Yes, and David Wright could get run over by a city bus tomorrow too. I think we all understand the risks of long term contracts. I do not understand what you mean by the "trajectory his career is heading in now." I was surprised by the comment about his only having one all-star selection too. I see WAR of 4.6 (2010), 2.5 (2011), 5.8 (2012), 3.7 (2013), 6.2 (2014) and 6.5 (2015) and that certainly seems to me to be a player worth signing to a long term deal if he's only 26 years old.

He's been a very good to excellent fielder, but experience suggests defense peaks early. It's been five years since that shiny rookie season and he hasn't made an All Star team since. I'd like to have him, but won't miss him. Eight years? That's silly talk. 8 years seems like a long time, but he also turned 26 in August. At the end of an 8 year deal, he will be 34, younger than Zobrist is now.
  3. I agree, they should sign both Heyward and Zobrist
  4. Darren O'Day re-signed with the Orioles: 4 years, $31 million. I was particularly disappointed to read this but then saw this note from ESPN: "O’Day’s wife is a Fox News correspondent based in D.C., and it was no secret that he wanted to stay in the Baltimore/Washington area."
  5. A note I saw from David Schoenfield on ESPN: So here's an idea: Move David Wright to first base, acquire Frazier, then trade Lucas Duda for bullpen help or a center fielder. The Mets were willing to trade Zack Wheeler for a year and two months of Carlos Gomez. Would they trade Wheeler for two seasons of Frazier?
  6. Why not just sign Heyward and not have to give up Harvey? You lose a pick for signing Heyward, gain a similar-level pick for losing Murphy. All it costs is money and the Mets should have plenty of it. --- (Yes, I realize that's a separate issue). On the assumption that the Mets can't afford premium free agents, this is probably not a half-bad deal.
  7. 1. Familia 2. Reed is under team control but would cost about $5.5M for one year. Seems like a good idea. 3-5. Robles, Gilmartin, Goeddel are all under team control and cheap. 6. Darren O'Day was not extended a qualifying offer from the Orioles. All he costs is money. Go get him. 7. I like Antonio Bastardo as a lefty to add to the pen. Also a free agent, also no qualifying offer extended. He did do a 50-game Biogenesis suspension in 2013 but was very good for Pittsburgh this year and was also pretty good when he was with the Phillies before that. Also: Verrett under team control and cheap Montero Blevins, if he will re-sign cheap

For what it's worth, I personally think it's likely that Sosa used PEDs. But I also know that a "leak" of anonymous survey testing is nowhere close to any reliable evidentiary standard. I generally waver between finding this topic maddening and depressing. The arbitrary line-drawing of who "cheated," or who brought "shame" to baseball are a bunch of nonsense. Just put the best players in.

Otherwise, I think this is a perfect ballot.
  10. dgwphotography wrote: Yep, and McGwire minus the juice is nothing more than a glorified Dave Kingman... Why are you so sure that Kingman didn't use "the juice" too? If you want to discount the 140 extra homers that McGwire had over Kingman because of steriods, fine. McGwire had an on-base percentage a hundred points higher than Kingman for his career. (Or is that "the Juice" too?) Sammy Sosa never tested positive (like Palmeiro). He never admitted using steriods (as did McGwire). He never was criminally prosecuted (Bonds, Clemens). What's everybody's problem with him? The corked bat?
  11. Why does everyone assume Ken Griffey Jr. didn't do steroids? I wouldn't say I'm surprised, but I am always somewhat confused by voters in these polls who have no problem with Griffey or Piazza but won't vote for Bonds or Clemens.

  13. Same here.
  14. I actually had to use the text-alert-to-security feature in the ballpark because idiots in my section were thisclose to felonious assault on Royals fans sitting 3 rows behind. The Royals fans were cheering like douchebags, but still. We're better than the Dodgers in every possible way, including that we're not attempting to murder visiting fans. Did Familia's totally unnecessary appearance last night make a difference? I kind of wonder if it did. I know Daniel and Wilmer are fan favorites and I have advocated for them in the past but I couldn't help but wonder what things would be like with better defensive middle infielders. Maybe that's unfair given my strange viewing angle of the game, and some of those balls past them would have been past good fielders regardless.

  20. I acted as an adult and honored responsibilities and commitments instead of blowing them off and hopping a plane to go to KC to see the games. I am intending to right that wrong by going to the game Friday night.
  21. How about a GIDP? Feel like we haven't seen one of those in a while.
