  1. That $5 million figure is just speculative. Sandy told Kevin on Mets Hot Stove last night that there's no firm budget number. They may have to go to 7 or 8 million to fill all the positions they have open.
  2. They could be called the Coyote Skinners.
  3. David Waldstein, N.Y. Times wrote: The Mets also spoke to Alan Hendricks, the agent for the right-handed reliever Chad Qualls, on Tuesday afternoon, thinking he could be an underpriced option who could flourish at Citi Field. He'd be the first Met with a last name beginning with the letter Q!
  4. If handshake agreements have gone out of style, I'm sure it's largely because too many people failed to honor them.
  5. Peter Gammons (remember him?) says that the Mets and Red Sox are discussing Beltran. NESN.com wrote: Gammons speculated that the Mets would be willing to pay up to $10 million of Beltran's $18.5 million salary but may want Daisuke Matsuzaka or Marco Scutaro in return. Gammons added that it's unlikely the Sox would give up either player.
  6. Didn't Don Long's name come up in the Clarence Thomas hearings way back when?
  7. This is what happened the last time somebody created a thread about the Pirates. I hope this one stays on topic!
  8. This reminds me of a thread I steered off course at one point... Let me see if I can find it.
  9. Let's hope they bring back Mackey Shillstone.
  10. Matthew Cerone wrote: Matt Pignataro of 7 Train to Shea says the Mets interested in signing RHP Dan Wheeler, according to sources. Wheeler had two saves in three chances and 3.35 ERA in 64 appearances for the Rays last season, during which left-handed batters hit .154 against him. He has a terrific slider, which is perfect in relief and crushes left-handed hitters. Hes the perfect set-up man. Wheeler is a Type A free agent, but was not offered salary arbitration, so his new team will not need to surrender a compensatory draft pick. Nevertheless, I still see no way the Mets allocate roughly $4 million for a set-up guy, let alone give a two-year deal, considering they were unwilling to do so for Takahashi. That said, he certainly describes the right-hander who can retire left-handed batters, which I wrote about this morning. The Mets traded Wheeler to the Astros in 2004 to clear a spot on their roster for RHP Jae Seo, who had been promoted from Triple-A for a spot start.
  11. As far as I'm concerned, if he's good at what he does, then he's more than welcome.
  12. He's only insufferable if you waste time listening to him.
  13. I just read the following on NBCSports.com: Its possible that the two sides do in fact have an agreement, but the Red Sox will wait until April to announce it in order to stay out of the luxury tax for 2011. I can't imagine that's true. That would mean that Gonzalez spends spring training with the Padres while all along he's been secretly traded to Boston?
  14. TiVoed this movie just the other day. Hope to watch it in the next couple of weeks. I remember liking the movie, and the book, a lot.
  15. Ron Hunt?
  16. Word is that the Mets let him go because they wanted to open a space on the 40-man roster. Maybe that means they have somebody in particular that they like better who's going to take that spot. Who knows?
  17. Well, the Mets will be auditioning lefty relievers in St. Lucie, so they might as well give a chance to the guy to whom they owe $12 million. With intra-squad games and split-squad games, there are plenty of innings to go around.
  18. I really wonder if Joe the Sketchpad guy really wants to see Jeter as a Met, or if he was just urinating.
  19. I was at that game! It was my second (and final) visit to Yankee Stadium.
  20. Anthony DiComo / MLB.com wrote: NEW YORK -- The Mets have re-signed left-handed pitcher Mike O'Connor to a Minor League contract and invited him to big league camp, the team announced on Tuesday. O'Connor, 30, struck out 70 batters and walked just 17 in 70 2/3 innings for Triple-A Buffalo last season, posting a 2.67 ERA. He appeared in the Major Leagues for the Nationals in 2006 as a starter and again two years later, predominantly as a reliever. The Mets originally signed him as a Minor League free agent last winter. Given the current flux of New York's bullpen, O'Connor has a strong chance to make the team out of camp. The departure of Hisanori Takahashi and the possible departure of Pedro Feliciano leaves the Mets with only two left-handed relievers on the 40-man roster: Oliver Perez and Pat Misch, neither of whom have experienced much recent success in the Majors. O'Connor, who has a career 3.90 ERA in the Minors, could become a cheap replacement for Takahashi and Feliciano in the bullpen.
  21. Bill from Boston asks about Justin Turner...
  22. Willie on the left, Lino on the right.
  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: 50-50 chance. I voted for it being Wilson on the right because I seem to recall him looking rather boyish. I hereby identify myself!
  24. Ask him about bringing Asian players to Mets.
