    Vote

it would be nice if we could get the same 32 voters as the NL has to compare numbers, if we fall a few short lets give the actual vote, win shares, and a few other things their own "ballot" American League 1. Mauer 2. Jeter 3. Santana 4. Ortiz 5. Morneau 6. Dye 7. Sizemore 8. Guerrero 9. Hafner 10. Thome National League 1. Howard 2. Pujols 3. Beltran 4. Berkman 5. Cabrera 6. Utley 7. Reyes 8. Wright 9. Jones, A. 10. Oswalt
  2. good article. i agree that leaving mauer off should get you the permanent boot, but (what i'm sure was a CHW writer) putting his hometown guy 10th doesnt terribly bother me as long as he was fair at the top (of course he probably had Thomas 2nd too)
  3. Yankee fans will of course cry and whine about it (though if Arod had had exactly the year Jeter had and came in 2nd they'd be saying he's way too high up) i'm not really sure what to think other than being glad that a Yankee didn't win it. i'm more than a bit shocked that Mauer was left out of the top 10 entirely by 3 writers. 7 writers left Santana off entirely, which annoys me even more because the award is for the best player not the best hitter, to leave him off entirely because that doesnt fit your conception of the award is bullshit, if you cant follow the rules give up your ballot (also, if you voted to give Palmiero that GG give up your ballot.) i counted 19 guys under 10 pts in the AL with only 8 in the NL, do the AL writers pimp their hometown guys more? is this just coincidence and different in past years?
  4. Piazza: Blue Jays
  5. metirish wrote: That's pretty funny, even funnier was the contrat Juan turned down from the Tigers....$140 million IIRC... yeah, that might be one of the dumbest moves by a player ever.
  6. Huh. I was going to get back to Woodward and then never did. I'd have never thought he was retiring, though. he's not (at least he hasnt anounced it), that was just a reference to cleonjones being stupid in another thread.
  7. isnt Vargas still looked at as a potential rotation guy down the road?
  8. the franchise records dont realy matter to me because on half the teams in the league he wouldnt have set them, but a silver slugger and gold glove in a middle of the field position for a playoff team should = automatic MVP. i'd have been less annoyed to only lose to one guy like Pujols who arguably was a 1-man show that got his team into the playoffs, but to lose to 3 guys, 2 of whom didnt get into October, is annoying.

    Alou

between Alou and Green i'd guess there will be a MINIMUM of 100 outfield starts to handout to Milledge and/or Chavez, thats plenty.
  10. i think this move could be nice, more to the point thiis is just like the Oliver Perez aquisition, i think Omar has the right ideas when it comes to bringing in hard throwing young pitchers and seeing what pans out.

i like it, but i'm not sure if thats because i would have liked it a week ago or because its not the 2 yeas or 2 + an option that i was dreading. The Mets should start spreading false rumors that they are about to sign guys to an extra year or two, then the fans will like the actual results more.
  12. can we (quickly) replace Casey with Piazza on these things since Casey signed already and Piazza is a person of greater interest to most of us than 1/3rd of the list?
  13. i'm shocked that Beltran faired so poorly.
  14. Casey signed before a few people "predicted" anything by the way.
  15. they all got their OPS above the avg point, thats good. i have a feeling our 2B and C prodution will be below that average OPS mark next year. hopefully reyes doesnt regress too much off this year's huge improvement, delgado, wright, and beltran stay healthy, and we get more out of the outfield corners.
  16. best misleading title yet. beats the "wright traded" one only because i knew before i opened it that it wouldn't be David.
  17. maybe theres someone high up in the Cubs franchise that thinks Soriano can play SS?
  18. they won't let umbrellas in?
  19. obviously we wont know what changes need to be made until we discuss and vote, i'd guess its not going to become any less involved though.

    Alou

I don't worry too much about the dollar sign on 1-year deals, what i worry about is being stuck with an old, injured, overpaid player for more than 1 year. i'd rather have the Mets throw him 11 million for one year than 8 each for 2 with an option for a 3rd. of course i'd just rather they stayed away.
  21. this is proof that steals are STILL way overvalued, it also tells me that defense doesn't matter to GMs signing free agents. Beltran is a far better (and younger) player than Soriano, so how does Soriano get this deal? i'm VERY VERY happy it wasn't us that gave up this disaster contract. a few predictions: 1. The Cubs will regret this contract before opening day 2010. 2. The Cubs will end up paying Soriano to play somewhere else for the last 2 years of the contract. 3. The Cubs won't make the playoffs more than once with Soriano.

if its really a year then thatsfine but 2 years to a guy who is 40 and deems to get hurt all the time is madness.
  23. Torre came in 4th. he received no 1st place votes and only 1 2nd place vote (likely from the NY writer) i see no problem there.
  24. Steve- we are not your psychologists.
