  1. =dgwphotography post_id=3503 time=1551291595 user_id=78] 9-3, 2.15 ERA, Tommy John Surgery in July.
  2. I think the Mets' success is likely to have an inverse relationship to Davis' plate appearances - they acquired him as depth - perhaps better depth than has existed the last few years with the "pray for Wright's health" plan, but the less he plays the better an indication it is that 3 of Lowrie/Cano/Conforto/Nimmo are healthy, and someone has managed to nail down FirstBase with offensive production.
  3. I would personally rather have more hitter platoons and less righty/lefty specialist relievers
  4. I really dont like artificially constraining strategy. One answer to the million relievers strategy is for a team to have a smaller staff and tons of pinch hitters. This can be accomplished in part by having a bunch of relievers with options remaining so you can shuttle them to AAA between games
  5. nice 1-man, 4 post IGT - just like the Mets, we're in mid-season form!
  6. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=3326 time=1550932338 user_id=68] =smg58 post_id=3325 time=1550928857 user_id=62] Singling out Jeter for not trying hard enough (or the Wilpons for that matter) overlooks a systemic issue.
  7. ...t certainly makes it hard to find jobs when clubs don't wince at losing 100-plus games with a gaggle of minimum-wage performers. The Miami Marlins lost 98 games last season and in 2019 could have 16 players with less than two years of service time... The biggest problem the players should have is all the teams not trying to win as that suppresses payroll more than anything. The biggest problem is DEREK JETER.
  8. Lefty Specialist wrote: So much is unclear about him. Two outfielders essentially doing the same job, neither getting consistent at-bats, as one would expect McNeil/Nimmo/Conforto against righties. .222/10/30 with 20 SB I'll predict one of them, more likely Broxton, establishes himself and wins the job outright before Memorial Day. .240/.340/.440 with nice defense and 20 steals over 500 PA
  9. Frayed Knot wrote: The White Sox offer reportedly had a bunch of incentives attached which made the guarantee less than $300M but could have pushed it higher depending on how manny thresholds Many hit ... but apparently he wanted the guarantees more which is basically what he said he wanted heading into the off-season. don't understand why a team would expect an incentives-laden contract to entice a guy who gave an interview in the postseason where he said he doesnt hustle
  10. https://twitter.com/JonHeyman/status/1097939532568297472 With Hosmer's contract entrenched at 1B, Myers contract is forced to RF - that leaves only CF/LF for Margot, Reyes, Renfroe - i doubt they are really in on Harper.
  11. Face value would be higher for those 10% of games where they dont end up on sale. But that wasnt my main point. My main point was if ALL the teams heeded the call for "more spending" the Mets wouldn'f get any better
  12. deGrom should switch agencies. Hard to make the argument when he is still working with CAA
  13. Of course if the braves spent more, and the mets spent more and everyone else spent more - every team would be exactly where they are now in terms of wins and talent. But the ticket prices would be higher. The argument for the Mets is that its NY and there shoyld be enough revenue to outspend these other teams, not spend more with them
  14. There are definitely larger issues with the CBA and amateurs. Any union, be it the MLBPA, the NFLPA, or United Auto Workers (UAW) negotiates with management not just on behalf of current employees, but on behalf of potential future employees as well. There is some, but very little, conflict of interest when the UAW negotiates with Ford a deal that says "all new workers get $15/hour next year" because presumably everyone hired subject to those terms will immediately become union members and can vote union leadership out if they feel they have been fucked over. The same is basically true in the NFL. Baseball is a whole different story - the MLBPA agrees to things on behalf of a class of future employees - minor leaguers - who will never actually become members of their union! those that do (future major leaguers) will be incentivized to continue voting for leadership to screw the 85% who never make it out of the minors.
  15. what about other allergies? we can have food-free stadiums that nobody attends!
  16. Edgy MD wrote: 1) There's a much bigger pie than we know about. 2) If Bryce Harper costs $40 million for 6-7.5 wins and Brandon Nimmo costs $1.5 million for 4-5.5 wins, most sensible GMs are going to go with Nimmo and try to use the huge among of savings to make up the difference at other positions. If Brandon Nimmo costs $20 million (or whatever the free market says he's worth, after all those sensible GMs bid him up), the calculation is very different. A bunch of those teams are going to be more interested in Harper. I completely disagree that it would work this way. yes, there are likely far greater profits than the owners are admitting to - a great potential pie. But each team decides how much of that revenue they want to spend and that calculation isnt going to magically change because you want it to. an owner who brings in 500 million with non-salary expenses of 200 million who wants to spend 150 million and profit 150 million is going to continue to do so.
  17. Edgy MD wrote: Release younger players from the bonds of controlled salaries and and sole rights and the older players will be worth more money. Wouldn't they be worth LESS money if the younger players were taking more of the pie?
  18. =smg58 post_id=2728 time=1549898106 user_id=62] His minor league tenure is comparable to Paul Goldschmidt's -- including significant concerns about his defense. Goldschmidt jumped AAA and hit .250/.333/.474 in 177 ABs, before following it with .286/.359/.490 line in his first full season. I'll go in between those numbers: .268/.346/.482 in 500 ABs, with 20 HR and 70 RBI.

    I say we need POLLS!

    FotF

Agreed with G-Fafif, Dickey was the FotF for at least the second half of 2012 until he was traded. people LOVED that guy

I don't think John Franco was the FotF from '91 until Piazza got here. If nothing else, Todd Hundley became the face when he was in the process of setting the catcher homerun record in 1996 and he kept the mantle through 1997 until at least his injury in 1998.
  22. maybe they think BVW will be a net benefit for the players in shaking loose more change from Wilpon's pocket compared to Sandy who was on-board with a cautious approach?
  23. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Bring it on. Between them, us, Atlanta and Washington all going for it it's going to end disappointingly for someone. The 120 Loss Miami Jeters!
  24. Here's my proposal to make baseball better. Get rid of the offseason. After the WS everyone takes a week off. They've earned their rest. Another week for trades, free agency etc. Nov 15 everyone stops fucking around and reports to spring training. Games start January 1. Do it Manfred. As much as I love this idea, there are issues to work through... https://i.pinimg.com/474x/de/27/75/de2775e051f0d595a6cebffde6be8e4c--tiger-stadium-detroit-tigers.jpg>
  25. =seawolf17 post_id=2333 time=1549309586 user_id=91] Both Sunday nights are equally terrible for me, because I'm traveling all week that week in the middle. So whatever works for everyone else is good by me.
