  1. i had no idea that expression was not universal in english-speaking countries.
  2. ]I think (or I like to think) Noble didn't phrase his answer to Adam very clearly because he was tired of spelling things out after the first few letters. he does get to choose which questions he answers, if these were honestly the best of the lot he should make some letters up!

Glory, Terminator, and at least 1 Bond film (Goldfinger would probably be the one) likely belong on the list too.
  4. ]See the preceding response, and remember what you saw when Mike Piazza played first base. First is not an easier position. I'd disagree, Castro (and Piazza) may not be capable of playing 1B credibly, but its still an easier position. the number of major leaguers who would not make a fool of themselves at 1B dwarfs the number that would not look foolish catching. i think the dumbest question belongs to Marty C in Toms River, but only because I assumed Jacob K to either be pulling Noble's leg or to be about 7 years old while Marty C meant his dumb question seriously.

i'd complain that the top of the list has too much of an bias towards old movies, not that there are too many newer ones. i've seen ~25 movies on the list. As far as the ones post-1987 that someone mentioned, i'd say Schindler's List is about where it should be. The rest are lower than they should be and I'd bet an old guy (or group of old guys) wrote the list. Toy Story and Snow White look to me like the only cartoons on the list? how about Lion King? Aladdin? one notable omission i think (or an omission on my part if i didnt see it there) is BACK TO THE FUTURE! 12 Angry Men sucked big time, so did Forrest Gump, and Lord of the Rings may have been a great trio of books but I didn't think the movies were anything that special. I won't bother with a top 100, but heres my own top 10, several of which are not movies i'd expect to appear on any list since they are certainly "niche" movies: E.T. Schindler's List The Hunt for Red October The Final Countdown Field of Dreams Star Trek IV The Sixth Sense The Shawshank Redemption Goodfellas Back to the Future
  6. i'd rather have Alou, he's much better when healthy, its really unfortunate that Chavez got hurt when he did because he was an adequate replacement.
  7. Rockin' Doc wrote: Should A-Rod elect to opt out of the last 3 years of his contract, I suspect he would most likely end up back with the Yankees. If there is a team capable of and willing to put up $30 Million/year for 3-4 years for A-Rod I suspect it is indeed the Yankees. To retain Rodriguez in such a scenario, would cost Steinbrenner far more money than any increase in salary he might agree to, because Hicks and the Rangers would be off the hook for their share of the remaining contract A-Rod elected to give up. thats why i dont think he'll be a yankee next year unless they work something out before he opts out. once he opts out the yankees are going to feel pretty stupid giving him what might amount to a 10 million per year raise (taking into account what Texas is no longer paying) while also adding a year or 2.
  8. who is who? are we going by preseason roles or who i'd NOW consider he top starter?
  9. apparently its barely a question at all.
  10. DocTee wrote: Another HoF OF who had a good/great, but limited run: tonight's honoree, Ralph Kiner. Kiner's OPS+ was 29 points higher placing him 40th on the career list (Ichiro is something like 350th.)
  11. Rockin' Doc wrote: A typical season for Ichiro produces the following line: Games 159 Hits 230 Avg .332 OBP .378 SLG .439 OPS .817 SB 40 with 81% success rate for his career Throw in Gold Glove defense and a strong arm that few will challenge and he is well on his way to a Hall of Fame career. He shows no signs of slowing down and his base stealing has dramatically improved the past few seasons. There are many more dubious contracts out there than this extension represents. i'm not arguing about the contract, but those numbers are NOT hall-worthy coming from an outfielder in only 7 seasons, and they wouldn't be in 10 seasons either... he's not great enough to get into the hall on a 10 year career, he needs some longevity, we'll see how long he lasts. he has the same career OPS+ as both Shawn Green and Cliff Floyd (as well as Paul O'Neil and Ruisty Greer) now he's a better defender than any of those guys, but they've all got longevity on him. O'neil also has 5 rings for 2 franchises and nice postseason stats including 39 homers in only 299 ABs.
  12. DocTee wrote: In addition to the HoF debate... when the M's retire #51, do they do so in honor of Ichiro, or the Big Unit? Johnson was there 8 full years and 2 partial ones, he won 4 CY Youngs in a row for the D-backs, only one witj Seattle, he had 2-4 "dominant" years in Seattle, i don't think that merits number retirement. i am probably alot stricter than most, i'd only retire a number if a guy's numbers for that team (not taking into account what he did before he came or after he left) by themselves make him at least worthy of serious hall of fame discussion if not entry. ichiro you cant retire after 7 years but once he's played out the 5 year deal he'll have spent 12 full seasons there as compared to randy's 8 + 2 halves. if you're retiring one or the other its certainly ichiro.
  13. Johnny Dickshot wrote: He's probably a Hall of Famer right now, and Shirley oughta be one in 5 years he's actually 3 seasons short of the required 10. 3 more years of career-level production doesnt make him a HOFer to me. a 120 OPS+ from an outfielder and a short career can't make the HOF in my book. i don't care what he did in japan, theres a place for "ambassadors" of the game and that kinda stuff but its not the players ballot and thats what i assume we're talking about. look at the 11-year career of Albert Belle, he was twice the hitter the Ichiro is. Jim Rice was somewhat better and he played 16 years. Ichiro just doesnt cut it as a HOF outfielder.
  14. i picked "indifferent" because as i explained in the other thread i like it at Shea but don't want to see it migrate to the new place.
  15. i dont know, but the florida guy publicly criticized them which is pretty rare i think
  16. leaving aside his obvious racism, how can he admit to taking the cream and then saying he never used steroids? its a steroid whether you like it or not gary. i wouldnt believe him if he said "i never knowingly took steroids" either, but at least then he wouldnt be contradicting his own statements.
  17. one of the leading idiots in today's game is Gary Sheffield.
  18. crap. get Maine out of there. worst start as a Met?
  19. reportedly 5 years, 90 million. he'll be 39 when it ends. wow. Florida president publicly criticized the Mariners for making this deal (but who cares what FLA thinks anyway, they've proven they dont care about winning by breaking up 2 WS teams) i think its a bit much given his age and lack of power, but its far from the worst deal i've seen lately (hello, gil meche)
  20. someone make this a poll
  21. the opportunity to make fun of their broken-down dump (which, by the way, is not really the same stadium where all the yankee greats played) was well worth having them here for a week.
  22. I like the apple at Shea, but i think of it as part of the ballpark not the team, it should be left out of citi field, let the place develop its own character. remember when Daryl Strawberry homered as a Yankee (was it against the Mets or was it when the roof fell down at their place?) and the apple went halfway up then down?
  23. bad job only scoring 1 and stranding 2 there by the Mets, gotta take the comeback opportunity!
  24. thanks metirish nice to start the 2nd half with a W, though again the offense scored a couple and then sat back on their asses hoping it would be enough, maybe thats just my perception ofthings but they seem to do that alot.
  25. Gotay drives in Milledge, who scored all the way from 1st on a single (he was running on the pitch)
