  1. Inspired by the Topps Archives posting of who among the 1986ers can be found on cardboard as Mets, I give you the following quiz when it comes to Met related postseason teams: First up, Toppless Mets for the 1973 NL Champions *Note, because the stats on the back, and, for the most part, the pictures reflect the prior year, I use the next year's sets for the bulk team set building: Of the 27 Mets listed on their Postseason Roster (using the NLCS programs from both Riverfront and Shea as sources), only 5, well TECHNICALLY 4, do not have a solo card as a Met in the 1974 Topps set, name them. Standard 1 guess per player rules.

  3. More stuff about the 1986 Topps Mets. The fringiest '86 Mets pitcher to appear in the '86 Topps set was Ed Lynch, who pitched 1.2 innings for the '86 Mets, before succumbing to an injury and then, a trade to the Cubs. The fringiest '86 Mets non-pitcher to appear in the '86 Topps set was Danny Heep (227 PA's - not exactly fringy). The other Topps MIA's among the '86 Mets --in addition to already noted Tim Corcoran, Barry Lyons, Ed Hearn, Stan Jefferson, Rick Anderson, John Gibbons & John Mitchell -- are Kevin Elster, Dave Magadan and Randy Myers, who all made their MLB debuts in '86, and surprisingly, late-season acquisition Lee Mazzilli, who, you'da figured, still had enough name in the game to merit inclusion in the Traded set 1986 Mets in Traded set: [fimg=433]http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTYwMFgxMTUz/z/1VQAAOxywh1TFh0-/$_57.JPG[/fimg] I'm surprised Elster didn't rate getting an inclusion in the 1987 Traded Set at least and debuts in the 1988 base set, though he is in the 1987 Fleer set.

An email response to all the backfire would be LOADS of fun!!! I feel for that guy. That's a tuff gig these days. Almost a no-win situation. It would have had to be perfect to cover all current Mets fans. Can anyone here come up with what would have been the perfect message? I wouldn't have, and let the "organic" nature of The7Line and such do that for me. I'd emphasize all that the franchise does in community outreach programs as our way of building a fanbase and brand loyalty as the team is grossly underachieving and causing much apathy among those who go to games or like an official social media page/account.
  5. Vaccaro calls it an affront to Real Met Fans and calls out the revisionist labeling the 108 regular season game winning 1986ers as gritty underdogs. http://nypost.com/2014/04/30/clueless-mets-loyalty-letter-is-an-affront-to-real-fans/

Oddly enough, to counter MGIM's point, I've seen Met fan angst over not having one of our own have a "retirement tour" and specifically why Piazza didn't have one. Obviously I don't recall Piazza saying that 2007 was to be his final season, and it would have been kind of odd seeing him get pre-game gifts from places where he'd only played in interleague games or as an Athletic that very season as that was his last team he played for.
  7. Yankee fans upset Jeter out of lineup for Sunday home game against Red Sox, great quote from Girardi: Joe Girardi wrote: I understand the fans want to see [Jeter] play and I get that, [but] Im sure they would be a little more upset if he was out two weeks or a month, Girardi said before adding, I wasnt hired to put on a farewell tour. This is going to be a distraction for the team all year. A less-egotistical player would have announced at the end of the season, or even in the last month. When did Willie Mays announce? I know that the Willie Mays night was toward the end of the season. How many full season retirement "tours" have there been, besides Rivera and Jeter? Off the top of my head; Ripken, Gwynn, Brett, Ryan, Yount, famously the Clemens one that he came back from. Heh, actually the best way to go was Mike Schmidt. Right after a crud fest of a first month just say "that's it, I'm done!" And he was able to be elected as a starter to the All Star Team!

(Jeter didn't get into any). no AB and didn't play in the '96 playoffs at all. Rivera sucked and was converted to a reliever fulltime in '96. But Bernie was there prior to that so he must have been part of the reason they sucked then right? Actually he was turned during the 1995 season. There is a great "what if" I think in Buster Onley's book about what if Rivera had been brought in during Game 5 against the Mariners in the 1995 ALDS as he was on the roster as a reliever, not their regular 8th inning guy yet though. And to further that bit with Posada, he doesn't become the full-time catcher until 1999/2000. I want to say Girardi is still the regular guy through 1999.

If I have time this summer for the massive project that I've been mulling over for years...yes! There are places like http://tradingcarddb.com/ that have everything in sorted form.

What flicks, or type of flicks, are you not finding that prompts the "outrageously inadequate" comment? i'm talking about the stream only. I mean, almost any movie you'd want to see is unavailable, while lots of pure shit on a stick is at your fingertipts. the whole dvd by mail thing sorta kills the excitement of being able to walk into the place and find what I want, and I think it might cost more too. Try the local library? I'm sure there are tons of obscure and under appreciated stuff in the NYPL system.

  21. Best part: This is a plea to the Baseball Writers Association of America to bend the rules. Its been done before, so do it again. Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera deserve to be inducted together into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019. Its the right thing to do. Jeter and Rivera came up through the New York Yankees organization together, won five World Series titles together with class on and off the field, and belong together on the stage in Cooperstown delivering their induction speeches on the same July day in 2019. Yes, this will require bending the rules because a player must be out of the game for five years before being on the Hall of Fame ballot. Jeter and Rivera are deservedly both first-ballot Hall of Famers, but are slated to enter the hall one year apart if chosen on their respective first ballot. So why not bend the rules? Its been done before and for Yankee greats. Lou Gehrig the only player on a special ballot was elected in a special vote at the 1939 Winter Meetings because it was uncertain how much longer Gehrig would live with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis now also known as Lou Gehrigs Disease. Yes, we are asking the change the rules not because Jeter has a terminal illness, but so he can go in with a teammate, which would make for a nice ceremony. Ironically due to WWII travel restrictions, Gehrig never did have a formal induction until this past year!

Lindsey made it in that postcard set I posted that was a 1969 celebration set, as far as standard issue cards, I've heard about some CBS Sports card set produced in the early 1980s that has him on a card for the College Football coverage. Other than that, I don't think he has ever been depicted on a card. Had to get an eBay sports card artist to do a commission for Nelson's entry in my collection of Mets Hall of Fame cards.
  23. From a Fleer Stadium Giveaway set in 2002 as the Mets rolled out their 40th Anniversary All-Amazin' Team. Both he and Murph are represented as broadcasters in the set.
