleday seem less of a baseball guy, and more in line of the Steinbrenners and other owners who react to what media members "tell" them to do. The fact that the move worked out splendidly, as oppose to the "Wilpon directed" decision to ride out Hundley's time on the DL, is besides that point. -

Oh I agree, she doesn't like it when I give him some good natured ribbing about certain teams. That kind of was my point about smirking and jokingly saying I disprove of the Jeter book. He knows I'm a massive Met fan, so it would stand to reason that I would tease him about Yankee stuff or stuff from teams the Mets play against often. -

FWIW, I would be pushing harder and needling him about the MFY's, but his mother, my sister, just wants baseball in general pushed on him, and not "crazy" team specific stuff and banter about why one team is better than another. One day the kid shows me a Derek Jeter kids book that he picked up at a book sale, I smirked and said "You know I don't like that!" His mother reacted as if I grabbed the book out of his hands, ripped it to shreads and yelled "I DON'T EVER WANT TO SEE YOU READING THIS FUCKING SHIT, YOU LITTLE SNOT NOSED ****! ONLY METS STUFF, I NEVER WANT TO SEE ANY COCK SMOKING YANKEE SHIT IN YOUR ROOM, EVER! FOR ANY GOD DAMNED REASON!" Geez, I know the kid wanted to show me that he was interested in reading about baseball, it wasn't like I made him cry! But pretty much she doesn't want him to get caught up in the whole "root for one team" thing. -

Geez, don't know how to categorize this as something genuine, or a troll on another board pulling the Megdal act, but saw someone blast a recent coaster giveaway as being a limited supplied, cheaply made and has a sponsor slapped on it, as compared to a tray given away in 1970 that still looks great, was un-sponsored and they apparently (according to him) had one for EVERY SEAT in Shea, instead of today's "First X amount of adults/kids/all patrons." Basically adding that the Mets are conditioning the fanbase to expect less and pay more, and finished his post by saying he wouldn't be surprised if instead getting an expensive free agent pitcher, the Wilpons will use a much less expensive returning in 2015 Harvey as the excuse for not going after anyone (of course not laying out WHO in particular he thinks the Mets should target). -
Edgy MD wrote: I like those little outlines of the channels in the rounded-corner rectangles to look like tiny TV screens. I'm trying to remember the distinction between the black number on the white background vs. the white on black. Was one network and the other local? One VHF and the other UHF? Personally I'm kinda shocked they really did that in newspaper TV listings! I saw a bit on Cheers where it had to be done for the sake of the plot of the episode (during the 1994 strike the local station ran classic games, and one of the character notices that Sam Malone did come into the game as a relief pitcher) but never thought they really did run full rosters and such.

They'll just re-run Francesa to fill the time. Though I've grown weary of them all, Boomer/Carton, Benigno/Roberts are all Mets fans. Agreed. They belong to that category that feeds into the "lovable losers/little brother syndrome" stereotype that gets old fast when having a serious baseball discussion. Even if the points are valid, it makes no sense when it comes with a "the Yankees do it better/this is how its always been with this franchise" mentality. Oddly, the former seems to be prevalent only when it comes to baseball fandom. I've never once heard Jet fans bemoan about why their franchise can't be like the Giants, or the Nets/Islanders/Devils fans complain about what their franchises do as compared to the more popular in the market Knicks/Rangers.

Ashie62 wrote: While Mr. Wilpon did ultimately receive access to tax-free financing for the stadium, he was lauded for never threatening to move the team out of the city during negotiations.... Of course the flip side is, where else were the Mets going to go? Even in the region there wasn't any choices laid out, to the public anyway as one would assume superficial discussions were had on the private level. Also, FWIW, all the charity and community work and such could be answered with "are we giving them credit for doing things they SHOULD be doing?" That being said, for all the shit they've gotten for not given two shits about team history, they've done well with the creation of an Alumni organization (sponsored by Citi of course, also IIRC it may have been created during the Doubleday/Wilpon years, but it is still going strong today) that does a good share of the community outreach stuff that is done by the organization. -
