  1. I dont like the black uniforms in and of themselves, but when you picture the somewhat successful Mets teams of the Piazza era, its hard for me NOT to picture them in black.
  2. I am a little disappointed because he is a good player, but not very disapointed because the Mets made a good offer and also because this wasn't as "safe" a signing as Springer or Realmuto would have been.

They don't have a fifth starter, a real centerfielder or a third baseman who can field the position adequately. There are people occupying all of those positions, but..... 3rd Base is an overated need, McNeil would give us above average defense there and Villar would be good at 2nd if we wanted to go that route. Villar is a career 95 OPS+ with speed, nothing amazing but if he upgrades the defense in two spots we could do worse. I think this is the 'real plan' if Davis doesn't hit like he did in 2019
  4. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Let's see... I think they would have retained Stroman and maybe signed McCann. They would have traded Rosario in a lesser deal and put Gimenez at shortstop. Instead of Carrasco and Walker they probably would have added two pitchers the likes of Porcello and Wacha. Matz would probably still have been traded. They probably would have signed relievers other than May and Loup. Matz wouldn't have been available to trade, he would have been non-tendered. The Mets might have traded for Lindor, but Carrasco's salary would have scared them and Matt Allan would be out the door to avoid taking it on. The Wilpons would have privately freaked out when Stroman accepted the qualifying offer and there would have been no further spending. Instead of May/Loup we'd be hearing more planted stories about Betances and Familia looking awesome in training videos. We wouldn't have Villar or Pillar or Almora - we'd have Heredia and maybe rumors of Tebow landing the 5th OF job.
  5. =Centerfield post_id=56782 time=1614117139 user_id=65] I think they are arguing about politics on Twitter and it went bad. Which is surprising because usually talking politics online is so productive. I'm blocked by Stroman, which is odd because I've been very positive about him, and I avoid anything Bauer posts.
  6. =smg58 post_id=56677 time=1614001878 user_id=62] If I'm the manager I'm already calling a moratorium on responding to Bauer in any public way. Take the high ground and focus on baseball. I have to think that putting Bauer and Stroman in the same rotation would have been toxic from day 1. It's possible that Bauer and Syndergaard could have come to an uneasy truce, but even that is not a guarantee. And we're three days into spring training. And there is no way Bauer could avoid (assuming he'd even try) getting in the spotlight of the New York media. It would have been a circus. Hell, it could still be a circus and he is not even here.
  7. =Marshmallowmilkshake post_id=56625 time=1613875885 user_id=119] I'm glad we didn't sign Bauer. The New York media would be constantly be trying to provoke him, and he clearly can't resist taking the bait. It would be one thing after another.
  8. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=56482 time=1613742325 user_id=68] Great. Now the Mets can put out an eight-man rotation. Who needs Bauer?
  9. =seawolf17 post_id=56348 time=1613654354 user_id=91] I am honestly surprised he never made it up to the bigs, even for just a cameo.
  10. =Fman99 post_id=56253 time=1613566446 user_id=86] Cleaning up the last sordid remnants of the Wilporn years.
  11. =Centerfield post_id=55637 time=1612717295 user_id=65] It's interesting to see Sandy in action without the Wilpon influence. I agree with the McCann move, though I would have been fine waiting him out to see if anyone else offered four years. Don't know enough about Trevor May, and love the Lindor trade. I disagree about not matching Toronto for Springer, and I think the whole Bauer thing was nuts. I would have offered Brad Hand three years to get him here. I think he has one more big move left this winter. It would be a disappointment if we ended with Almora and Jake Arrieta.
  12. I like Almora as a 4th/5th outfielder. Its a good chance to take and they didn't give up anything
  13. Dodgers overpaid in every way. So what? You give a shit? This bothers you? It's your money? And how much more money was the Dodgers offer compared to the Mets, anyway? Because the Mets didn't offer to "overpay"? The Mets offered more money and would've made Bauer the highest paid player over the first two years of the contract. Its not my money and wouldnt have bothered me at all. What does bother me is the structure - I would have been fine with 1 year or 3 years but not a series of 1 year opt ins for the player - THAT would have been a bad deal where the Mets get all the risk and none of the reward
  14. Colorado definitely has that Wilponian feeling. Could you imagine the Mets feuding with David Wright and trading him a year after signing his extension, and sending 50 million away with him to boot?? the Rockies just did that. I couldn't even see the Mets in the darkest days of Madoff doing that.
