  1. Giants up 3-2 heading into the 9th. Mike Stanton allows some hits to tie and a wild pitch to give the Dodgers the lead. Entering play on Saturday: St. Louis is up 1.5 games on Houston, 2.5 on Cincinatti. Magic number to eliminate Cincy is 1. Magic number to eliminate Houston (and clinch) is 2. Dodgers now have 2 game lead in the Wild Card race over Philadelphia. Magic number to eliminate Philadelphia (and clinch WC) is 2. San Diego has .5 game lead on the Dodgers in the West. San Diego clinches a playoff spot with a win or Philly loss. Magic number to win the division is 3.

  4. I'm not sure the Yankees have clinched home-field advantage yet. The Yankees hold the tiebreaker over the Tigers, but the season series between the Twins and the Yankees was tied 3-3. The Yankees are up 2 games, but with 2 games to play the Twins or Tigers could tie them in record. In the event that the Twins and the Yankees finish with the same record, I'm not sure what the tiebreaker is, as the season series was a tie. In the event that the Twins, Yankees and Tigers all finish with the same record, Minnesota would be the Wild Card, as the tie for division leader is broken first (and the Tigers hold that tiebreaker over the Twins). In that case, the Yankees would have home-field advantage. Potential dates for two playoff games in NY: Tue Oct 3 - NLDS 1 / ALDS 1 Wed Oct 3 - NLDS 1/ ALDS 2 Wed Oct 11 - NLCS 1 / ALCS 2 Wed Oct 18 - NLCS 6 / ALCS 7 For these dates, only for the last one would the National League game be definitively forced to happen in the afternoon. For all the others it remains "up in the air."

  9. Fall of the Cards I think. CW says we root for LA to win the 'card and the Cards to pull it out by beating the Giants on Monday. I don't think we want to face Philly or Houston in the playoffs. Dodgers winning the 'card ensures we avoid weekday afternoon playoff games in the first round.

We kicked it off with a bunch of friends at Coney, then went to Boston, Baltimore & Phillie and ended up at Shea. Very cool. I should start dropping hits to my g.f. now. I don't know who around here is big on the blog-reading, but she's the writer of the two of us and decided (what timing!) that this was the season to document in blog form: http://www.metsgrrl.com

I'm still waiting for Keith to apologize for that geographical error when he tried to name the states ("it borders the most") that border Missouri. He forgot both Iowa and Nebraska, IIRC. Plus Tennessee borders just as many.
  17. I recall the Yankees handled the 6-pitcher (including Billy W.) no-hitter thrown against them a couple of years ago very classily. Had a bottle of champagne waiting in each pitcher's locker when the game ended.
  18. 0 hits through 8 innings for the Yanks.
  19. I guess we can end this poll now. See you next season Pedro.
  20. Off - fense? What is this "off - fense" you speak of? I'm not familar with such a concept.
  21. Yancy Street Gang wrote: So what's the pitching rotation look like for the closing series in Washington? I'm thinking it'll be Maine, Glavine, Trachsel. That would leave Hernandez and Glavine on track to start the first two games of the NLDS. Trachsel would have the appropriate rest for a Game 3 start on Friday of next week. Exactly. Except Game 3 is on Saturday, not Friday.

  23. ="Rotblatt"]keeps score for me when I'm off getting beer Wow. Now that's good. My g.f. has gradually become much more involved in the fan thing over the past 1.5 years -- from basically no interest to being responsible for us having the ticket plan (I wasn't going to get it, she just put the $ down and told me later) to going to road games in Pittsburgh --.but keeping score for you...wow. I can't get her to listen to me when I try to explain what it is that I'm doing making all those little markings during the game
  24. We have the Tues/Fri plan and the Sunday plan and were very happy with what we got as well. We got Mezz 14 / Upper Box 788 for the playoffs. Tue/Fri plans got DS Game 2, LCS Games 2 and 6, WS Game 3. Sunday plans got the same games. We made some trades for DS 1 and LCS 1, although trading World Series tickes could be tougher.
  25. Yancy Street Gang wrote: I know what you mean. I think if Pedro is one of the pitchers it might be nice to have 12 instead of 11. It is also possible that they could leave Pedro off in the first round and add him back in for the second round (knock on wood and all that). I think Gary (?) made the point on SNY last night though that pinch-hitters really aren't going to be used that much anyway, so taking 12 wouldn't be too much of a burden. Endy figures to play most games as the first PH/defensive replacement, but how often are you going to need Woodward, Franco or Milledge except to bat for the pitcher?
