  1. The Daily News today says the Mets are considering letting Carrasco audition for a spot in the starting rotation this spring.
  2. Sean Green is apparently a Brewer.
  3. This wasn't very encouraging, given that we'll probably be asking a lot of him in 2011. Hopefully the scouts are wrong. 18. Dillon Gee, RHP: This gutsy battler has consistently put up numbers, but scouts doubt it will play in the big leagues.
  4. This game is being discussed in another thread. Among the latest changes: the red text indicating when a new pitcher takes the mound.

  6. Former NL MVP Cavarretta dies at 94 Three-time All-Star led Cubs to 1945 World Series appearance Former Major Leaguer Phil Cavarretta, who won the 1945 National League Most Valuable Player Award while leading the Cubs to their last World Series appearance, died on Friday. He was 94. Cavarretta died in Lilburn, Ga., of complications from a stroke, his grandson, Jeffrey Brown, told The Associated Press. He told the AP in a phone interview that Cavaretta, who had been battling leukemia and suffered the stroke several days ago, died in a hospice care center. Cavarretta played in the Majors for 22 seasons from 1934-55 with 20 of those years coming with the Cubs before playing for the cross-town White Sox in his final two seasons. A three-time All-Star, his best season came in '45 when he led the NL with a .355 batting average and a .449 on-base percentage. He also helped lead the Cubs to the World Series that season but they lost to the Tigers in seven games. Cavarretta, a first baseman and outfielder, finished his career with a .293 batting average, 95 home runs and 920 RBIs in 2,030 games. Also... a former Mets coach.
  7. I've seen the rumors about the Mets getting Gorzelanny, but nothing about who they might give up. What are the Cubs looking for this winter?
  8. Wait... does that mean he's not gonna be a free agent next year? I didn't know that was possible!
  9. He was a pinch-hitter for the pitcher. I'm not listing the pitchers who never had a plate appearance for the sake of space, but I may reconsider that if it's confusing, and apparently it is. (Maybe I can print them in a smaller font.)
  10. Latest update:
  11. I wonder if any other teams have a Tom Gorzelanny that they'd consider trading?
  12. I see it a lot when I'm in Europe, not so much in the USA. But the Fanta Girls were pretty happening.
  13. I conflate Fresca and Fanta.
  14. "If the Mets logo were to appear on your favorite brand of bread, how would it affect your purchase? " If it's my favorite brand of bread, I'm gonna buy it whether or not there's a Mets logo on it.

  16. Mookie should totally wear number 1. I don't like seeing him in 51, just like I didn't like seeing Bud Harrelson in 53.
  17. I think that was one of the first books I ever read about the Mets. Actually, I think I had read some of those 1962-1969 histories that came out after the Mets won the World Series. I should probably say that that was the first contemporary book I read about the Mets. (I know... a book published in 1969 was hardly ancient in 1972, but from the perspective of a nine-year-old, 1969 was another era.) I remember thinking it was really cool to be able to read about the current Mets in a book. I haven't read "The Wrong Season" since I was in elementary school. I should definitely try to track down a copy.

I can post a scorecard (imperfect as it currently is) for every regular season game from 1962 through 2010. I'm going to refine the look (as mentioned above, it's not yet where I want it to be), get the postseason games in there too, and then make the nearly 8000 scorecards available to the world. I'm even thinking of making the background color vary; the longer ago that the game was played the more yellowed it would be.

I'm not saying it's true that he wouldn't be able to "handle" New York, but he does have a diagnosed anxiety disorder, and it seems to be a commonly held opinion that Greinke needs to stay in a smaller market.
  21. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I know everyone has their own scorecard style, but I'm having some trouble with this one. For example. Strawberry in the 4th: Does 5 /FL indicate he flied out to the third baseman? And Backman in the 19th S/BG? I guess that means single, then, what? Or does the slash indicate a later event? I would also use the diamond in the middle to indicate the bases advanced, then blacken the thing if/when that runner scores. I'm also wondering if there's a reason the results are packed into the upper-left quadrants Still a work in progress. I've been focusing on the overall layout. I'll soon be turning my attention to the things you mentioned: I'll be making the event descriptions less obscure, and I'll be using the central diamond. Stay tuned!
  22. Weird thing going on with Cedeo's name there.
  23. Wow! I think he has to explain the hat before he explains the tracksuit!
  24. I was at two of those games! Game 4, 1969 World Series The Fourth and Fifth of July, 1985 Game 6, 1986 NLCS Game 6, 1986 World Series Game 4, 1988 NLCS Game 5, 1999 NLCS Game 7, 2006 NLCS And I watched all of the others (except for the 1969 game) on television, and have vivid memories of them.
