  1. Glavine, Maine, Perez, Pelfrey, Heilman, Humber are all guys I'd rather pencil in to my rotation than Bannister. At gunpoint i might rather have el-duque as well.
  2. and Bannister is not Seo or Benson. Bannister is also not the type of pitching we are looking for, we have a half-dozen guys better than him. If we get anyone at all it needs to be a potential top of the rotation guy, Mulder fits the bill if he straightens himself out, a few of those other guys (Weaver, Piniero, Redman for me) are interesting but I'd cringe at giving them more than 1 year plus an option.

    Bye

you can earn a bye a baseball very easily. lockup your division with a week or two to go in the season and rest your starters. and the fans dont even have to wait an extra week, its brilliant really.
  4. if you're the braves, what young centerfielder in the game today would you take back as the major (but not only) part of an andruw jones package? i'm having a hardtime finding a guy. Wily Mo Pena and a decent pitcher maybe? I'm sure they'd take Grady Sizemore, but the Indians probably wouldn't even do that straight up. Curtis Granderson, along with a second player of at least the same caliber? Rocco Baldelli? though what the Rays would want out of it in a 3-way i'm not sure

    Zito Signs

another in a long line of heart-stopping misleading thread titles.
  6. i don't think that idea will really increase revenues enough to make it worthwhile even from a purely economic standpoint. I think the Rockies started the next big thing when they started making different games cost different prices, the Mets caught on pretty quickly and I'm sure other have or soon will, its a pretty good means of upping profits.
  7. ]Try that in another field of journalism. I've said this before in other threads, sports writers get away with more crap than any other journalists. ]The Braves are in full dump mode, trying to get something for Andruw Jones, i don't see a contender with a young centerfuelder to give back that isn't already set in center for years to come, willing to take on the contract ad resign him for at least beltran money, and willing to give the braves a young CFer and more.
  8. it would probably take 2 years of labor strife and drive fans away in droves, hardly a good idea with record profits and attendance.

    Suppan

its been 10 posts since Jeff Suppan was mentioned in the "Suppan" thread
  10. ]McCarthy, 23, who pitched out of the White Sox's bullpen last season, was acquired along with Minor League outfielder David Paisano for Minor League pitchers John Danks, Nick Masset and Jacob Rasner. i've heard of Danks but not these other 2 clowns... could the Mets have had McCarthy for Humber and two nobodies? the papers would have loved cracking headline jokes about his last name all summer...
  11. thanks for the info, i hate paying more than $10 for a ticket so expect to hear about me going to alot of april, may, and september games.
  12. to Baltimore with a shiny 3-year deal unfortunately
  13. ] ...he hurt his knee while catching a fly ball during batting practice at Wrigley Field last April, prompting him to go on the disabled list for the eighth time since he rejoined the Reds... When he came home to Cincinnati in February 2000, he was on pace to break Hank Aaron's home run record of 755; Griffey had been the youngest player to reach the 350-homer mark. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2706196 Thats really all you need to know about Griffey's career path
  14. you left out Bradford who is gone, Burgos will almost assuredly take his place.

    Suppan

at second glance his numbers aren't as bad as i thought, but i'd still never offer him 4 years.
  16. nymr83

    Suppan

if New york has submitted a 4 year offer I hope it is a 4 year offer to serve as the New Orleans pitching coach.

    Suppan

Suppan? no thank you. there are enough unknown young guys on this roster that there is no need to add an unknown old guy, if you can't get Zito or someone of similiar ability just stick with what you have.
  18. They also gave Metropolis some of its own character, so it's more than just New York with a different name, and they briefly mentioned another city called Gotham, i thought Gotham was NYC and Metropolis was always supposed to be somewhere in the midwest, most likely Chicagi?
  19. Wells just turned 28, he has a 112 OPS+ for his 8 year career (3 of which were partial seasons, 1 of those was only a couple of games.) When the Mets signed Beltran he was also 28, he has a 114 OPS+ now, which i assume was a few points lower when he signed (96 and 153 since) after 7 (1 partial) seasons. Beltran is certainly the better baserunner and imo the far better defender (though Wells is good enough in CF.) considering the present market i can't knock them for giving him "Beltran money"
  20. I hope Suppan isn't even on the radar screen.
  21. i'm not saying peralman did the righ thing or the wrong thing here, i'm just saying that i intrpreted that story as "Rocker is a jerk who doesnt care about the kids"
  22. soupcan wrote: It's a big deal that Rocker took some guy's Twisted Sister disc? The way Pealman wrote it it was more like "Rocker took a CD from some poor school with no funding, he spoke for five minutes, didn't write them a check (that was the unwritten but obvious point that i took from it) and left"
  23. Opinion: it shouldn't be the last time, wear the traditional stripes at home and the grays on the road. keep the black uni crap out of the playoffs. Fact: Kaz Ishii was 3-9 with a 5.14 ERA and 1.5 WHIP in 2005, the Mets gave him 16 starts.
  24. For all his accomplishments in Japan (some of which, like 200 pitches on 3 days rest in a high school game might raise concerns) he is still a guy with 0 major league innings under his belt, for that reason alone paying him that much money isn't a decision i'd normally expect to see made but oh well, its not my team's money. As far as the "prisoner's dilemma" goes, I don't really like the analogy here. Also, the article gets part of it WRONG: ]The dilemma resides in the fact that each prisoner has a choice between only two options, but cannot make a good decision without knowing what the other one will do. Even knowing "what the other one will do" does not solve the dilemma. here's an example: -Prisoner A and Prisoner B rob a bank with illegal guns. -robbing a bank carries a 10 year sentence -illegal possession of a gun carries a 3 year sentence -the prosecutor tells them both that if they both confess he will ask that the sentences for the two crimes be served concurrently (combined jail time: 20 years) if one confesses, he will get probation only and the other will serve the two terms consecutively (combined jail time: 13 years) if neither confesses he will nail them with the gun crimes but doesnt have the evidence to convict on the robbery (combined jail time: 6 years) -it is clearly in their combined best interest to both not confess -let's say the prosecutor allows them to talk before making their decisions, and they agree with each other to remain silent -after that discussion here are prisoner A's options: 1. if he believes B will confess, he had best confess himself to serve 10 years instead of 13. 2. if he believes B will not confess, he should still confess himself to serve nothing instead of 3 years. -the same is true for B, and so they will both (if acting rationally) confess despit their assurances to the contrary to each other. This works in a business context as well, most notably with cartels or other horizontal agreements on price or output levels- no matter what you expect the others to do it is always best for you to "cheat" on the agreement
  25. theres alot of interesting names there, i'd want to talk to the agents for Duckworth, Piniero, Williams, Sosa, Werth, Giles, and Tsao. With the exception of Giles i don't think we'd offer any of them an immediate job (Sosa would make the team in the pen i suppose and Werth would probably displace someone as the 5th outfielder) but all would be well worth stashing away as projects at AAA.
