Yes, you wrote that no team would allow any pitcher to do this, but they regularly do it already, in six or seven different fall and winter leagues.

Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Stro is on team Puerto Rico after previously repping the USA Which really adds to the sense that eligibility for these teams is a bit of a joke to avoid the fact that not many nations really play baseball at a serious level - we need a U.S. territory to fill out one of the teams and anyone who has ever attended a bar mitzvah can play on another one.
  3. i dont think there should be any hurry to name a closer, just let Buck use who he wants to use when he wants to use them
  4. =Centerfield post_id=119932 time=1678990628 user_id=65] Have no issue with players wanting to represent their country. It's just idiotic that they would hold this tournament before the season. And I realize that there's no good time to have an injury that takes 8 months to heal, but at least you take out some of the risk if you have it in winter.
  5. Finally watched it on my phone on a recent flight - eh. i mean, normally i hope the movie i'm watching lasts until we land but in this case i was itching to get back to my book instead. the plot holes still make no sense.
  6. The Mets will win the 2023 world series, and Quintana will be the answer to a trivia question many years from now about a 2024 Met who was on the Mets DL and never played for the 2023 champs.
  7. The Hot Corner wrote: the Dodgers released him, which was of course the proper decision. Unfortunately, Trevor "I assault women" Bauer will still get payed $22.5 mil. for 2023. If another team decides to sign the low life to a league minimum deal, the Dodger save a whopping $750K. Either way, the low life still makes $22.5 Mil. this year. Oh no, he will in fact make 26.5 million this year, because his agent must have realized that there is no offset if he gets that 4 million from a Japanese baseball team. Sayonora!
  8. Angel Hernandez may be the worst umpire in MLB, but he may not be the worst umpire anywhere? Check out the last two strikes in this college game. holy shit.
  9. A Boy Named Seo wrote: Could be. I might guess a union would tell him to keep his yap shut until investigations are done, but failure to appear would seem like bad advice wherever it came from? Next court date is April 14 with a AAA Syracuse game scheduled a couple hours away in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Don't skip court for BP, Khalil. I suppose we'll know where the bad advise/idea came from when we see if there is a new attorney on April 14th. "oh yeah go skip the appearance to play baseball, let the judge know you are a stereotypical athlete who thinks you are too good for the rules, I'll cover for you bro!" doesn't sound like great legal advise.
  10. I predict exactly zero major league pitchers would participate in an event that forces them to ramp up in January to dormant again and ramp up in March.
  11. =kcmets post_id=119078 time=1677713432 user_id=53] This thing doesn't start for another week? What are they waiting for?
  12. I guess the Rangers pulled a Lou Cabrazzi on deGrom, took a gun to his head and told him that either his signature or the blood from his brains was gonna be on that contract. That's what I'm gonna believe until deGrom answers the fucking questions that no journalists are even bothering to ask. Why didn't deGrom get back to the Mets? (Because he didnt want to.Because he didn't want to play for the Mets any more.) There are plenty of reasonable explanations for why deGrom didn't get back to the Mets (assuming that is even true) and for why he isn't commenting now. The most plausible to me is that he had already discussed the general framework of a deal with the Mets and knew that the Rangers offer was far beyond where the Mets were willing to go. Remember, Cohen's wallet may be bottomless but the Mets - the same team that ripped up an agreement with Correa over medicals - know a lot more about deGrom's health than the Rangers do. Its also possible the Rangers said "hey, you've been talking to us for a month and the Mets for three years now - are you signing this, or are we moving on?" he wouldn't want to call his new employer out now if that was the case. He also has no reason to burn bridges now. As long as he avoids doing so, he has a lifetime of old timers days, celebratory jersey retirements, first pitches, overpaid spring training "advisor" roles, and maybe even pitching coach gigs to look forward to in New York. Silence is his friend.
  13. Happy to see him sign in Sam Diego. If Cohen is Boras' new BFF then the Sam Diego ownership is Tony Clark's - so much for the smaller markets not being able to spend.
