    We can check the beads... At a glance, it looks like Luis Rivera saw little action, but I'm not sure how much he might have expected to see. Dallas Green managed the Mets for four years, but never had a full 162-game season.

    Also, when everyone sounds as crazy as you are (even if they really aren't) it can validate your feelings and make your insane actions seem more reasonable. And that can be the tipping point between thoughts and action. How about we do our part by not calling for the assassination of any Mets*, even in jest? *Or anyone else!

    What happened in Tuscon the other day makes me wonder if it's inevitable that some crazed fan won't some day try to assassinate an unpopular local athlete. The sports rhetoric on the Internet and on the radio (and in the ballpark) can be every bit as bad, if not worse, as what we get from Washington.

    I haven't seen this in a while. (I watched it in 2000 on a transatlantic flight and it kept me nicely entertained.) I'll say 3.5 stars, but it's a fuzzy vote, given that it's been almost 11 years.

    I think he'll play reasonably well in spring training, which will make him just tradeable. He'll be dealt, with about $4 million, and for nothing much, to some other team that suddenly finds itself needing a second baseman.

    My daughter is a nine-year-old girl. Her friends are nine-year-old girls. The kids on the softball team I managed last spring were also in that age group. I'm at a stage of my life where I'm very familiar with nine-year-old girls, and it makes it very easy for me to imagine what that poor kid was like. How anyone could shoot a bullet at a nine-year-old girl is unimaginable.

    This game had seven Mets players in the opposing starting lineup. (And nine in the Mets lineup.) That's the only Mets game that had as many as seven.     I remember how I loved being totally surprised by the acquisitions of Keith Hernandez and Gary Carter. In both cases, there wasn't the slightest hint that anything was coming. I found out about the Hernandez deal from Bob Murphy during a radio pregame, and about Carter the old-fashioned way, from the back page of the newspaper.

    Players go on the DL before Opening Day. There have been plenty of instances where players have been DL'ed in March, during spring training.

    While I don't think he belongs in the Hall, I was a little surprised to see Harold Baines drop off the ballot. He ended up with 2,866 base hits. I remember that late in his career there was a chance that he might reach the magic number of 3,000, and I wondered if that would "punch his ticket" or if he'd become the first 3,000 hit guy (other than Rose, natch) to fail to get to Cooperstown. Do you think he'd have done much better if he had gotten an additional 134 hits? I'd like to think not, but I'm unsure. But I don't think that 3,000 hits has the same cachet that it once did. (There are 27 players who have reached that total. 3,500 would be much more exclusive; only five players have gotten that many: Rose, Cobb, Aaron, Musial, and Speaker.)
