  1. I'm sad that RA Dickey dropped off the ballot
  2. Juan Samuel was an average at best player who had one good year. Lenny Dykstra was a fucking headcase who was clearly the better player at all times throughout their careers, unless you squinted really hard after the 1987 season, when maybe they looked about the same. The Mets seemingly made the decision that Dykstra had to go, and Samuel was the best they could get in return.
  3. The Mets have done enough this offseason that I'm not crushed. let;s win it all anyway!
  4. At this point I'll believe it when there is a press conference
  5. Stephen Drew I think took a 1 year deal not until the season started after Boras overplayed his hand trying to get him the big contract. and he never got paid big after that. there may have been others.
  6. =kcmets post_id=116166 time=1672948084 user_id=53]Needs mustard.
  7. Jeff McNeil's skill set feels like an even more improbably success story. Of course, in round 12 who the heck cares, you can take a guess at that point and there is very little downside to being wrong.
  8. Edgy MD wrote: I don't know anybody projected to hit 40 homeruns in the big leagues at 18, but yes, he was projected to develop power, by both the Mets and outside rankers. I mean, look at him. He's got the strength, he's got the swing, and he's got the bat speed. And he has shown what he can do, power-wise, if not consistency-wise. I think if you review reports from the time, you'd generally see a 65 rating for his power potential. Here is baseball prospectus from august 2014: https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_bat.php?reportid=177https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_bat.php?reportid=177 Flashes above-average raw power in BP; linear swing path lacks much lift at present, leading to abundant topspin in games; whip-like bat speed through the zone; player shows ability to get the barrel to the baseball on a consistent basis, but a lack of leverage, an out-of-sync lower half, and a contact-heavy approach limits the over-the-fence pop at present; thick/strong lower half bodes well for potential power output in theory; needs plenty of mechanical adjustments and approach alterations, but player flashes the necessary ingredients to accumulate average power production in the form of doubles and mid-teens home run output. the bold is mine. they gave him a "50" future power grade. the overall report certainly doesnt read "1st rounder" to me.
  9. Frayed Knot wrote: Back to the subject at hand, Ken Rosenthal apparently told a podcast connected to The Athletic that a NYM/Carlos Correa contract could look "dramatically different" than the announced original. And every article about the Correa situation I've read since then cites that one Rosenthal piece. 1) I would expect the new contract wouldn't be a straight payout given that past injury, so it would be different. It is a d'oh conclusion. 2) How about other reporters getting off their collective lazy arses and uncovering new details for info to pass along to us? He concludes his article by saying that once the Corrrea deal is complete, the Mets will make other deals. 1) Fairly logical - they have other holes to fill. 2) if he knows something for sure, who are the players involved? In both cases, I'm starting to get the feeling that Rosenthal is less a reporter with insight than he is Captain Obvious. OE: Maybe I'm just frustrated there is no new off-season news. Later Jim Bowden wrote an article about what all 30 clubs are telling him/ what he is hearing off the record and he says the Mets are likely to pursue a 4th outfielder
  10. I admit i have no idea who this is.
  11. Edgy MD wrote: Nobody has 40-homer power coming out of high school, though. You do your best to make projections, it works out for five to seven teams, and everybody else chalks it off to experience. The first 30 picks that year were pretty much Kris Bryant and everybody else. Aaron Judge went with a supplemental pick between rounds. Hunter Renfroe, JP Crawford, and Tim Anderson went within 6 picks after Smith. They've all produced 10+ WAR - none are great hitters, but its a different baseline when you produce defensive value. Smith was not PROJECTED to have that power either from what I recall.
  12. =whippoorwill post_id=116075 time=1672871260 user_id=79] When I think of pretzels I think of Philly Maybe Edgy's telling us correa's going to Philly
  13. I was going to say Randy Johnson but i have a hard time beliebing he hit 9 homers even in little league
  14. mostly disappointing tenure for a guy who was probably drafted too highly given the position he plays. too much has to go right for a first baseman who doesn't have 40 homer power to become worth a 1st round pick.
  15. those are the two classic street cart foods, at least in my mind
  16. a painting that expensive probably has its own pair of $75,000/year armed guards who each stand next to it in 12 hour shifts, just far enough away that they aren't obstructing Steve's staring at it. But then, it might not even be the most expensive one he owns? And this is why our payroll is monopoly money.
  17. Well-respected crew chiefs Ted Barrett, Greg Gibson, Tom Hallion, Sam Holbrook, Jerry Meals, Jim Reynolds and Bill Welke are among the group to hang up their chest protectors, while Marty Foster, Paul Nauert and Tim Timmons will join them in retirement. None of those names stand out to me, which for an umpire probably means he was doing a good job!
  18. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I hope they replace each of the retiring umpires with a lord-a-leaping. I hope they replace them with an automatic strikezone.
  19. =Marshmallowmilkshake post_id=115637 time=1672191993 user_id=119] I was a subscriber. But after the sale to the Times I thought the quality and the quantity of Mets stories dropped significantly and I canceled.
  20. A Boy Named Seo wrote: This thread was tough to revisit. The video where Bauer tries to explain everything away is nauseating. Glad it sounds like the Dodgers will move swiftly on from him. I don't want to see his ass on my TV this year, or ever again TBH. And I can't imagine any woman who's been hit by a man would either. ~~~ Also, I hope LFWS and Seawolf get over their hiatuses soon. If we're making a wish list I want Vic Sage back to discuss the Knicks. Bauer claims everything that happened was consensual. There have been past abusers of women - Jose Reyes in particular - who had no such defense. Why is it that only Bauer seems to get the "I never even want to see him again treatment"? Did ANYONE say that about Reyes when the Mets brought him back?
  21. Benjamin Grimm wrote: =nymr83 post_id=115400 time=1671773092 user_id=54] I wonder which team will decide the talent is worth the baggage? Would we be all that surprised if it turned out to be the Mets?
  22. The Dodgers can afford to eat that both financially and as far as losing his talent. I wonder which team will decide the talent is worth the baggage?
  23. Holy shit indeed.
  24. Edgy MD wrote: With the Padres reeling in Seth Lugo, it's seeming like a real meaningful chance that the Mets could open the season with no home-grown players on the entire pitching staff. I expect one of Megill or Petesron is the "long man" to start the season, with the other stretched out as a starter at AAA, unless an injury pushes one into the MLB rotation.
  25. ABNS is right, that is the Dodgers' plan and it has worked for them. It sounds like that is Steve's plan too. The question will be, if draft/develop doesn't work out, will he just keep spending? It'll be awhile before we know that.
