They'd rather regurgitate the same "What the Mets need" type of story that they can churn out in 15 minutes. But I'm surprised there aren't any "Wilpon Sucks" stories. It would take ten minutes to write "Wilpon owes it to the fans to fund a big market payroll. Whether it's Madoff or something else, I don't really know and don't care to investigate, but I know he's not spending money!" That type of lazy column would get shared a bazilllion times. Why are we ENCOURAGING more lazy writing? If they cant be bothered to do the research then they shouldn't publish baseless crap about the Wilpons.
  2. He goes in as a MET or we storm Cooperstown, right?
  3. A 13-man pitching staff leaves only four bench players! terrible idea. if the Mets plan to go "bullpen heavy" i'd propose this: 1. Focus on acquiring bullpen arms who regularly pitch multiple innings at a time, screw the 1 inning reliever. 2. stockpile guys with options. burn a guy out for 10 days then send him down, let him rest and pitch once every few days in AAA/AA, bring him back - you could manage workload this way without the major league staff being 13 men. 3. skip the 5th start whenever the calendar allows and make him available in relief.

He was the old-school counterpart to DePodesta's new school. What we don't have anymore is DePo. Yeah, I don't think there's any reason to think that Sandy's crew is light on the scouting end of things. I just pulled a couple of examples out of my head to illustrate where I remembered that the clearly better long-term choice didn't necessarily look that way at the time, but every org. has multiple examples on each side of the ledger. Sandy, or his crew, made the right call on Duda vs Davis, haven't really 'whiffed' on any top draft picks (although some are still pending), and the only significant prospect they gave up recently netted them Cespedes (Steve Phillips would have dealt deGrom for a middle reliever six years ago). First Round for Alderson: 2016 - Justin Dunn can't find the strike zone, Anthony Kay had Tommy John surgery without throwing a pitch 2015 - no first rounder 2014 - Conforto! 2013 - Smith has been up and down 2012 - Cecchini looks like a utility infielder 2011 - Nimmo is either a real center fielder or a 4th outfielder, i still dont know which. I'd say the jury is still out on Alderson's overall drafting, but thats probably the case for most GMs until long after they are gone.
  5. Bruce is a guy I'm happy to come back to when nobody offers him that absurd number and he is looking for a one year deal near spring training.
  6. he loses contract dollars by coming over now - but if he really is (or can be marketed as) the "babe ruth of japan" he'll make a shit ton of endorsements.
  7. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Oh, horseradish. Without Miller and Curt Flood, these guys are essentially mildly-higher-paid field hands, or football players with fewer head injuries. You'd rather the reserve clause? Does the game honestly seem worse off as a sport to you because free agency exists? no, i'd prefer free agency for amateurs - but that doesnt mean it makes the game better - the game is worse off having missed games over labor issues that Miller was part of. he doesnt belong in and neither do the commissioners who let lockouts happen.

You're seriously comparing Nymr83 to the man responsible for the Holocaust because he disagrees with you about a Hall of Fame vote? I don't see how that helps advance the discussion, and I don't think it's good for the forum. If I'm the only one who feels this way, I'll stop. But I think someone needs to say that this is just wrong. i'm glad i blocked that POS, why is he still allowed to post here?
  9. Fman99 wrote: Trading these guys would be stupid as all hell. without knowing who is coming back that is hard to say. I'd be disinclined to trade either. Less so Rosario given the ease of finding a 1B type who can slug with Wilpon's dollars
  10. Miller to me is the exact opposite of a hall of famer - he was BAD for the GAME of baseball, even if he was GOOD for its employees. but if commissioners who ban black players are in "bad for the game" becomes hard to use as a standard
  11. SwitchHitter wrote: Should have been an option for "none" so that people choosing it could be tallied. Not saying I'm voting that way ... still pondering but ... thats always the problem with these polls. even with a "none" does a vote for None, A, and B means two people voted (None, A& or three (None, A, ? you need an "i voted" choice that everyone checks off.
  12. I hope the Mets aren't "all in" on Smith at this point - a capable backup at the position would be a very wise investment at this point. that doesnt need to be Gonzalez.
  13. Cabrera, if forced to choose. I would prefer neither of them be on the team.
  14. Edgy MD wrote: I'm pretty sure Nymr's got you blocked. But the MLBPA isn't the last word on whether the draft and other cost-control maneuvers aimed at amateurs persist. I hope it all comes crashing down tomorrow. Batshit? yeah, still blocked, a great decision and not one i'm likely to ever revisit as i once again enjoy visiting this board. certainly the MLBPA isn't the 'last word', but when a system benefits both them AND the owners that system isn't likely to change. i certainly wouldnt mind seeing it go away, i just dont think it will.
  15. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: The only thing the draft "equalizes" is how much $$ the bosses make dragging salaries down. i dont think it drags overall salaries down, it just distributes cash to established players over newcomers - which is why the union isn't ever going fight it - they actually prefer it even if they occasionally might feel the need to pay lip-service to the idea that it isnt fair.
  16. Which would be just fine. The Mets threw around their cash to vastly improve their AAA situation permanently. Awesome.
  17. Yeah, if you are going to do promotion/relegation you dony need new leagues, you already AAA AA etc just free them! There are plenty of other issues to work out though.
  18. Benjamin Grimm wrote: 6. Albany 97,660 Albany is 150 miles from New York, compared to 246 for Syracuse. I guess that city might be an option. They're currently a short-season Single-A city, and I'm sure they'd love to make the jump to Triple-A. I think, though, that it's more likely that the Mets will leverage Syracuse into improving or replacing the ballpark there. 97k doesn't tell the full story for Albany though, there are something like 15-20 colleges in the area plus the state government and all the hangers on that go with it.... All of which are out of session during the heart of baseball season, depressing the potential attendance base.
  19. 4x8 is preferable to 8x4 just because it lowers the chances of a bad team winning a division.
  20. I want whoever will abolish the "closer" position and use the best relievers in the hardest spots, without regard for inning. Someone who acts like the "save" doesnt exist.
  21. I found a solution that makes almost everyone happy. Apologies to El Yanquis de Ciudad Mexico.
  22. The problem with any radical realignment is the abomination known as the DH. West: this one is easy. SEA, Portland, SF, SD, LAA, LAD, ARZ, OAK. done. NorthEast: NYM, NYY, BOS, BAL, PHI, WAS, Montreal - the 8th in my opinion is Pittsburgh, not Toronto, but that could go either way. the real issue is do you split the remaining 16 teams along north/south lines or east/west lines? I'd probably go north/south - Toronto, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinatti, Cubs, White Sox, Twins, Brewers this creates a "fuck you travel" division from 2xFlorida to Atlanta to 2xTexas to Colorado to 2xMissouri. the best bet would be to end Coors field and move them to Nashville or Charlotte. if you swap PiT/TOR, though, you could have 4 NL and 4 AL teams in each division and keep the DH in play for "former AL" home games - everyone would need a DH for 81 games! truly crazy!
  23. Edgy MD wrote: Don't advocate for your team to tank! Advocate for the elimination of the draft and all rewarding-the-loser devices that incentivize tanking! I really don't like the draft, especially in baseball. why can't the teams and the union agree to take the same damn spending limits in place now and just use that as an "amateur signing pool" instead? who loses out there?
  24. yeah, the problem isn't Aoki's presence on the roster - he'd be a great 5th OF for a contender next year - the problem is hia overuse by a team that should be seeing what it has with younger players. this is on Terry.
