  1. I started this thread meaning to put in my pre-game thoughts but was running late for the game and missed them. Ooops. Anyway, they were that I think this game was set up to be a win because 1. Perez is a big-game pitcher and is more likely to concentrate and focus when the pressure is on. 2. The Yankees suck against lefties. Had a fantastic game. I can actually report that there are Yankee fans who are real baseball fans, are polite, civil and friendly. (Yes, all 4 of them). Bob Davidson is a tool. You make a bad call, you get to hear it from the dugout for an inning, and go over between innings and tell them to cool it. He had no business taking off the mask and walking over to the Mets dugout. Good on Jerry for not taking his shit.

Mets have a doubleheader on Monday, they're not going to give up an off-day before that. Also, you have 55,000 people who paid a lot of money to see Mets-Yankees during the weekend. They can't reschedule that for Monday afternoon when most of those people have to be at work.
  5. They have announced that the game will not be played Saturday, Sunday or Monday. I don't understand why they couldn't just do a 1:00 game on Sunday. Maximizes time between the two games (second Sunday game is 8:00) and lets everybody who had a ticket for this weekend see a game this weekend.

  9. Pete Walker, 2002?
  10. The other Bobby Jones, 2000. Edit: somebody already had my other one.

  12. Alou's ejection (1st of the year for the Mets) wasn't just for arguing, it was for him slamming the bat down on the plate as soon as he was called out. After he went back into the dugout, some equipment (probably his helmet and bat) got thrown onto the field. Terrible crowd. They not only booed the crap out of Aaron, the also booed Willie heavily as he walked back to the dugout after giving the ball to Smith.

  15. Annika Sorenstam. Threw out the first pitch tonight, wearing an "Annika 59" pinstripe jersey.
  16. Uncle Cliffy getting the leadoff single to set up that win of Rivera. Rooting big for the Devil Rays this season (of course) and a little bit more because Cliff is there.
  17. Church 3.25 Maine 2.75 Schneider 1.5 Sanchez 1 Wagner .5 Wright .5 Tatis .25 Anderson .25
  18. Some actual notes about the game played tonight: Loved the Delgado bunt. Of course, he squared and pulled back after the first pitch was a strike...and they still didn't take the shift off. Good for Delgado. Was listening to the post-game press conference on Mets Extra and Willie confirmed that 1. Delgado did it on his own and -- in Willie's words -- 2. "He probably should've been doing that a long time ago." Church is an absolute stud. Inspired choice by the in-game music people, too to use "Modern Love" after a big hit by Church. (I also very much like the choice of the X version of "Wild Thing" for Duaner). I might've used Endy to pinch-run for Schneider in the bottom of the 8th, but he did score form second on Reyes' single, so I guess it didn't hurt us to not put the PR in. Loved Maine's effort tonight (retiring 10 in a row after the homer) but I'd like him to finish off the hitters a little faster. 18 of his 108 pitches tonight were foul-offs when Maine already had 2 strikes on the hitter. Quiet crowd and a bit chilly but fun game. Makes me want to go tomorrow night too.
  19. I don't disagree with a lot of what you said by I somehow feel compelled to point out that Franco's walk-off was also from '99.
  20. The correct answers: 1. Greg Lovelady 2. Randy Milligan 3. Guy Conti 4. Brandeis University 5. Jose Reyes, Eric Valent Unfortunately, I already got my "you didn't win" email.
  21. Adam Rubin also reports that Casanova cleared waivers and will report to New Orleans.

You can also win one of these at a trivia contest over on Adam Rubin's Blog. To do that, you'll need to be one of the first 5 to know the correct answers to the following questions: 1. Who was Joe Smith's college pitching coach, who encouraged him to be a sidearm pitcher? 2. Which former Met, whom David Wright rooted for while growing up watching Norfolk Tides games, eventually signed him? 3. Who was Pedro Martinez's first pitching coach in the United States? 4. What college did Nelson Figueroa attend? 5. Who were the last two Mets to hit for the cycle?
