  2. I agree in theory but if they're 15 (not t-ball anymore) and on an all-star team by virtue of also playing on a "regular" team, well, I can understand how not everybody on the all-star team is going to get equal playing time. Not that this is a commentary on Soupie Jr. Then again, I don't have kids.
  3. I believe Verlander was the correct answer prior to Pineda making the majors.

  5. This IGT cannot be complete without coverage of the fan who ran on the field and completed an amazing, spiderman-esque escape from security. Quick, watch the video before MLB Advanced Media has it yanked from Youtube.
  6. 200 Billboards donated to put up sketch of suspect. Still no arrests.
  7. Frayed Knot wrote: And of course in the two most recent seasons he's been a hobbled version of himself which barely added up to one complete season. Here's the thing though: even in 2009, when hurt, he turned in an OUTSTANDING season. He played 81 games and had .325/.415/.500 (!!). It was only half a season and he still gave us 4.4 WAR. Beltran will go down for me as one of my all-time favorite Mets whether he plays 50 more games or 500 more games with the team.

  9. Brett Wallace is Houston's first baseman and is hitting pretty well: .328/.396/.454 although without much power. Wallace was a college teammate of Ike Davis at Arizona State (Wallace played 3B at the time) and won the Pac-10 triple crown twice. He was a first round pick of St. Louis in 2008 and was the key prospect sent to Oakland when they acquired Matt Holliday. Oakland flipped him to Toronto as part of the Halladay deal (Toronto got a prospect from Philly that they sent to Oakland). Toronto flipped him to Houston as part of the Roy Oswalt deal (Houston got a prospect from Philly that they sent to Toronto). Needless to say, the top prospect shine has worn off, although he still may wind up as a productive major leaguer.
  10. J.A. Happ's real name is John Anthony, but he spells it "J.A." and pronounces it "Jay." Make up your mind already! We knocked him around in his major league debut in 2007 when he was with Philadelphia. He went to Houston in the Oswalt deal.
  11. I believe the Gwreck party will also be in Pittsburgh that weekend (Saturday and Sunday). I've never participated in active hotel stalking but the last time I wound up staying at the same hotel (not deliberately) as the team, the hotel staff kept any obvious autograph seekers (ie. people holding bats, balls and the like) out of the lobby. We won't be staying there but I hear the Westin Convention Center is the one you want in Pittsburgh.
  12. I get that Samuels' honesty is now known to be dubious at best, but I have no reason to suspect he was making stuff up, particularly given the depth of the conversation about the uniforms. Tidbidts learned during our conversation included that it was his idea to go to the blue caps during the Mets' final game at Yankee Stadium II; that he deliberately put the Mets in blue/hats and pinstripes for "big games" in recent years (NLCS Games 6/7; last game of 2007 and 2008 seasons), etc. Again, not that I would even trust him to work a restaurant coat check, let alone the equipment at an MLB clubhouse, but I think it was an honest answer at the time.
  13. No doubt about it, especially given that so little of the pitching was Schaefer-worthy.
  14. Beltran 6 Harris 2 Reyes 1 Isringhausen .5 Buchholz .5
  15. BOOKS! Also: Beltran hit a third homer.
  16. I had a chance to chat with Charlie before the Omir Santos game at Fenway in 2009 and I of course (politely) registered my unhappiness with the black. Among other things learned, Charlie indicated his belief that the players preferred the black.
  17. I understand the process. My questioning is regarding the need for same.
  18. Whacky lineup: Reyes SS Harris 3B Beltran RF Bay LF Muffy 1B Turner 2B Thole C Pridie CF Niese P Indeed. How many days off does David Wright really need? He got his day off yesterday.
  19. Edgy DC wrote: Predicting a good game for Harris, adapting to his infield perspective and getting a message from smelling Martinez's farts. Wouldn't Harris be in greater danger from Angel Pagan's return? There's zero reason to keep Harris over Pridie when Pagan returns.
  20. Bill Spiers?
  21. Tomorrow at 3:10 PM EDT.
  22. Yes, Samuels was relplaced late last year by Kevin Kierst, the former PSL equipment manager.
