  1. That may very well be. It has a good cast.
  2. I've never really taken the time to understand WAR. I was too old to focus on it by the time it came along. But I'm going to predict that Nimmo's WAR will be less than that of Mark Vientos.
  3. Jason Bay was a disaster. But as stated above, there's really no pattern here. Some players start out strong and remain production. Some start out awful and remain awful. Some start out good and decline. Some start out bad and get better. You really can't use the past in these cases to assume anything about Soto or anyone else.

  6. I'm not at all sold on the idea that players have to "adjust" to New York, but we certainly have seen players, like Lindor and Beltran, disappoint at least to a degree when coming to the Mets, and then bouncing back. Or like George Foster, not bouncing back. Or like Johan Santana, thriving immediately. So who knows? But while it's Soto's first year with the Mets, it's his second in New York, so I think he'll be fine. He's going to put up some very healthy numbers, and if the Mets don't go deep into October it won't be his fault.
  7. I've liked him from the beginning, and I think some time in 2022 he became my favorite Met. It was great watching him kick it up another few notches in 2024. Will he recapture the magic in 2025? That's hard to say, but I'm confident that as long as he's on the field he'll show skill, hustle, and leadership. That deal with Cleveland may have been the best trade the Mets have made so far this century.
  8. The only one I've seen, so far, is Conclave. (Just last week, on Peacock.) It was good, but it didn't really smell like a Best Picture.
  9. He wasn't traded because he was bad. He was traded, both times, because he was so good he would be too expensive to sign. That issue, obviously, has been resolved.
  10. I was thinking the disinterest was maybe because Iglesias tailed off at the end of the year, but my memory is definitely faulty on that count. In 26 regular-season games in September/October, he slashed .371/.402/.443. And his postseason numbers weren't bad either. Not as good as his regular season, but nothing that should have raised any alarms.
  11. You missed some bad-to-mediocre seasons!
  12. =Gwreck post_id=185931 time=1740440470 user_id=56] I think I once wrote a CPF song parody about not being able to remember Doc Edwards, bench coach in 1990-1991.
  13. Mazzilli returned to the Mets during the 1986 season and won a ring that year.
  14. He did that to me once. Spilled my Coke Zero all over my lap. Pissed the hell out of me. I said, "Hey, John Mitchell of the 1987 Mets! Find your own seat!"
  15. And Jose Quintana edges closer to his phone.
  16. Once I started paying attention to the Mets, in 1971, I never really stopped, so I'll have to go with one of the before-my-time guys. Put me down for Ron Swoboda.
  17. It may not be as good as we'd like, but I don't think it will be bad.
  18. I don't think he's so easily placated.
  19. Didn't Willie Randolph put a similar rule into effect when he took over as manager of the Mets?
  20. I saw a Daily News headline that said that Aaron Boone will be managing the '27 Yankees. I'm sure they left out the first two digits of the year so that we couldn't help but think of Murderer's Row. It's hard to believe that we're going to have another round of '27 Yankees. Hopefully this century's version will fall far short of the one from a hundred years earlier.
  21. I may have been the first person to play today. I picked Joel Youngblood as a Mets All-Star and that got a score of 100. Jose Reyes as an All-Star pitcher? 100! Now, when I refresh the page, I get more reasonable scores. My 900 is now down to 121. 22. He could have followed Carlos Beltran's lead and bought his teammate a nose job.
  23. Did Al Leiter have to buy number 22 from anyone?
  24. From the IRS website: Who pays the gift tax? The donor is generally responsible for paying the gift tax. Under special arrangements the donee may agree to pay the tax instead. Please visit with your tax professional if you are considering this type of arrangement. What is considered a gift? Any transfer to an individual, either directly or indirectly, where full consideration (measured in money or money's worth) is not received in return.
  25. =G-Fafif post_id=185655 time=1740076108 user_id=55] Al Leiter, Ray Knight and the estate of Donn Clendenon oughta be getting residuals.
