  1. The old No. 4, Wilmer Flores, reportedly to sign one-year deal with D'Backs.
  2. Watching JED LOWRIE sitting next to BRODIE VAN WAGENEN answering a question about being reunited with CHILI DAVIS, it struck me how quickly Baseball Mad-Libs morphs into the team you root for.
  3. =bmfc1 post_id=1204 time=1547588975 user_id=73] =Centerfield post_id=1171 time=1547567502 user_id=65]The only drawback is that Jack Renheimer is behind him and not, say, Conforto.
  4. Shepherded Gooden, Darling, Fernandez, Aguilera, Cone, McDowell and Myers into long-lasting, successful major league careers. That's some coaching right there.
  5. The Mets had no confidence in me. They weren't the only ones.
  6. Two specific recollections of Rick Down, Mets Hitting Coach, neither of them having him to do with coaching Mets hitters: 1) In the 2006 postseason and during the 2007 season, the Mets beamed on DiamondVision a "Sweet Caroline" video to general Shea approval (the backlash to copying the Red Sox came later, when the song was injected into Citi Field). In it, when Neil Diamond sang the part about reaching out, there was a clip of Down reacting effusively to something from the dugout, both of his index fingers pointed skyward. After he was dismissed, the video went on, but Rick was edited out. 2) Jon Stewart's first pitch before Game Two of the 2006 NLCS was not expert, a fact the Daily Show host called much attention to on his program. He showed footage of himself returning to the Mets dugout in shame for his lousy effort, many in uniform razzing him good-naturedly. The microphone picked up Down barking at him something along the lines of "that's for George W. Bush!" Maybe it wasn't that good-natured.
  7. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: My take, which happens to be the correct one btw, is that ITS RAINING METS is just a way of saying "When It Rains, It Pours" as a means of collecting all the bad news besetting the club while showing a picture of them taking cover in a soaked dugout. INTO EACH LIFE, A LITTLE METS MUST FALL would have been too long, but that's how I took IT'S RAINING METS. Not mentioned on back page, perhaps because it wasn't clear that it was a serious injury, this was also the game when Lagares went out for the year. Very gloomy day.
  8. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Rick Down, Mets hitting coach from 2005 until the 2007 All-Star break, has died at age 68 following a lengthy illness. Down was in the dugout alongside Willie Randolph as the Mets batted their way to an NL East title...and was let go when the lumber suddenly grew heavier the next year.
  9. "He throws hard" is a very enticing description for a minor league reliever your team has just acquired in a midseason salary dump. Hence, Bobby Wahl enticed. I was surprised his ERA in seven appearances climbed above 10. I remember him being promising. Or remember Mickey Callaway thinking he was promising enough to hand him the ball late in games for a rookie. Callaway was different from Collins in terms of trusting less accomplished less relievers, so maybe it just seemed he had earned his way into the late innings. More likely there was nothing to lose, so why not give a hard-throwing rookie a chance? Seven strikeouts and two home runs allowed in five-and-a-third. There was promise. And progress to be made. Maybe in Milwaukee.
  10. On an episode of M*A*S*H, Hawkeye suffered back pain attributable to reading about the success back home of another doctor, the "incredibly average" Vernon Parsons. At his best, Kevin Plawecki was incredibly average. He was rarely at his best.
  11. I'll be a heretic and go with RAINING METS over SMILE HIGH even in a losing cause. The latter is clever enough, but the former perfectly captured the mood and the moment. I didn't like the result of that day's game, but I appreciate the back page it left behind.
  12. Skytacular article. I remember the pens very clearly. What an era of good feeling that day was.
  13. Back when Jacob deGrom was occasionally mortal, in 2017, he gave up two home runs to Broxton, one in advance of the bullpen's Mother's Day meltdown in Milwaukee, one the night Mr. Met was captured giving a fan the finger. With this obstacle to flawlessness removed, Jake's ERA should sink further, one would hopefully extrapolate.
  14. If you remember Matt Harvey flirting with a perfect game against the White Sox (the nosebleed game), that was Santiago keeping the Mets off the board as the opposition starter. Much was made of his growing up a Mets fan in Jersey. It was six years ago, but still impressive.
  15. News replaces its sports editor with a Director of Digital Audience Development for Sports. https://awfulannouncing.com/online-outlets/actually-the-new-york-daily-news-is-replacing-the-sports-editor-role-with-a-new-version-hiring-kyle-wagner.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitterhttps://awfulannouncing.com/online-outlets/actually-the-new-york-daily-news-is-replacing-the-sports-editor-role-with-a-new-version-hiring-kyle-wagner.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter How this latest turn of affairs will affect future TCDs remains to be clicked.
  16. Marty Noble brings it here... https://tinyletter.com/NYBBWAA/letters/issue-6https://tinyletter.com/NYBBWAA/letters/issue-6 Love how much detail he retains from tracking a Spring Training story whose significance would have to be described as fleeting when it was reported.
  17. Benjamin Grimm wrote: My guess is that the "sports editing" is going to come out of Chicago and the Tribune headquarters. "Too much deGrom. Use a picture of Ditka instead."
  18. Who are these mystery voters who are automatically presumed to be choosing one cover or another? It's just the same bunch of us over and over.

  21. While the Snooze continues to lead the way in the Derby, the editor who oversaw these contending covers finds himself tied up for recycling. Eric Barrow has been dismissed and, according to a memo he sent around before leaving, the position of sports editor has been eliminated. Ah, who needs sports in a big city tabloid with multiple teams in every professional sport?
  22. Nothing made a Mets fan appreciate the catching stylings of Travin d'Arwecki more than relying on Tose Nobaton. Thought he might be useful based on a vague sense that he beat up on Mets pitching as a National. Or was that Wilson Ramos who most everybody here thought was Jesus Flores? Biggest moment during his September recall was when, while glued to the bench in the visitors' dugout at Fenway, poked around for the rat that was scampering by. He had been back on the roster for a spell without getting into a game but suddenly was getting camera time. Wore No. 59. I've long considered that the most hopeless of baseball numbers. Tripled in his first Mets AB, matching the feat of spiritual batterymate Eric Cammack. Here's to the Lobaton Galaxy of Stars. May Jose do that thing he does somewhere within it.
  23. =seawolf17 post_id=369 time=1546485396 user_id=91]Nope. Still never heard of him.
  24. Jerry Buchek was one of the first Mets I was conscious of because I had a Coca-Cola bottle cap with his face on the liner. It was part of a series, though that's the only one I had. I saved it for a few years then discarded it because licensing issue left him pictured sans logo and besides the crown (as bottle caps are known in the industry) was dented and who the hell was Jerry Buchek? Between the time the bottle cap fell into my hands and the time I decided I was no longer impressed by it, I had actually seen the Mets play...without Jerry Buchek. He might as well have been Scott Copeland to my unsophisticated thinking. When I interviewed Gary Cohen in 2008, I asked him if he had a favorite obscure-ish Met, one who didn't get talked about very often in the decades that followed. He said Jerry Buchek. Maybe he had the bottle cap, too. Was the protagonist in the http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2011/02/09/whats-the-story-jerrys/grandest win of the Salty Parker era.
