This has been a weakness for quite a long time and is a big reason why the Mets haven’t had sustained success. I think that suggests inadequate funding of that portion of operations but it could also be poor choices in who’s been doing the work. — Trainspotting: Neither Turner nor Bay were drafted/originally signed by the Mets.
  2. I’d think we’d have to start with scouting and player development, right? This is the one place you can get new players just for the cost of signing them. It might be ownership being cheap (not being aggressive enough in the international FA market; refusing to sign players for over-slot; not investing in scouting sufficiently) or it could be poor drafting, poor scouting, and poor luck. Quick, name the five best position players that the Mets either drafted or signed as undrafted/int’l free agents in the last 25 years. Wright and Reyes, sure. Murphy. And, um...Carlos Gomez? Duda? Jay Payton? There’s not a whole lot there.
  3. Especially because signing your own players costs only money. No draft pick loss (signing other FAs). No player loss (trade). We know who these players are. Sign them all to extensions.
  4. I am certain they will try to PH him as much as possible in the Braves series but I am worried it won’t be all 3 games. Sadly, I am out of town for the Saturday game but trying to calculate the best odds of seeing David in one of the other games.
  5. Of course they will induct him into the Mets HOF and retire his number. I expect these events, as well as the last start on the 29th will all be done at separate times, of course.
  6. I think it’s fair to say a press conference is more likely to be held if news was positive (a return to the active roster) than if it was that he won’t be playing in the majors this year.
  7. I have an idea. It’s rooted in common sense. And that idea is that the statement is not true.
  8. I really thought the Mets were not doing much of anything wrong here: there’s not much sense activating Wright unless he can contribute at the major league level. But then they go and say stupid stuff like this, and one is left to wonder why this organization simply cannot learn how to stop having PR disasters. “Mickey Callaway said David Wright has not been cleared medically to play in Major League games. Callaway said there is a different medical threshold required to play in MLB games versus minor league games.”

Then again, I guess the Mets CAN win despite the Wilpons. After all, they’ve won the division twice in the last 30 seasons.
  10. Wheeler was actually decent. Occasional untimely homers will happen. He’s also one of our best hitters. Vargas has no value at all that I can discern.
  11. Wait. AJ Ramos was allowed to pitch in what was a close game? Has Mickey fallen and hit his head?
  12. Utterly predictable, sadly. We can’t be expected to win games with Nido, Flores, and Reyes as regulars.
  13. So...when do they release Reyes? Tomorrow? Or immediately after tonight’s game?
  14. 80 games for [crossout:1nzlv14x]Steroids[/crossout:1nzlv14x] a diuretic which is classified as a masking agent. As per Ken Rosenthal. Thoughts: 1. Probably an issue for the next CBA, but his DL time shouldn’t count against this. 2. When superstars are still getting these suspensions (cf. Ryan Braun), one wonders if the penalties are high enough to remain effective deterrents.
  15. So, did the umpires’ card actually have Nimmo-Cabrera-Flores-Bruce? Flores bats out of turn (skipping Cabrera). No appeal, so his turn is legalized and next batter after him on the umpires’ card (Bruce) is supposed to bat. And since Bruce then doesn’t, he’s the batter called out?
  16. Also incredibly stupid: allowing extra challenges when the manager has no challenges.
  17. Cespedes wants to steal third pretty badly.
  18. Two recent in-game developments that are incredibly stupid: Asking the umpires for a “hold.” Just challenge the call or don’t. The phantom intentional walk.
  19. At the game. Early hook for Matz didn’t make any sense; he was cruising through 6 and had <90 pitches.
  20. Funny. Wayne Randazzo just mentioned the top 5 on the pregame show and I had just come over here to post it as a trivia question.
  21. We could’ve had Walker over Reyes, though.
  22. So. Can we get Nimmo to play catcher, and Conforto at second base?
  23. Strange no PH here for Flores.
  24. Not good. Maybe we need a Reyes Deathwatch instead.
