  1. Willie Mays.
  2. I had been thinking he'd find a spot on the roster, but the additions of Capuano and Bucholtz seem to make that less likely. I suspect he'll end up being offered back to the Orioles at the end of spring training.
  3. I was away on vacation with my family. I would keep checking newspaper box scores to see if Kingman had homered, but after a while he stopped even appearing in the boxes, and I had no idea why. It wasn't until I returned home to New York that I learned about his injury. (I assumed he had been injured, of course, but I had no idea of the severity or how long he was expected to be out.)
  4. It sure does. I expect he'll land safely in Buffalo. As for the two new guys, they both come, alphabetically, shortly after Jason Bay, so we'll soon have threads in which to discuss, in depth, our Expectations for them.
  5. More Mets games than Tom Seaver. You don't see that every day. (Unless, that is, you make a daily habit of looking at John Franco's or Pedro Feliciano's stats.) Feliciano was the one Mets autograph my daughter ever got, and now he's a Yankee. She's not at all pleased. She's talking about throwing away the cap he autographed, but I'm trying to get her to see that he was a Met when he signed it, and once he's done being a Yankee his Metliness will be restored.

  7. Isn't that strange? Is there anyone who doesn't think that "strikeouts, shutouts, complete games, longevity and durability" are good things? I'm not at all convinced that Blyleven, Niekro, and Sutton belong in the Hall of Fame (if it were up to me, the Hall would be very exclusive) but I definitely want guys on my pitching staff who provide strikeouts, shutouts, complete games, longevity and durability.
  8. Rumor has it that Beltran would prefer to play in Beirut.
  9. I'll say about 25 home runs, and 90 runs batted in.
  10. Put me down for a full year at Buffalo, with the exception of one or two brief stints with the Mets when somebody else is on the DL. I say he'll appear in 5 games for the Mets.
  11. Being a year older isn't always a bad thing. It's probably a good thing fo players like Ike Davis and Josh Thole, for example. I think Bay will be better. I think second base and catcher will be more productive, though perhaps not by a whole lot. I think we'll stay the same at third base, shortstop, and wherever Pagan plays. Beltran... who knows? I expect the real decline to be in the starting rotation.
  12. Yeah, I think they'll get about 80 to 82 wins. I agree with part about the fourth place.
  13. I didn't say it would be good, but that it would be funny. (Maybe ironic would be a better word? Fans of each team would have to start rooting for the shortstop they loved to hate. Philadelphia fans, of course, can root for Michael Vick, so they can root for anybody.)
  14. I don't want this to happen, at all, but it would be pretty funny if in 2012, Rollins was a Met and Reyes a Phillie.
  15. I received an e-mail today from somebody looking for photos of a relative who played briefly for the Kingsport Mets. I didn't have what she was looking for and (lamely) suggested she contact the Kingsport club to see if they have an archive of photos that they'd be willing to share. My suspicion (which I shared with her) was that these minor league clubs are not great custodians of their histories. (Can anybody confirm or deny this?) But since I was curious, I went to the Kingsport Mets website to see a listing of their personnel. Kingsport About page Take a look at the name of the first of the two interns.
  16. I think that Hu is simply here to contend for the role that Alex Cora filled the past couple of years.
  17. Yeah, I don't see Hu's arrival as an option that would lead to Reyes' departure. Not on a team that has plans to contend at least eventually.
  18. You know, I think there are a lot more reasons to be optimistic about 2011 than there were in 1980. I know that's not saying much at all, but at least this is a "bad" Mets team that really can turn out to be good. (With some good breaks and a lack of bad ones, except in Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Miami.)
  19. Those are the games that weren't played in the month that's being displayed. They're shaded grey for road games and that dark tan color for home games. At times I've toyed with the idea of tracking promotional events (at least, as scheduled) in the UMDB as well as ticket prices. I'll probably get to both some day. I have most of the yearbooks from the past and can probably get some help here for the few I'm missing. And Michigan, my guess is that it was the end of scheduled doubleheaders that killed Banner Day. Though I wouldn't be surprised if the new WFAN-inspired mentality caused banners to be more angst-ridden and less optimistic, which would have spoiled a lot of the fun.

  21. I don't know about that, there may be room for both Hu and Emaus. My guess is that the Mets will carry 6 infielders. (12 pitchers, 2 catchers, and 5 outfielders) The six could end up being Wright, Reyes, Davis, Murphy, Hu, and Emaus.
  22. The first thing I noticed was the incorrect script M on the uniform. Maybe they intended to say "New Mets", like Carlos Beltran would 25 years later.
  23. If you care to assemble a list, I'll see what I can do to get them in. In the meantime, here's something you can all take a look at, if you'd like: http://www.leaptoad.com/mets/allgames.php It's all the scorecards from 1962 to 2010 as generated by the UMDB data and the script that I wrote. I'm sure there are some quirks and anomalies. If you'd like to explore, and point out things that don't seem to look right, I'd appreciate it. I may not ever be able to get everything perfect, but I'd like to eliminate anything that's too glaring if I can. At some point before long I'll reveal these scorecards to the world at large. (Not that they can't get to them from here, but you know what I mean.)
  24. You mean, like Kevin Burkhardt? I hadn't thought about it, but it wouldn't be inappropriate. Does anyone here have access to a complete (or almost complete) list?
