  2. Dig the 1-0 game. Not much to complain about. Yeah, we didn't hit much but that Ubaldo guy is pretty good. Disappointed with Tejada failing to cover the bag quickly enough when Thole had the runner thrown out at second. Very pleased with Pelfrey's performance. Carter should be giving Davis a day off; looked like he needs it, perhaps even more than Beltran did.
  3. Well, there we go. Maybe now we start a "send Oliver Perez to AAA" thread and see if we can get that done too.

  5. New York has basically everything a person could want and basically any sport you could ever want to see...except good college football.

He's arbitration eligible, which means he can't have his salary reduced more than a small percentage over what it was in 2010. The Mets would have to non-tender Maine, allow him to become a free agent, assume no one else signs him, and then re-sign him to a minor league deal in May (?) of 2011.

  10. Hey, look, Francoeur and Carter doing things well for the first time in weeks.

I never considered that, seeing as how you can't fire an owner.. If you can't fire a Wilpon in this poll, then perhaps the poll-master should remove the Wipon name from the choices. I didn't realize that this was such a serious poll that all because of us, the top vote-getters would be receiving actual pink slips at the close of voting. I will now withdraw all of my votes being that in real life, I don't even have the clout to get the third dishwasher at CF Shake Shack fired. I think you missed the joke.

Unless you know how much they're making, and how much they're spending in relation to what they have, ... how much they could spend, you're just guessing. The issue isn't simply how much money the Wilpons have spent, but how much money they can comfortably afford to spend. You are correct, I have no idea how much they can afford to spend. But I can compare their spending to other MLB teams, including those with more recent success than the Mets, and realize that they are spending comparable amounts or more.

Felipe hasn't played the outfield since 2008 but I'll bet he could again if needed. Adam Kennedy would have been a similar-- and similarly-cheap-- bag of skills to bring here for less than Alex got (and he was conditioned for/expected a backup role in Washington, too). Good call - I had forgotten about him as a Cora-alternative.

In all seriousness, the Wilpons have shelled out plenty of cash for payroll/draft signings; unless you believe the conspiracy theories that Jeff is pulling all the strings, I don't see them as the ones at fault. The Madoff stuff is distracting but the payroll is still very high and I don't see how their investment is insufficient to produce a contending product. I see the GM as the one responsible for taking that cash and using it properly.

  16. How about Chris Jones, with 5 walk-offs in his 362 Mets plate appearances?
  17. 8 Ed Kranepool Kevin McReynolds 7 Cleon Jones Rusty Staub David Wright 6 Carlos Beltran George Foster Jerry Grote Mike Piazza
  18. Ceetar wrote: I've never minded Cora really. He plays too much, isn't very good, etc, but I'm not sure there is actually, or that their was in the offseason, a guy that would actively be better than him as a backup. I don't know how many times this has already been mentioned as the perfect example, but the St. Louis Cardinals signed Felipe Lopez to a $1 million contract, plus $1.2 in performance bonuses. There was no vesting option for 2011. He had finished 2009 with 680 ABs and a batting average of .310 (.810 OPS). He plays second, short and third, plus I heard he can pitch in a pinch. Now, Felipe Lopez has only been 0.5 WAR and has a .736 OPS for the Cardinals this year, but that's still 2 wins better than Cora (and 200 OPS points), for less money.
  19. No, it won't bring us Felipe Lopez instead but that doesn't mean it's not the right thing to do. Cora's 2011 option vests once he plays in 80 games in 2010. He's now played in 62. In those 62 games, he's managed to be a whopping -1.3 wins above replacement. I don't know all of the intricacies of how that statistic is calculated, but if I am reading that right -- and I like to think that I am -- he's cost the team 1.3 wins versus what we would get with a replacement-level player. Alex gets his $2 million whether or not he actually plays for the Mets anymore this season. He has his 10+ years of service time and will get his major league pension. I bet he'd make a good minor league manager/coach down the road. But we cannot tolerate him on our roster any longer, and certainly cannot tolerate him again in 2011. He's gotta go. If not now, then absolutely after game #79. I fully understand that many people would rather release Castillo and/or Perez. That may be the case, but their money is on the books for next year no matter what. Cora's salary doesn't have to be.

  21. Personally, I don't know if I'm qualified to address Wayne's overall performance as I don't listen to WFAN enough (my Mets exposure is 35% in-person/55% SNY/10% WFAN) From my perspective, though, I think Wayne does a poor job addressing in-game action in a timely fashion. I hate that he is slow to tell the listener where the runners have advanced to during a play and the key details of what's happened. A good test of a radio announcer is whether you could keep an accurate scorecard while listening to them. Never had that problem with Gary/Bob, Gary/Ted, Gary/Howie or even Howie/Tom. But I think I would go nuts if I tried to do it with Wayne.

  23. Jerry is under contract through this year, plus the club holds an option for 2011. Omar is under contract through 2012, plus the club holds options for 2013 and 2014. -- I expect (and probably would demand) that both will be fired if the team does not make the playoffs this year.
  24. 1. I know the rules say don't vote zero (I disagree with the rationale) so I voted a symbolic half-point to Pagan today. 2. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Pretty poor voter participation for this game. Seems we're hitting the summer doldrums... I saw this in a voting thread -- I voted but realized after making the post that voting had already closed. I don't run the system and don't get to complain about the free service I utilize --so I will repeat my comment that I think voting closes much too quickly, particularly in the summer when people are traveling and may not be able to vote each game within 3 days.
