Seems impossible that a team in the biggest market with a cable station and a new ballpark with 25,000 season ticket-holders and is part of the MLB tv and web contracts and licensing deals could possibly be losing money. They don't have 25,000 season ticket holders. The Times has reported that the full-season equivalents are down to 10,000 this year. The new ballpark has huge debt obligations ($50M per year). You've got to sell a lot of Shackburgers to make that up, and it's tough to do that when attendance is down. Your points re: the TV revenue and MLB revenue are well taken, but if MLB is also making $25M emergency loans to the Mets then chances are that it's not enough to put the Mets in the black.
  2. Whether one agrees with the projected attendance for the year is a red herring. The difference is $10 M of a total estimated liability of $625 M. The total amount of Sterling's other holdings is of course not public information.
  3. There are a couple ways of handling these deferred compensation payments. One way is to purchase an annuity or similar investment device at a lump sum, and then 5 or 10 or 20 years down the road, the annuity makes the guaranteed payments (ie. $250k a year in Saberhagen's case). It's a good bet for both parties: it's less in total cost for the Mets, and guarantees future income for the athlete. It has been speculated, however, that the Mets were using Madoff as the investment vehicle to make those future payments. If true, that's a bigger problem, and would mean that they have to come up with the cash each year to those players rather than having already paid for it. -- Also, I think it's probably unfair to stick that on Phillips; wouldn't those contracts have been Al Harazin or Joe McIlvane-era?
  4. It was speculated on the TV broadcast (and I agree) that neither Reyes nor Collins were ejected because it's quite possible that the umpire knew the call was bad. Particularly in Reyes' case: throwing the helmet down and jumping up and down is usually going to result in an ejection. I was surprised Terry didn't get tossed as well. I guess he just didn't want to use the magic word.

  6. McDowell: "I am deeply sorry that I responded to the heckling fans in San Francisco on Saturday," McDowell said in a statement. "I apologize to everyone for my actions."
  7. Interesting. I wonder if I'm splitting hairs to think that there is a difference.
  8. PUT IT IN THE BOOKS!
  9. Marvin Hudson owes Daniel Murphy big.
  10. Seems to me that the last time Clippard gave up a homer it was to the Mets too, on a Thole walk off on the last weekend of last season.

  12. KABOOOOOOOOOM We should have the lead. Also fuck you Tyler Clippard.
  13. UNBELIEVEABLE. What the fuck is wrong with you Marvin Hudson?
  14. metsmarathon wrote: man. used to be you could call someone a fag and not be accused of a hate crime. i'm not complaining necessarily, but we're running out of insults. Yeah, but you'd still be a douchebag if you called someone that. Hey, look. That insult still works. I also like moron; that would fit someone using that term (now, or then) well too.

  16. They still had the punch-out ballots as of last year. I think a majority of voting is done online now but I still like the old-fashioned paper ballots.
  17. All I needed to know about Hample is that he was the guy who spent the final game at Shea trying to catch home run balls (he got Beltran's) but then proceeded back into the stadium, changed into a Marlins jersey, and tried to get Marlins players to throw him balls/equipment after the game ended.
  18. Thole 3 Buchholz 2 Davis 1 Bay 1 Pridie 1 Igarashi 1 Rodriguez 1
  19. In fairness: 1. Fan voting is and has been pretty good in recent years with mostly the right players getting elected; 2. God love Daniel Murphy/Justin Turner but I doubt either would have won the voting even if they were on the ballot.

  21. I turned on Al-Yankazeera to watch Humber only to find that not only are the MFYs still playing "God Bless America" at every game (enough, already) they TELEVISE IT! Seriously, this is what's wrong with America.
  22. Thru 6 now.
  23. Edgy DC wrote: That may be the Shake Shackers' choice. Indeed, and I'm happy to lay blame on them as well as the Mets for this problem.
  24. soupcan wrote: Tootsie Pop or no, if I'm having a burger at Citi, I'm going Shake Shack. I know, but sometimes I just can't be bothered with that line. Forget the outfield walls, the single dumbest thing about Citi Field is that they haven't put a second Shake Shack location in the park. It boggles the mind that they saw fit to put in a second Blue Smoke and a second Box Frites location yet there remains only one Shake Shack.
