  1. Hijacking the thread for the announcement of the broadcast media member joining Angell this July, Ranger broadcaster Eric Nadel.
  2. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Today's Daily News has a photoshopped picture of Curtis in his Mets uniform, wearing number 14. Looked very strange to see that. Obviously, that's not gonna happen. SMH also at the 50th Anniversary patch, dead giveaway for a Photoshop job!
  3. Ceetar wrote: Ceetar wrote: Why does ESPN's ticker report all deals as "According to ESPN and 'media sources'" It's their way of saying that they were beaten to the story (or, at best, that they reported it no earlier than 956 other sources) but still get to credit themselves with being among the ones cited as the source of this material. Yeah, we were flipping to it at lunch during Millionaire commercials and it seemed like they waited until they had someone ESPN affiliated to talk about that they put it in the "Breaking News" section. Yeah, that's been ESPN's MO for decades now. "Don't credit anyone but ourselves."
  4. Ceetar wrote: Works for me. Wheee, offense. We shall see, if it turns out to be another Bay, or Beltran. In terms of both performance and potential way of leaving the roster if the direction of the franchise hasn't improved by about 20 wins by year 4. =

  6. Edgy MD wrote: It will, though. Gary will say it with a twinge of irony, but he'll say it. And once he repeats it 37th time, the irony will be lost. IN A ROW!? =
  7. Edgy MD wrote: I don't know why that's particularly aimed at me, but you've got to realize, Steve, we've already been discussing the Deadspin thing, in this very thread, starting about 24 hours ago. D'OH I know you don't care very much for Deadspin and their ilk encroaching on traditional journalism. Feel free to remove...SMH, RMPL...

  9. Frayed Knot wrote: Lefty Specialist wrote: Admitting Phil Rizzuto was the shark-jumping point. It went from the 'Hall of Fame' to the 'Hall of the Pretty Good'. Which was via the Vet's committee, not the regular process. And it was even worse than that in that it was a vet's committee intentionally stocked so as to get Phil in. Berra, then broadcast partner Bill White, and longtime friend Pee-Wee Reese were added just that year and, I believe, off the committee shortly afterward. Yogi's post-vote call to Rizzuto was reportedly "we got you in". And at the risk of belaboring the point, the advantage of the current system is that, with 400-500 members, no one voting bloc can skew the results the way the old vets committee did with Rizzuto and Mazeroski. FWIW, that committee had been messing things up going back to the 1970s! There was a thing called "The Glory Of Their Times Affect" that allowed a lot of the players talked up greatly in that oral history book to get enshrined through the back door during those years. Also Frankie Frisch ruled the Committee with an iron fist during these years to get a lot of old Cardinals and Giants from the 1920s and 1930s in there. Some of the "Worst. Picks. Ever." come from this era of the HOF. Rizzuto stands out because of Skankee dominance when it comes to discussing baseball history. Read Bill James' "Whatever Happened To The Hall" that came out around 93-94, it is a good history of all the various processes up to that point.

  11. Has PED "taint" but could be a good bargain. http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/texas-rangers/headlines/20131123-report-new-york-mets-pursuing-former-texas-ranger-nelson-cruz.ece?ssimg=1231244#ssStory1313249 Earlier in the month the New York Post reported that the Mets were heavily pursuing Cruz alongside the Rangers and the Mariners, with New York and Seattle making the biggest push. Cruz rejected a $14.1 million qualifying offer from the Rangers earlier this offseason. SportsDay's Evan Grant wrote earlier this week that the Rangers could continue to pursue Cruz despite trading for Prince Fielder although they would prefer a left hander instead of a right hander.
  12. Take it easy Bucket. I wasn't saying the Mets should be signing everyone in sight. But there is a difference between reports saying the Mets are in play for the various "big ticket" items each year, and early winter reports for dumpster diving transactions. The latter of which should be reglated to "in other news" sections of articles, not the main focus of the "plan" or "direction" of the season. We are talking about players that you should be reminded of how they were obtained, not considered the biggest acquisitions of the off season.
  13. Right, but there is a difference when chances are the Chris Youngs and Jaff Deckers of the world turn out to be the "biggest" off season pickups in following the latest craptacular year in a row, and its not even Thanksgiving yet.
  14. Seaver is in the conversation for the greatest off all-time to play his position. Hard to agrue that logic for determining greatest player in franchise (pun possibly intended) history. Short of that, is player among the best in the game at his position in the era he played? That's the Strawberrys, Piazzas, Wrights, etc.
  15. Benjamin Grimm wrote: SteveJRogers wrote: ...and probably won't be for the rest of the decade I'm not so quick to write off the next six years. You see new primary ownership coming in soon? Perhaps the new commissioner will realize Bud's folly here and step in and do something about the Mets plight the way Bud did with the Dodgers (assuming the next commish isn't Plandy Alderson himself)?
  16. Edgy MD wrote: Sorry, man, but I never promised you a rose garden. There are plenty of big names to discuss. Dacker's name came up in a story. I don't know if the notion is to potentially trade for him or to hope for him to clear waivers and grab him. And then the issue is whether he's worth exposing, say, Juan Centeno. Considering the Mets don't have a chance in hell to be in the big name discussions and probably won't be for the rest of the decade, what else is there to do besides point out how a team that should be a perennial jewel of the league is reduced to a perennial dumpster diving joke every offseason.
  17. Edgy MD wrote: Well, the DFA wire isn't where you run into a lot of household names. The guy's got 13 uninspiring career games to his name, but... well, four were against the Mets last August, where he had the grace to go 1-8 against them, as the Mets took two of four in the midst of that brutal road trip where they finished by playing three games in three days in three cities in three time zones. This thread is disheartening as a fan of this team. I can't wait for this conversation to be in late January again discussing "talent" to fill out the AAA roster, rather than before Thanksgiving/Winter Meetings for filling in major holes on the team. Will this franchise be back as one of the big spenders at some point this decade?
  18. Bobby Ojeda
  19. Tony Clark at first.

  21. Frayed Knot wrote: Most recent World Series without an American-born black player: 1950 ... 2013 Expect that to be part of the ammunition for the "baseball is no longer the sport of choice to participate in or watch in that demographic." I don't think that is something that should be dismissed as TV ratings are though.
  22. Seaver gets a street named for him! http://www.fresnobee.com/2013/09/26/3520416/fresno-city-council-puts-pitcher.html
  23. seawolf17 wrote: The Super Bowl is AN EVENT, so everyone watches it. You can't do that with baseball. Of course a lot of that is forced by the mainstream non-sports, and sports, media hyping it as the American Holiday in ways that shame people into throwing and attending parties, or at the very least paying attention to commercials (even though some are posted on the internet before hand!) The Super Bowl has achieved the level where social media users proudly announce their attentions not to watch it, almost as they are trying to create a hipster movement about it. You don't get any of that with the "event driven" media with series, probably due to the series nature of it, hard to create an event out of a Game 4, unless a sweep was on the verge of happening to cap a historic season, in any sport.
  24. All well and good, but again, it is still declining in important youthful demographics, and basketball apparently is charging right behind in those all important young demos.
  25. Frayed Knot wrote: John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: ESPN radio playing a Rangers game instead of the World Series. Getting staticy signal instead from 970 am in Hackensack. Are you kidding me? That's why the Mets didn't want to take their radiocasts to ESPN, too many conflicts. And with the national broadcasts, baseball often isn't the Four-Letter Network's top priority. To be fair, neither was the national broadcast when it was on WFAN and there was a Ranger/Knick conflict pre-ESPN or Net/Devil conflict post-ESPN.
