  1. Zach Lee wearing Wally Backman's old No. 86.
  2. Too many hours in the Florida sun will make a man see things that ain't there. Gomez just swung through strike three like a No. 85.
  3. Gomez played today, clad in 85.
  4. Murray Chass tells stories, flattering and otherwise, from his decades of knowing the man he called Franny. http://www.murraychass.com/?p=11928http://www.murraychass.com/?p=11928
  5. Santiago was quietly becoming my Unfairly Overlooked candidate for sixth starter/long man. He ain't making the case today.
  6. Matt Ehalt from the Record and Wally Matthews most recently with the News headed to new dedicated Yahoo venture called Queens Baseball Club, which hypes itself as members-only and insidery. http://queensbaseballclub.comhttp://queensbaseballclub.com
  7. Nats signed Tony Sipp. Carlos Gonzalez to the Tribe on a minor league deal.
  8. During today's game, Wayne Randazzo reported the still not quite active for work visa reasons Carlos Gomez has grabbed 23. He is listed without number on mets.com, where Keon Broxton is still 23 Such intrigue...
  9. Five Mets notched one double and one triple, but no homer during their team tenure. Leroy Stanton was one of them. The others? One was a teammate of Ryan's and Stanton's. One was traded for a future Hall of Famer. One grouped his Met extra-base hits a dozen years apart. One didn't steal a base as a Met but wasn't likely to be mistaken for a tortoise.
  10. Sent to the minor league side: Tebow. Following him: Rhame, Sewald, Herrera, Caminero, Liriano, Gimenez, Sanchez.
  11. Royals grabbed Martin Maldonado. One year, $2.5 million plus incentives.
  12. Mets release one of the rescuers of their 2016 Wild Card bid. T.J.'s not having suitably recovered from TJS cited as reason for release.
  13. Gomez issued No. 85, at least for now. Perhaps a nod to his birth year.
  14. Nothing "presumably" about him not attending. Jeff Wilpon statement released by the Mets: We've been in contact with the Seaver family and are aware of his health situation. Although he's unable to attend the '69 Anniversary, we are planning to honor him in special ways and have included his family in our plans. Our thoughts are with Tom, Nancy and the entire Seaver family.
  15. Seaver family statement, via Anthony DiComo on Twitter: The family is deeply appreciative of those who have supported Tom throughout his career...and who do so now by honoring his request for privacy. This presumably ensures Tom will not be attending the Fiftieth Anniversary reunion of the 1969 Mets at Citi Field in late June. I believe he started missing Hall of Fame induction weekend, at which he was a steadfast regular since his own induction, in 2016, Piazza's year. At the time, Marty Noble mentioned in his coverage that the Lyme disease made traveling difficult for Tom. There hadn't been any boilerplate quotes with his name attached in the Met press releases when deGrom won the Cy Young last November, which seemed like the tipoff that Tom was no longer even a nominally public figure. Obviously this sucks on 41,000 levels. May he and his family experience the least bad of this.
  16. From Newsday this past weekend, on Art Shamsky's new 1969 book (co-authored with Erik Sherman): Shamsky wrote that Seaver suffers from short-term memory loss, which Seaver told him can be traced to Lyme disease, a bacterial infection transmitted by ticks, contracted in 1991 when he lived in Greenwich, Connecticut. "Hey, man, once you've got it, you've got it forever," Seaver said to Shamsky. Bud Harrelson (when he, Jerry Koosman and Ron Swoboda joined Art on a pilgrimage to Seaver's home in 2017 -- before Buddy's diagnosis of Alzheimer's became public) told Shamsky, "He can forget things that happened just a few minutes before. And he repeats himself a lot. But when he gets his rest, he still has a lot of energy." The Newsday article never used the word dementia, but somebody with knowledge of the situation told me last year that's what was going on. I was hoping it was hyperbole.
  17. Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times tweets the following: From the Hall of Fame: Tom Seaver's family announced today that he has been diagnosed with dementia. Tom will continue to work in his beloved vineyard at his California home, but has chosen to completely retire from public life.
  18. Best thing to happen to magazines since periodical rate postage.
  19. Tom Seaver makes a stealth appearance on Mannix in the fall of '74. http://i65.tinypic.com/2z820rd.jpghttp://i65.tinypic.com/2z820rd.jpg
  20. https://i1.wp.com/onesnladay.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/2-9-1985_0.12.19.00.jpg?ssl=1> Christopher Guest and Billy Crystal as the Minkman Brothers, of novelty toy infamy, at Mets Fantasy Camp, on SNL, Season 10, Episode 13, February 9, 1985. Ed Charles and Bud Harrelson appear.
  21. Callaway expressed non-concern, though that could also not mean anything.
  22. Rosario's x-ray negative. Also, Nimmo's back from his virus that it has been confirmed was not chicken-related.
  23. All the Metspeak here: https://metsinsider.mlblogs.com/al-leiter-joins-mets-as-baseball-operations-advisory-160b613f90ff?sf99486658=1https://metsinsider.mlblogs.com/al-leiter-joins-mets-as-baseball-operations-advisory-160b613f90ff?sf99486658=1
  24. Amed Rosario hit in hand by pitch in Red Sox game, leaves game, goes for x-ray.
  25. Rob Whalen, whose name may ring a bell from being one of the minor leaguers the Mets sent to Atlanta for Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson in 2015, has announced he's retired at 25. Pitched a little for Braves and Mariners. Acknowledged his battle with depression last year.
