  1. Caught this from Bob Raissman's column in today's Daily News ]Scully knows Jack about Reyes Ch. 11's Sal Marchiano, on his Wednesday cast, picked up (it was a great catch) on an amazing comparison voiced by Vin Scully. The Hall of Famer was working Mets-Dodgers on Ch. 9 in Los Angeles. Marchiano gave viewers full sound of Scully marveling at Jose Reyes' ability to manufacture a run. Reyes beat out an infield hit, stole second and third. Then he induced the pitcher to throw a wild pitch. "That run belongs to Reyes," Scully reported. "He reminds me of Jackie Robinson." Wow! For Reyes, this is the highest of praise. And it comes from a voice who not only knows what he is talking about, but resides on top of the baseball broadcasting mountain. I can see that, Reyes certaintly is the same kind of disturber that Jackie was. But Reyes has quite a different demeanor than Jackie Robinson had. Probably more of a Rickey Henderson personaility than the Robinson/Rose/Cobb type.
  2. Another Stro run in, 5-3 bottom of the 6th
  3. 4-3 Astros top of the 6th, Pelfrey's day is done. Jon Adkins in
  4. Talk about polarizing, Rose and McCarthy were saying Armando Benitez was roundly booed when revealed as the answer for a mid-inning triva question (most saves in a single season by a Met) Reminds me of a story I read in Marty Appel's book about one day in the old Yankee Stadium, in midst of a rain delay during the early 1970's they decided to have a little fun with a newfangled rolling marquee scoreboard. They took the list of the All-Time HR leaders and just scrolled the top 20 or so, as the names rolled the crowd gave applause appropriate for that player, but when it came to Roger Maris' entry there were more boos than cheers, as his relationship with the Yankees and NY was still contentious at the time.
  5. Jose Valentin rips a 2 out, run-scoring double to make it a one run ball game. Ensberg bobbles Milledge's grounder, Franco scores and we have a brand new ballgame!
  6. Mike Lamb drives in two with a double in the 3rd. So far hardest ball hit off of Pelfrey all day though. 3-0 Astros through 2 and a half innings
  7. Reyes gets at 2nd based on a balk despite getting tagged in midst of a rundown
  8. Houston Palmeiro, LF Loretta, 2B Lamb, 1B Ensberg, 3B Scott, RF Burke, CF Bruntlett, SS Quintero, H, C Rodriguez, P Mets Reyes, SS Wright, 3B Lo Duca, C Alou, LF Franco, 1B Valentin, Jo, 2B Milledge, RF Johnson, CF Pelfrey, P Good 1st inning for the most likely 5th starter as the final week of Spring Training starts
  9. Read through the rankings folder. FK, YSG and company started with the rankings sometime on the old EZE Board version of this forum where the members had to rank the top 20 Mets of that particular season in order of performance. After all season totals were tabulated, the player totals were combined and VOILA! The Top 500 Mets!
  10. TheOldMole wrote: The ones that surprise me for being in the bottom group. Milledge, obviously. Amos Otis Mike Cubbage, for all his Met organization history, coaching and managing -- you'd think someone would be interested. And most of all, Gil Hodges. I'd like to start a movement to ask everyone to check out the Hodges page several times a day. But that would be cheating, and I won't. This isn't the UMDB Popularity rankings, check the Rankings Forum, its ranking the top 500 Mets of all time based on votings per seasons.
  11. Johnny Dickshot wrote: I get the impression the writers liked the fact that the Mets historically struggled more than the players, definitely, and also the fans. One Met Myth that probably shouldn't endure as well as it has is this idea that they couldn't have gotten off the ground any other way, that they had to be the worst team ever. The fact that there was NL bball again in NYC would have drawn fans anyway, good and/or bad. I think Casey Stengel had more to do with that than anything though. I never heard the myth about that they had to start that way. But the 62 Mets were a complete by-product of the crap that the NL gave them in the expansion draft and an over reliance on ex Dodgers and Giants.
  12. Yancy Street Gang wrote: Of course not. But they'll no longer hold the title of "Worst Team Ever"I enjoyed seeing Roger Maris and Lou Gehrig's records broken. I'd enjoy seeing this one broken too. Maris still holds the records in many people's eyes though But thats another topic...
