  1. Edgy DC wrote: Do they swing it that July 3 or something is always a getaway day for every team in the league, so half the teams can host fireworks on the third and the other half on the fourth? Nope. Getaway day is often a day game, so no fireworks. The Mets' [crossout]Fireworks[/crossout] Pyrotechnics Night is July 15.
  2. The other pitching matchups: Tue: Pelfrey v. Ted Lilly (L) Lilly was traded to the Dodgers at last year's deadline and then signed a 3 year extension this offseason (for $33M). Seems like a lot for a 35-year old pitcher but he's still a pretty reliable innings guy. 4.97 ERA and 1.29 WHIP; 106 H, 68 K, 18 BB in 96 innings this year. Gives up a lot of homers. Last faced the Mets in August 2009 when he pitched well against a truly atrocious lineup that included Pagan, Murphy, and a whole lot of players who are no longer Mets. Wed: Niese v. Hiroki Kuroda ® Kuroda is 6-9 but with a 2.90 ERA and respectable 1.21 WHIP. Effective fastball-slider pitcher. He's got about 5 career starts against the Mets but it felt like more because somehow I think I attended every one. He shut out the Mets for 8 innings last July in LA. Jason Bay hit a homer against him at Citi Field (!) in April 2010. Thu: Gee v. Clayton Kershaw ® Kershaw leads the NL in strikeouts and is a top 5 pitcher in IP, WHIP, Batting Average Against and Shutouts. 8-4 with a 3.23 ERA means he's not totally invincible but he's the best National League pitcher not employed by the Phillies. The only success the Mets have ever had against him was in May 2008 in what was Kershaw's second big league start.

  4. In fairness to Jerry, I think even he got the concept that in a tie game at home, the closer comes in to pitch in the 9th inning.
  5. Phil Cuzzi, Angel Hernandez, CB Bucknor, Joe West. Nobody knows why they are still employed.
  6. Leadoff walk and we're rolling here. Time to win it.
  7. Ok, maybe not. Good play by Gardener there and I was fine with them sending Duda. I think the advantage shifts back to us here, particularly getting another inning out of Rodriguez.
  8. This fucker's not immortal. C'mon Ruben, let's get the win.
  9. I'm not sure Beltran deserves to be there over, say, Andrew McCutchen.

  17. Honest mistakes are one thing but Layne was running towards third when the play was happening. He was late and out of position. Incompetence is unacceptable.
  18. Huge strikeout of Whiney.
  19. Bases loaded for Pagan with two outs in the fifth. If we want to win this game, now is the time.
  20. I want Paulino benched for inexcusable loafing on the bases. I don't care that he's slow; I don't care that he probably would have been out even if he ran as hard as he could. You don't try, you don't play. Make it happen Terry.

Because the Mets are really sockin' the ball, Knockin' those home runs over the wall. East side, West side, everybody's coming down, To meet the M-E-T-S Mets, of New York town. Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the streets, Where did they go? To MEET THE METS! Oh, they're hollerin' and cheerin' and they're jumpin' in their seats, Where did they go? To MEET THE METS! All the fans are true to the orange and blue, So hurry up and come on down - 'cause we've got ourselves a ball club, The Mets of New York town! Give 'em a yell! Give 'em a hand! And let 'em know you're rootin' in the stands! Come on and... Meet the Mets, meet the Mets, Step right up and greet the Mets. 23. It's real frustrating to not take advantage on an afternoon when Verlander wasn't nearly as good as he sometimes is. Pelfrey really needs a kick in the ass for the walks; them coming back to burn us was a predictable as the sun rising in the East tomorrow morning. I think Terry needs to be remindex about AL rules and how you don't have to pinch hit for your pitcher. I was surprised to not just have Carrasco finish the game.
  24. Vic Sage wrote: F-rod finishes, down by 3. F-U, Terry. When did he last pitch before this afternoon?
  25. Well, that was an interesting game. Let's get down to the details: The Jose-Jose chant was started by a guy about 5 rows behind me and found a few other willing participants. Jose was also implored by Tiger fans sitting near the Mets dugout to sign with the Tigers in the offseason. He smiled and put his hands over his ears. The key hit in the game - lest we not forget - was the Hairston triple in the first that really set the tone for the whole game. Bay also had several nice plays in left in the first two innings (back when Capuano was still working on that perfect game. Cabrera's first homer was good but that shot to center was *impressive.* Announced in stadium as 455 feet. Terry was out of the dugout like a rocket after it went out. There was some inordinate delay when Terry was trying to bring Byrdak in and he repeatedly signaled with his left hand before Byrdak actually emerged. Leyland came out and had a long discussion with Ed Hickox about this. Too bad this didn't give Terry a chance to change his mind about the choice of pitcher. Parnell registered numerous pitches over 100 on the stadium gun, including one at 103. His walk of Cabrera - with two outs, nobody on, switch hitter Martinez following as the tying run: infuriating. Getting Martinez there was one of the key moments of course so I suppose he can be forgiven. Rodriguez was warming in the 9th and had the Mets not added those extra two runs he would have come in to the game. Attention Terry: it's the AL rules, pitchers don't hit, and both Parnell and Isringhausen were possibly pulled too early. Some questionable lineup choices when the game started but since there were 23 runs it's hard to complain about either Collins or Leyland in that regard. Kelly pitching in the 9th was funny and something else to check off my in-person baseball game bucket list. Lots of laughs in the Mets dugout whenit was happening, particularly after the fans started reminding Hairston that there was "no pressure!" to not strike out.
