  1. #WhyThisKindOfSocialMediaMarketingBlows Not just sports franchises. Twitter: where unfunny people get a mic and a spotlight. This is true, but the point is that because of the trolls who "hijack" the hashtag for their own, and followers, amusement and the hope that they get picked up in some agenda driven news article like the one linked to, is pretty much as good of a reason as any for not engaging in such campaigns. Even if the intention, as in the Met one, prize winning driven or in order to create a database of consumer information (here are Twitter handles who did this hashtag, lets tailor some "suggested companies tweets" into their newsfeed or whatever, its a bad idea that can only cause embarrassment to the cause and ridicule by your haters. Case in point, while the Met one has been floating around Met blogs and forums, that Republican one (off of an internet hack agenda driven "news" (but mostly opinion) driven site that is anti the Tea Party) came from a socialist FB cyber "friend" of mine that clearly loves trolling for both people to argue with him and the "HAHAHAHA THAT IS SO TRUE! THEY ARE SO STUPID" responses from those who agree with him on politics, religion (he's a hardcore "devout" atheist) and social issues (to the point of drudging up years old stories to prove a point about an issue ongoing today). I mean, yeah I get the idea of not paying attention to that sort of internet trolling, that its as much to get rises out of people and causing flame wars especially if you are something much bigger than they are (sports franchise, a national political party, celebrity, etc), but why give them ammunition, especially if all they really are, are just attention whores on social media platforms. That's what they want, they crave the attention, and you are just feeding into it by making silly social media marketing gimmicks like "hashtag a response to this statement."

  3. That Fernando Martinez card looks like it could have been at Shea! But FMart never did play at Shea. Hmmm.
  4. Takes a little shine off of Harvey.

  7. Current Weather Channel outlook for Thursday, a now completely meaningless ballgame with the Orioles pretty much locked into the second seed, a lot of cold and windy rain for most of the day and night! [youtube:31fn2gjb]gFhrMiEvwYA[/youtube:31fn2gjb]

My college roommate made me take it home with me because a girl had given it to him and he didn't want his GF to know that. speaking of which, I accidentally acquired a ugly Yankees toy truck. What's the best way for me to destroy it utterly? Film a mini version of the O'Doyle Rules scene in Billy Madison.

  11. Think of all the looking-in-from-the-outside HoF cases of baseball players whose careers included both the 1981 strike and the 1994 one --- Tim Raines, Alan Trammell, Jack Morris, Fernando Valenzuela. The labor movement might have cost them an impressive dose of historical authority. Incidentally, Morris and Gossage were the only members of the 2000 "first time on the ballot" guys to stay on the ballot for future HOF considerations: Jeff Reardon 4.8% 24 votes Willie Wilson 2.0% 10 votes Rick Sutcliffe 1.8% 9 votes Kent Hrbek 1% 5 votes Charlie Hough 4 votes 2 votes each for Dave Henderson and Steve Sax 1 vote each for Bruce Hurst, Bob Welch, Lonnie Smith and Bill Gullickson and finally Hubie Brooks was on the ballot and garnered not a single darn vote. Gullickson's lone vote from a NYC based writer with whom Gullickson shared a joint with while in college. True story. Just as another FYI, that year saw Carlton Fisk on his second (getting edged out from the super class of 1999 of Ryan, Yount and Brett) and Tony Perez on his 9th get elected. Gossage's placement was good for 6th, and all ahead of him (Jim Rice, Gary Carter and Bruce Sutter) eventually got in. Morris came in at 11th, behind Steve Garvey, Tommy John, Jim Kaat and Dale Murphy, all still on the outside, looking in.
  12. Frayed Knot wrote: Among those who never played again after that day: Rich Gossage - final game was on Aug 8 Gossage has the distinction of being an active MLBer during every labor related work stoppage.
  13. Heh, not exactly a full confirmation there with "I think that's accurate."

Since you brought that up, yeah I can buy certain media douches holding Johnson's surliness in New York (as if he wasn't that way in Seattle or Arizona) and awful postseason performance as a Yankee against him. Akin to an excuse Jim Rice fans trot out when defending him, saying voters failed to elect him because of his surly nature to them.
  15. Mets Guy in Michigan wrote: HahnSolo wrote: There are still "I don't vote in anyone on the first ballot" guys out there. I don't agree with them usually, but if they keep Captain Jeets from getting a unanimous vote, more power to them! I think that's true. There will be someone protesting something or another. If there was someone not voting for Greg Maddux, they'll be someone not voting for Jeter. (And he will be obliterated by an outrage the likes of which we've never seen. There will be calls to change the voting and limit voters. You watch.) And Seaver had no choice but to say nice things. As the reigning highest-percentage guy, it would look horrible if he started dissing other players. Imagine the reaction from the Verducci's of the world if he had said, "I don't think Jeter quite had the numbers or the skills to be the first unanimous player. There are better guys out there." I really did think Maddux had the best chance to beat Seaver. Incredible player, huge markets, not a sniff of trouble, classy. IIRC, the first person that outed himself as a non-voter for Maddux said he wasn't voting for anyone who played during his self-defined steroid era range of years. So that may present a problem aside from the "ixnay on first balloters" voters.
  16. Ceetar wrote: Following recent trends, Jeter shouldn't even make it first ballot. One would have said that about Frank Thomas and Tom Glavine though.

IIRC they are only open weekends for the college football/NFL crowds after the baseball season wraps, they usually have had "DRINK EVERYTHING UP SO WE DON'T THROW IT OUT" parties in January before closing for good until April.

Or maybe its the assistant to the hitting coach! Second is Mike Baxter getting into 4 games this year, while no longer on the 40 man roster, he was outrighted to Albuquerque back on April 9th.
  24. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Yeah the Keith thing browns my biscuits too, because if you're lazy enough you'll forget that Cashen hadn't produced a winner, much less Keith Hernandez (for another month and a half), when lined up side by side with Alderson's turnaround. Although, Strawberry was about to make his debut, nobody'd even heard of Dwight Gooden, but the story of the year was what a POS Foster was turning out to be. One thing the press hasn't looked into enough from my perspective was verifying the accuracy of Hudgens' remark that "all the good teams are doing this" from the DiComo article that sort of revealed this philosophy. Of course that was under the stewardship, 100% of Nelson Doubleday, who wanted a winner, and not the Wilpons...or so the Saint Nelson revisionists would want you to believe!
