  1. 1983 cover alert: https://www.ebay.com/itm/TOM-SEAVER-NY-Mets-New-York-Sports-Magazine-May-1983-Premier-Edition-No-Label/302386622264?hash=item4667a5af38:g:Tu8AAOSwXJNZbSJ3:sc:USPSPriorityFlatRateEnvelope!42701!US!-1https://www.ebay.com/itm/TOM-SEAVER-NY-Mets-New-York-Sports-Magazine-May-1983-Premier-Edition-No-Label/302386622264?hash=item4667a5af38:g:Tu8AAOSwXJNZbSJ3:sc:USPSPriorityFlatRateEnvelope!42701!US!-1 http://i67.tinypic.com/2vj6g4p.jpghttp://i67.tinypic.com/2vj6g4p.jpg
  2. 50th anniversary of 1969 would have been a decent theme, too.
  3. Good to see all who were intended to be presented in full. Still think they should have Jaked it.
  4. The Piazza cover isn't really a Met cover. It chronicled his trade from the Dodgers to the Marlins and hit the street before the Mets got involved. However, it is Met in spirit, not just for the immediate followup to the Trade of the Century, but because at the now defunct Roosevelt Field outpost of the Mets Clubhouse Store, some bright manager pasted that picture of Mike under a Mets cap to lure you inside. The sign stayed in place throughout the 1998 season, if I recall correctly. All-Star Sports truly has the pulse of the sporting nation in the spring of 1970 (Richie Allen and Nate Thurmond, such malcontents, not like that proud Stan Mikita). Props to them for going with Koosman over Seaver if just for mixing things up. Boog appears to be in for a brushback. Darryl's plenty contemplative for a Super Sophomore. He was certainly the Apple of my eye. I get the Bobby V treatment for Grandy and Thor (I needed to read the cutline to realize that was Curtis), but isn't Mr. Met goofy enough without mustache and glasses? An eclectic batch, to be sure. For attempting to indoctrinate a nation of children into the charms of the Madcap Mets, I'll go with SI Kids, which I'm not sure I knew was still a thing as recently as 2016.
  5. Great idea to keep the Yearbook Cover Derby up to date. 2019: Talk about a bet-hedger. You were just blessed with one of the greatest pitching seasons in modern baseball history and instead of truly spotlighting the pitcher (a la Seaver and the 200-strikeout record in 1975), you position as him first among a bushel of equals. Yay, deGrom is in the foreground, but, oh, we have to get portions of ten other guys in there because we're marketing the whole team, not just our best player. I'd guess this had something to do with not wanting to present deGrom heroically across the entire season in case negotiations went awry (don't know what the publication deadline was), but it's not like his Cy Young didn't already happen and they didn't schedule a celebratory bobblehead for it. I sort of dug the multiple player treatment in 2016 because it was a team effort to win the pennant but this mostly feels like nobody wants to pick a side or alienate any possible purchaser. "We need to satisfy the Wilson Ramos customers." 1967 can rest easy for another season.
  6. Reeder was Ed Coleman's interview today, during which the pitcher thanked his infield defense by name, pausing to include Carlos Baerga, which I found classy and beautiful. The pregame show segment was sponsored by a union, though not the Irony Workers Local 1994.
  7. Jeff McNeil – LF Pete Alonso – 1B Robinson Canó – 2B Michael Conforto - RF Wilson Ramos – C J.D. Davis – 3B Amed Rosario - SS Keon Broxton - CF Zack Wheeler – RHP First roster move of 2019 season: Travis d'Arnaud activated, Nido sent down. First time a Met has come off the IL as opposed to the DL.
  8. =kcmets post_id=6551 time=1554606066 user_id=53]Mets hit five HR today and Gary says it's the first time at home ever at Polo/Shea/Citi? I'm sure he's right, but hard to believe all these years.
  9. With his sixth-inning blast off Patrick Corbin, Michael Conforto breaks his third-place tie for most regular season home runs by a Met at Citi Field, moving up to 39, one ahead of Curtis Granderson and eleven behind David Wright for second place. For those thinking long-term in this age of contract extensions for budding superstars, it was Michael's 77th overall, placing him 175 behind Darryl Strawberry. TOP TEN CITI FIELD HR LEADERS Regular Season/2009-2019 Duda 71 Wright 49 Conforto 39 Granderson 38 Flores 37 Cabrera 30 I. Davis 30 Cespedes 28 Murphy 27 Reyes 25 Only active Met within range of the Top 10 at the moment is Travis d'Arnaud, at 22 and holding in 11th place. Strong years will catapult Brandon Nimmo (12; 17th), Todd Frazier (10; T-19th), Dom Smith (8; T-22) and Juan Lagares (8; T-22) into the conversation. New to the annals as of Saturday: J.D. Davis, 2; Robinson Cano, 1; and, poised to come along fast on the outside rail, Pete Alonso, 1.
  10. Hor potato of a game, but the Metsies mashed it.
  11. Matz looked good after the first. Davis went deep. And it's sunny.
  12. Article explores how Mets can't score at Citi Field, Mets open at Citi Field by not scoring. That's some prescient journalism right there.
  13. I'm all for pun and games, but shouldn't it be summer in the 'Hamton?

I was going to guess 1985, based on the wrap around Straw's hand stretching up to his thumb.