  13. Nymr83 wrote: its up to $6,666 right now (one wonders if the idiots reading these news stories know that ebay takes fraudulent bidding seriously.)Heh, very true. Couple of years ago as a joke 1050 ESPN Radio just threw up a Michael Kay signed dollar bill (Kay lost it on a bet and the winner refused to take it) and once it started getting crazy bids they decided to make the auction worth the money by making it a charitable donation (IIRC it was going to be something Marty Lyons is a part of) plus the winner would come down to the studio during a show. Well, the winning bidder never paid up! Kay's show also did have some crazy ebay bidders one day when Kay noticed that a ball he signed was on ebay, the final price was probably some 500% more than an actual signed Michael Kay ball should be worth, but mostly because morons heard the show and were jacking up the price. Kay just mentioned it because he was unsure if he ever signed a ball in Toronto (the memoriabillia shop that was selling the ball) No clue if that ball ever got paid for or not, I doubt it, I mean I wouldn't pay for a Gary Cohen signed ball (equivelent personaility) for as much (high hundreds) that it went for! Murphy, Nelson, Allen, Barber, Kiner eh maybe, if it was a combo (Murph, Nelson, Kiner or Allen, Barber) of course! Just gotta shake your heads sometimes.
  14. Well since no one stepped up with a Derek Bell pic of him on the mound in San Diego with shades (I saw it linked through SI in a UniWatch article but I tried digging for it and came up empty) So here is Derek's mugshot BTW, inneresting is the site I got it from chronicles bad things that Mets have done through the years, though it appears that the site is run by Met fans. Also rather strange format with a sidebar of Met Lovin' Big Shots right there blocking text rather than on the side. Gus Bell, next...
  15. My cousin checks in, and his team "has the dandiest nickname, The Flying Dutchmen!" That quote is from the radio ad for DHL's Hometown Heroes thing last summer with the faux Honus Wagner calling up telling the radio host why he should be voted.
  16. Johnny Dickshot wrote: I associate Reggie in No. 9 (A's) and his taking 44 so as to bask in Aaron's reflected glory. Well #9 was taken by Graig Nettles, who was firmly in the Munson camp and had a thing against Reggie anyway, so even if Reggie asked and promised the world he wasn't getting #9
  17. soupcan wrote: Actually its the length of time allowed to vote that sort of soured me on the SPotG.If you make it so you have 24 hours after the game to get your vote in perhaps peeps will feel more of a sense of urgency to get it done. This would also have the added benefit of not clogging up whatever forum the voting threads are in. Just one man's opinion. Maybe (this could go in the BTTA folder actually) we should create a seperate "Game Threads" folder for the IGT, SPotG, Beer PotG and whatever threads would tie into a Game thread?
  18. KC wrote: How do you guys remember this stuff? I figured Val was off being a college dude with no time for goofin' off on a baseball forum during the winter.Thats probably the case with his latest absence, but he did admit in his return post (titled "I'm BAAAAAACK" which probably means he learned nothing from what Bret had to say) that Bret's lashing of him was part of what drove him away from posting last spring/summer. Kind of easy also to put together because that was just about the last post he made before returning.
  19. I'm still not sure who got the worse of it, Val from Bret or Bret from everyone rushing to Val's defense, despite the fact that Bret did have some bit of a point. BTW Yance, sure you don't want me to set up another poll for this one? =
  20. Okay I got the kid interested, hopefully he'll sign up before the draft. He's good for it, probably just too busy with all the Spring Breaking he's doing right now!
  21. From A baseball bookshelf blooger ] The Sporting News and its parent company, American City Business Journals, have decided to suspend publication of the Baseball Guide and the Complete Baseball Record and Fact Book. There will be no 2007 edition of the Guide, and the 2007 edition of the Record and Fact Book will not appear in print. These decisions were made "for business reasons." TSN had been publishing the Record Book, which went through several variations, for almost 100 years (1909) and began its version of the Guide in 1942; prior to that it had been produced by Spalding. The hopes are that the publications will appear on TSN's website (sportingnews.com). Un-freaking...Ah well, the shame is that it's been The Official one for sometime now. I guess the feeling is that there are sites out there such as MLB.com's historical pages and baseball-reference.com that they feel that there is no justification or whatever.
  22. I might be able to recruit a MFY cousin of mine, I'll know hopefully in the next couple of days
  23. Think I might give this a whirl! Fairfield Stags Represent!
