  1. I'm trying to imagine somebody who doesn't much care for baseball deciding that if they'd only tweak the game enough, damn, I want to watch baseball.
  2. The last (or most recent) Met to reach base in a postseason game, with a pinch-hit in the eighth inning of the 2016 Wild Card Game. A quarter of the offense against Madison Bumgarner that night.
  3. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=2446 time=1549477329 user_id=68] Phillip or Phil?
  4. The Jeff McNeil of his moment, which passed quickly and without much in the way of results. Played left field early in 2018 but injury-injected roster shuffles didn't give him the time to flower as the next Zobrist (whose pioneering work as a starting utilityman should earn him residuals). He played third while Smith played first on the final home Sunday of 2017 and I couldn't help but notice we had the least athletic-looking corners I'd seen in a while.
  5. James Loney has signed with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League as a first baseman, pitcher (!) and coach.
  6. No matter how he was pitching, his weekly spot with Pete McCarthy on WOR was a delight.
  7. The eternally detestable Miami Marlins have sign the eternally embraceable Curtis Granderson to a minor league contract.
  8. Friend was just that to his old teammate Ralph Kiner, joining the likes of Harwell, Feller, Berra and Seaver when Ralph was celebrated at Shea in 2007.
  9. Bob Friend, who finished his distinguished career with the 1966 Mets, passes away at 88.
  10. In accepting his Cy Young at the BBWAA dinner last weekend, deGrom did make mention that he was a little sorry he "didn't win the big award," which I now understand to mean sharing a shower with Maja's lovely cousin Brigid.
  11. Nattering nabobs revel today in "negative" News receiving a fair hear hearing and, ultimately, the grandest prize Stockholm has to offer. Over on the TCD boards, there is a bit of clucking over the winning cover being referred to twice in the official release as "MIDNIGHT MADNESS," rather than its proper name of "MIDNIGHT BADNESS," but whaddaya expect from a bunch of Internet jerks obviously holed up in their mother's basement? Congratulations to direct democracy and all who make it click. There could be hope for the system yet. May the next TCD choose its champion between a World Series-winning front page and some intensely clever pun from June.
  12. Lifetime bans lasting less than four years kind of takes the bite out of lifetime bans.
  13. Until Howard makes with the UTLEY U BUTTLEY banner, he's suspect.
  14. Ricco, 50, will report to Mets COO Jeff Wilpon on special business and finance projects, including significant construction projects the Mets are planning for their Spring Training facility and other minor league facilities. Ricco will remain a resource and advisor to Mets Executive Vice President, General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen and the rest of the Baseball Department, with continuing responsibilities and oversight of the Baseball Operations budget and Major League payroll. Capitalization does not take a holiday in Corporate Metspeak.
  15. John Ricco gets a new title and new responsibilities, per a Met press release: Senior Vice President, Senior Strategy Officer, shifting him from baseball ops to business stuff. My father likely would have called this a sinecure.
  16. Red sox sign Jenrry Mejia to a minor league deal, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
  17. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: I saw a few seconds of a Michael Kay interview with Ron Howard where Ron sez he's a Dodger fan first but once in New York adopted the Mets as his club. During the 2006 NLDS, Ron was interviewed by Julie Donaldson of the defunct (now, not then) Mets Weekly at Shea. The director diplomatically said, in essence, he was a Dodgers fan first, a Mets fan locally. The host tried to rechristen him as a Mets fan since "this is a Mets show," but Ron, smiling but unflinchingly, wasn't having it. The Kay interview seems to have first aired in 2013, so perhaps he's put that Hollywood hogwash behind him.
  18. Gee was on the DL in 2014, making him fair game for Jay Horwitz to drag him over to our Blogger Night group for a brief quasi-media scrum. This was the season when no Mets pitcher had gotten a hit for more than a month into the season, a streak that was either ended by rookie deGrom or at least put into stark relief by his early success as a hitter. I asked Dillon a lighthearted question about Jake maybe giving the other pitchers a couple of pointers. Dillon's response regarding the pitchers' hitting to that point: "We suck." He wasn't smiling. I appreciated that.
  19. Sandy Alderson, who announced at BBWAA dinner that he's cancer-free, is joining the A's front office as a special advisor.
  20. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=1976 time=1548731657 user_id=68] =G-Fafif post_id=1390 time=1547842128 user_id=55] That at least one of those cards might reappear when the Mets next play the Diamondbacks is both something to hotly anticipate and not a little sad.
  21. Dillon Gee, most recently a Chunichi Dragon, calls it a career.
  22. It has been suggested by a Twitterite who has thought about it that Mets likely have a trade lined up for Cecchini.
  23. Michael Cuddyer went into the Twins HOF in 2017. I initially misread a "this date in Twins history" as a current thing, but let's continue to enjoy Cuddy's good fortune.
  24. The Twins inducted their special assistant Michael Cuddyer into their HOF in 2017. (I initially misread this as new news, but presumably he's still enjoying his status in Minnesota.)