  15. Perhaps it's coming up in a later round, but that Dead End Kids photo appeared to have been culled from a shoot for New York magazine in 1988 when Doc and Darryl appeared on the cover in that pose in advance of the NLCS. I think it's fair to ask WTF is Alexa? Tom is the Sportsman of any epoch, but I'm fondest of that premature Darryl treatment.
  16. Murph had to sit out Game One. Kiner, Healy and Staub each took three innings alongside Thorne. Ron issued a statement today saying he doesn't want any of this to detract from the Home Opener and, besides, because of a legal threat, he's been advised to stay mum.
  17. Not the most splashy bunch. I was glad to see Doc still rated the cover, but his No. 64 phase was indicative that the end was encroaching. Strawberry's not "the Franchise," even though it's an attractive enough portrayal if a little generic (I don't believe IS shot this themselves). Seaver's been better served than in that drawing. The Big Three of 2016 reminds me of how Ron Darling gets details wrong. When things were going awry with Met pitchers who weren't Harvey, deGrom or Familia, he'd throw shade at that the way SI put all the Mets' starters on their cover -- which they didn't. It was these guys after each had excelled en route to the World Series. It was nice to see the Mets get the Northeast season preview cover for a change. I'll take it over Darryl, though I'm pleased to see Inside Sports represented. It was no longer in its initial golden age of Newsweek's ownership by 1984, but the magazine was a welcome presence for however long it lasted.
  18. Ronnie apparently made the same basic assertion in his previous book, save for the juicy racial angle. No peep was raised.
  19. It's possible the Seaver cover was the first time I really noticed the racing stripe, having been unable to watch more than Tampa-St. Pete local news highlights of the 1983 Mets to that point. As a result, they will always strike me a decent Seaver fit. Conversely, when I see an image with the Seaver stripe show up to represent Tom's prime in a print or video retrospective, I know whoever chose it is clueless or at least callow.
  20. As part of his publicity tour, Ron guested on Darren Meenan's (the 7 Line Guy) Orange and Blue Thing, a fine podcast with a video component (Darling had Darren to his house to tape it). At one point, Ronnie was asked about his playing career ending and prefaced his answer by saying there are two names he'll never forget, "Julio Vazquez" being the first of them. Who the hell was that, I wondered. Does he mean Javier Vazquez? What does Javier Vazquez have to do with Ron Darling? Ron identified Julio Vazquez as the pitcher who took his place in the Mets' rotation. Oh, I realized, he means Julio Valera, sort of deflating the claim that his is a name Darling will never forget. My hunch (from thirteen years of SNY, besides the above anecdote) is Ronnie doesn't have the most amazing retention of detail, and given that Dykstra no doubt said disgusting stuff regularly, it may be hard to pin down exactly when and where Dykstra uttered a particularly disgusting remark. It might have been in the on-deck circle before Game Three of the World Series. It might have been some other time about some other person. It's more than thirty years ago. Who remembers? "Nailed" by Christopher Frankie, which came out in 2013, detailed that among other fine qualities, Dykstra's skeletal structure includes quite a few racist bones.
  21. Seaver's return rating the cover was a victory for news judgment. My heart figuratively jumped out of my chest when I came upon it far from New York (at the appropriately named Hometown Newsstand up the road from my dorm). Beautifully written cover story by Steve Wulf, too. Murphy also earned his cover, though it annoys me that it was a regional edition, with other markets getting saddled with a Royal or a Bengal or somebody else. All of America should have been able to have marveled at Murph. Baseball Digest really developed a crush on HoJo. "Met Supersub Rod Gaspar Has Orioles All Askew" would have been a better 1969 cover line. As if Brooks Robinson was a big deal compared to the Mets' fifth outfielder. I really do like the Murph image and how it captured that fleeting moment after the pennant was secured and before the World Series went to hell. But Seaver could and did go home again, bathed in sunlight and bereft of busyness. I'll take the pitcher over the hitter.
  22. =metirish post_id=5861 time=1554144758 user_id=72] Lenny is a wanker I am sure, Darling too, selling a book ? it was so obvious after he came back to Twitter from a break he was selling something.
  23. Four pretty faces. Went with Mona Lisa, the only player with the confidence to rock the green sleeves. Really loved that cover when it came out, still love it. Represents, to me, the last gasp of that era when the Mets were the de facto baseball team to think of when somebody needed one. I'm suspicious of "people forget" as a preface because I don't know that people forget something as much as it just doesn't come up all that often, but I'm willing to say people forget what a huge deal it was to have Pedro Martinez in a Mets uniform in 2005 (if not 2015). Face of the franchise for a year and change -- and boy did things change once he came around. Viva Los Mets...even if the whole thing was a bit of a contrivance. Tom and Mazz appear to be eyeing each other. Pitcher vs. Hitter, sizing each other up across the span of a decade.
  24. How many men on third for the Mets? With J.D. Davis's debut this weekend, 172 in all, 43 since David Wright came along in July of 2004. Davis is the first altogether post-David third baseman, as the most vestigially legendary of Met positions officially reinstalls its revolving door until another 5 in our scorecard (if not with a 5 on his back) comes along and rips it out of its hinges for another dozen or so seasons. Here's the whole freshly updated gang... 172. J.D. Davis 03/30/2019 171. Jack Reinheimer 08/15/2018 170. Jeff McNeil 07/24/2018 169. Jose Bautista 05/25/2018 168. Luis Guillorme 05/11/2018 167.