  14. I like the concept of a pitch clock, just not the part where it has an effect on the outcome of games. Perhaps instead of an in-game penalty they should just have fines. Every violation is a fine. At the end of the season, they collect and the fines money and divide it up amongst all the players, so overall player compensation isn't down and the guys who don't violate the clock too much actually end up ahead.
  15. Well, MLB wanted this and we didn't have to wait long - today's Braves/Red Sox game ended on a pitch clock violation - a strikeout when the batter wasn't "set" with 8 seconds left. LOL
  16. Maybe they did take a poll. The rule changes sound exactly like what people responding to a random surveymonkey poll would think are good changes, as opposed to what people attending or watching games think.
  17. Edgy MD wrote: As Darin Ruf was the upgrade-that-was-actually-a-downgrade for J.D. Davis at the 2023 deadline, it's questionable whether Tyler Naquin was any kind of an upgrade himself over Dom Smith. Naquin's tenure, unlike Ruf's, dissolved into free agency at the end of the season, and now he finally has a nu employer, joining the Milwaukee Brewers on a minor league deal. The inkage leaves Terrance Gore as the last standing of the 2022 Mets' impressively sized MLB free agent class. Well, his 80 OPS+ was a huge improvement on Smith's 61 in a similar number of PAs! He was also a better defensive fit for the positions the Mets needed. So, I would say he did in fact clear the incredibly low bar of "better than Dom Smith" Gore seems like the type who should rest his legs and sign on with a contender in June
  18. and whose fault is that? Manfred's maybe. not ours!
  19. Definitely true. They cut off beer sales in the 8th inning (in most places i think?) they can't turn them back on for extra innings and there is probably a scheduled shutdown of all the other food stands by inning. they are only losing money after 9.
  20. Jay Horwitz is press officer for Team Israel. https://metsinsider.mlblogs.com/team-israel-underdogs-of-the-wbc-c8246f6f3267https://metsinsider.mlblogs.com/team-israel-underdogs-of-the-wbc-c8246f6f3267 When Israel had a baseball league for a year (it actually lasted ONE year) Art Shamsky was a manager and his team's colors were blue an orange while playing for a city (Modi'in) that is pretty well known as as being an American ex-pat community. Annecodotally, I know at least one Mets fan there!
  21. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=118721 time=1677103161 user_id=68] =metirish post_id=118718 time=1677102361 user_id=72] What is Matt Harvey doing with Italy ? Coaching staff ?
  22. Is suing the Mets, claiming he was not retained as pitching coach in 2019 because of age discrimination. Gonna be tough to prove, though I suppose if anyone is dumb enough to leave a paper trail, it would be The Wilpons.
  23. Edgy MD wrote: The ringeriest team continues to be Israel, for whom 33 of 35 players are US-born, including the returning Ty Kelly. The Israeli professional baseball league went out of business in about 5 minutes, and before they could send me the hat I ordered.
  24. [Warning: paywall] https://theathletic.com/4234695/2023/02/21/mets-payroll-projection-2023/https://theathletic.com/4234695/2023/02/21/mets-payroll-projection-2023/ I found this tidbit particularly interesting and a nice fuck you to all the whiners about Cohen - especially the hypocritical yankees fans (you know you know one) with the nerve to complain ...the Mets' player payroll ... is 28 percent higher than the second-highest payroll, that of the Yankees. On a relative basis, that's the biggest gap between No. 1 and No. 2 since … 2021, when the Dodgers' payroll was 28 percent higher than the second-place Yankees. ... The Mets are still not outspending the league at the same rate the Yankees did in the aughts. Let's look at some historical payroll numbers courtesy of the Associated Press. From 2003 to 2010, the Yankees spent at least 30 percent more than any other major-league team, topping out in 2005 when they spent 69 percent more than any other team. The Yankees had the highest payroll in the game for 15 consecutive years (1999 through 2013), and in 11 of those seasons their payroll was more than double the league average and the league median. (In 2005, it was triple the league median.)