  15. I don't know if Kay should have said anything or not. But to say "how could you not know" when you yourself knew and didn't say anything - well, that is why they didn't know you fucking idiot! because people like you didn't say anything!
  16. Benjamin Grimm wrote: “Mickey Callaway is fungible,” Kay said. “Jared Porter fungible. But what happens when the first big superstar is uncovered to be that guy? Is he fungible? Are they going to force him out of the sport, or is it going to be a simple slap-on-the-wrist suspension? I wonder, because that's going to happen. That's something I've been wondering too. What happens when it's a superstar player with eight years and $250 million left on his contract? What happened to Jose Reyes, who actually BEAT a woman - didnt just send messages?
  17. Did Cohen even lose money here? that wasn't apparent from anything I read. What he DID do was make a massive investment (reportedly 750 million) in one of the firms that DID lose money, so he bought low in them (the losing short-position holder, not gamestop) to the likely benefit of himself and his investors. Why is anyone mad at that? i'd guess half the idiots complaining don't even understand what is going on.
  18. It would be Bauer. At the end of the day, New York is a baseball town.
  19. Keith Law, a smart guy, ranks his Top 100 prospects for 2021. Of note for us: the Mets have 4 players in the list. (I'll get this out of the way--Jared Kelenick is #4). self-professed "smart guy" and very egotistical writer. and he can't help but take his usual dig at the Mets I know it pains Mets fans to read this, but I think Kelenic is going to be a superstar. No such line on other traded top prospects.
  20. Yeah - this is a spot on the 25 freed up - a guy like Matz loses a lot of value when he doesnt have options.
  21. I thought this was going to be a Justin Turner signing thread. damn.
  22. I thought Schilling was a surer HOFer, but hey, if he doesn't want in, screw him. next! Nice to see the underrated Rolen moving up and Andruw Jones had a huge leap in the vote % this year. Next year should be interesting - Alex Rodriguez is a bigger cheater than Bonds/Clemens i that he got caught and suspended after testing started, does he get shunned like Manny Ramirez has? David Ortiz is a shoe-in, right? Mark Texiera should get a long look. a few interesting careers eligible for the first time - Tim Lincecum was amazing for a few years before fallingg apart, Scott Kazmir's name still makes us cringe, Prince Fielder and Jimmy Rollins?
  23. Bauer has TENDED to stick to one-year deals-- presumably, with a higher AAV-- for https://www.redlegnation.com/2020/04/08/reds-pitcher-trevor-bauer-on-why-hes-only-signing-1-year-deals/a few reasons. [bLOCKQUOTE]“I want to be able to be happy playing the game that I love. So I want to end up in situations that make me happy and make me fulfilled. That can be situations like the Reds have, where there's just a really great group of people that just make me fulfilled as a person,” said Bauer. If the quote stopped there it would be great news to the organization, and probably to many fans who would like to see him stick around in the rotation for a while longer. But the quote didn't end there. “That can be situations like jumping into a team that's going to go on a playoff run and hopefully win a World Series. That can be a team that would let me pitch every 4th day or treats me with respect in a way that no other team has. Or whatever the case is – there's certain things that are more important to me than money. And I want to be able to control where I play and when and the situations I'm in so that as I change too, and things become more important to me, or less important to me as I evolve that I can tailor fit my situation to reflect that.” Winning certainly seems important to Bauer, as it is for nearly every high-level athlete. “I want to be on a contender every year because I love competing at the highest level and the highest level is the World Series,” he said. “So I want to have a chance to go to the World Series every single year. And the way baseball is currently structured, there's not many teams that go into spring training trying to win the World Series that year.”[/bLOCKQUOTE] It's quite something to see someone slowly 24-and-1 himself, innit? What exactly is wrong with these quotes? He wants to win, he wants to decide where he works - its not like he agreed to a 5 year deal and then made a stink to get traded (Hi Deshaun!), if he prefers to look for the best deal every year and ignore the injury risk to himself, cool! i'd be much happier if the Mets signed him SHORT term anyway!
  24. The union isnt against the universal DH. They're for it. What they said "no" to was MLB coupling the Universal DH and expanded playoffs together as a trade off - I would say the players correctly perceived the value in expanded playoffs for the owners being much higher than the perceived additional salary of NL DHs
  25. Right. I feel very strongly that with the richest owner in the sport the Mets shouldnt need to be so concerned with overpaying this year or even next year for performance. The bigger concern would be a long term albatross contract.
