  1. Williams is nice depth, but i sure hope we don't have to see much of him.
  2. I wouldn't mind signing Giles for something like 2 years, $10 million if thats doable... there'd be no promise of a starting job, though if he earned it and got X ABs over the 2 years (or Y in the second year alone) I'd include an automatically vesting 3rd year at $10 million (a nice amount i know but there needs to be an incentive to sign the deal for him)
  3. Were they bidding against the Mets or a Boras-created phantom team?

  5. I fully favor killing the "area out," it is too much of a judgment call. If they are concerned about safety they should worry about the juiced ball and juiced players making life less safe for the pitcher fielding liners back up the middle before they worry about slides. They could also mandate padding on all walls/fences and stop the rule that you are allowed to barrel over the catcher (a rule which does not exist elsewhere.) The area out is like the current strike zone, its not in the rulebook at all and someone needs to either change the rule or start calling it the way its written.
  6. More importantly, nobody can negotiate in bad faith. Sure Seibu wouldn't get $51 million but I'd have to think that after this fiasco thats not happening again anyway. MLB, if Selig has any balls/common sense whatsoever, will sit down and hammer out a better agreement. Will the Japanese league work something better out or will we end up with a situation where Japanese players can't come here until actual free agency? Would MLB disregard Japanese rules altogether if it came to that? Lots of questions, no answers.
  7. well thats certainly true, if you're Boras you are being perfectly reasonable in demanding "market value" for those years after he would be a free agent anyway. If we're talking about a 7 year deal, which considering the whopping size of the fee i'd assume we are, you'd need 5 years of market rate following 2 years of a slight bit more than he'd make staying in Japan... altogether 13-15 a year sounds about right. I think Boston might have some buyer's remorse, assuming this wasn't all a "keep him away from N.Y. ploy" in the first place, and unlike most baseball buyers they have an easy out. I think we all agree the posting system needs to change. My idea for a (simple) change would be to allow the Japanese teams to make a player available to negotiate with everyone, but instead of a posting fee they'd get a % of the contract (agreed upon between them and the player/agent before they posted him) for the number of years that he would have still been under control.
  8. where do you see that? or is this something only visible to admins?
  9. I wouldn't completely eliminate the balk rule, though i'd change it somewhat. I would change the rule so that you no longer need to take a step towards the base before you throw over (this is barely enforced as is, guys like Andy Pettite balk constantly and it is never called), what i would keep is the rule that you have to complete your delivery to the plate once you start it, or rather once you take a step towards the plate.
  10. Hopefully this will all get cleaned up. The problem is that from Boston's point of view they paid for exclusive rights, which means they shouldn't have to pay the guy like a free agent, because he isn't a free agent. Boras seems to think he's entitled to free agent money, Seibu got $51 million out this, shouldn't he get something too? This system benefits Japanese teams at the expense of both Japanese players looking to come to America (who have no bargaining power) AND American teams who, at least in this case, could end up paying more in posting fee + contract than they would have with a regular free agent deal.
  11. Los Mets don't like African Americans or Caucasians, they're looking into trading Wright, Loduca, and Glavine to the Tigers for Pudge and two Argentinians to be named later. sc=very high, incase you couldn't figure it out
  12. Hi guys! I'm the 2006 Mets team! I made it to the LCS, yet people seem more interested in arguing about things that happened before Jose Reyes was alive than they do in ranking me! please discuss me!
  13. http://www.irisharts.org/Images/Seaver.jpgSince wins are a team thing in the first place its pretty hard to say how many wins you should expect/count on out of a pitcher. I'd expect any pitcher with Yankee run support to win 15 games, if he doesn't he's had a bad year. The Royals, on the other hand, would have a hard time making sure Roy Oswalt wins 15, nevermind Gil Meche.
  14. Pettite (34 years old on opening day) 2005- 17-9, 222.3 IP, 171 K, 41bb, 174 ERA+ 2006- 14-13, 214.3 IP, 178 K, 70bb, 108 ERA+ Zito (28yo) 2005- 14-13, 228.3 IP, 171 K, 89bb, 116 ERA+ 2006- 16-10, 221.0 IP, 151 K, 99bb, 116 ERA+ Schmidt (34yo) 2005- 12-7,172.0 IP,165 K, 85bb, 94 ERA+ 2006- 11-9, 213.0 IP,180 K, 80bb, 125 ERA+ Pettite suddenly started walking people last year, though still not at an alarming rate. I think they're all pretty equivalent. If you've gotta sign one of them long term Zito is the obvious choicebecause of age, but for 3 years Schmidt was a steal as was Pettite for 1 + the option. All things considered if I were the Mets I'd have matched the offer to Schmidt or the one to Pettite (though I'd have to think he was only really looking at the Yankees and Astros) and told Boras to run up Zito's price on someone else.
  15. God bless you Turk Wendell (and Marty Cordova too)! I'm glad he didn't get lost in the mountains again...are there mountain lions out there?
  16. a career .241 hitter, not suprisingly his "most similiar" player on baseball-reference.com is our very own Rey Ordonez.
  17. given Drew's alleged statements leading up to it and given my low opinion of Boras (when i picture Boras i picture a lawyer who encourages his clients to take the stand and commit perjury) I am definetaly suspicious. I don't think anything will be proved, but the Dodgers should file a grievance just to make a point.
  18. i doubt he could reinstate the LA contract, he could probably void the BOS one, though i doubt he'd have the balls to do it. is "tanpering" an "offense" that the player would get fined for at all or is it only the tampering club that suffers? Personally I think if there was tampering the club and the agent should be fined.
  19. all the Japanese teams are owned by corporations right? couldn't whoever owns the Seibu Lions, if they wanted to give him a kickback, just "hire" him to make a commercial or billboard advertsing their product?
  20. someone tell us who "won" already!
  21. 5 million for getting busted with roids? i'd have offered him league minimum for 2007 with a $3mil club option for '08.
  22. Rich "freaking" Harden is arguably a better bet going forward than Barry Zito. not that I have any problem with Zito.
  23. Besides Hamilton, who was already mentioned, Josh Phelps was once very highly touted.
  24. agreed, pitching needs to be the focus right now, i like loretta but valentin/loretta in no way makes or breaks the Mets 2007.
  25. iramets wrote: ="Nymr83"] you're an idiot Thanks for that insight into my true nature. I am an idiot, however, with a pretty good memory. I remember fans last spring speaking of Bannister with a lot of admiration for how collected he seemed after having been thrust into the rotation, and how he dealt with some difficult spots. After he got hurt and you had plenty of starting pitching late in the season, not so much. You obviously were one of the few Met fans who didn't appreciate Banister's pitching or his character, and when he was 2-1 with a decent ERA (when he got hurt) you were yelling "Let's lose this bum--what a lousy pitcher he is!" I just didn't hear you at the time, I guess. i have better things to do than rumage through old threads, but i'm sure that even if i was praising the results i was warning of the vast number of walks and pitches. trading bannister was a good example of selling high, something Minaya seems to have a talent for
