  1. I'm not sure what Beltran's chances are. After that, maybe Cespedes? (Typing this with my fingers crossed, which isn't easy!)
  2. If Bonds and Clemens get in, I'll never go to Cooperstown again. (I say this knowing that even if they don't get in, I'll probably never go to Cooperstown again anyway.)
  3. If we were to make a list of Mets players whose names sound most like something out of Harry Potter, then I think I'd start with Esix Snead.
  4. This hotly contested battle has ended, and METS FIND NIMMO emerges victorious. The Post's path to victory narrows a bit more with this loss. They've only secured one of the eleven Sweet Sixteen spots that have been settled so far. That one cover, however, is the highly regarded SEEDS OF LIFE, so things aren't looking entirely gloomy for the Post. Three other Post covers are still alive, and are in polls where voting continues: GAME SETH MATCH, T.J. MAXX!, and YO GOTTA BE KIDDING!
  5. I guess you trade him if the right deal comes along, because the Mets do have depth at that position. (I'm thinking Reyes and Flores and, I suppose Reynolds. I'm pretty sure the Mets don't want to promote Rosario until around May 1, 2018.) But I want him to stick around.
  6. I'd like to think (although I have no evidence for this) that they want to get back to $140 million as a baseline but then be willing to add salary during the season for whatever kind of upgrade they may need.
  7. In a battle of Yoenis Cespedes covers, CES BOOM BAH wins easily over YO AND BEHOLD to become the fifth Daily News cover to join this year's Sweet Sixteen. Reminder: The Tabloid Cover Derby is on a break until early January when third-round voting will begin. However, there are still six second-round threads that remain open for voting.
  8. I did a Google News search on McCutchen to see how widespread this McCutchen-Mets thing is, and to see if the noise is coming exclusively from New York or if there's similar buzz in Pittsburgh too. My take is that we're seeing speculation that's feeding on itself in New York, and there are a few echoes in Pittsburgh, but it doesn't look like there's much to it, at least at this point.
  9. I'll be pretty surprised if he ends up as a Met, but perhaps quite not as surprised as I would have been two or three weeks ago.
  10. bmfc1 wrote: The level of analysis that Benjamin Grimm and the CPF voters bring to this "derby" is wonderful. Thank you!
  11. It's early yet, but this may turn out to be our first unanimous poll. Last year we had three polls where there was a lone dissenter: In Round 2, U DA MAN! defeated HARV DAY'S NIGHT 15 to 1 and CON4TO! defeated AMAZIN' MATZ 14 to 1. And in Round 3, TEAM OF DESTINY defeated METS TAKE A HIT 11 to 1.
  12. And I have a feeling that this particular poll is going to end up rather lopsided. Arguably the best moment of the season up against the worst.
  13. This is the final poll of the second round, and also the final poll that will be posted until after the New Year. The Tabloid Cover Derby will return in early January with the third round, in which our field will be reduced from sixteen covers to eight.
  14. Winner of Round 1.4.5 11th HEAVEN Newsday, September 22, 2016. A come-from-behind 11th inning three-run homer by Asdrubal Cabrera gives the Mets an exhilarating win over the Phillies. Winner of Round 1.4.7 ALL TOO FAMILIA New York Daily News, October 6, 2016 Jeurys Familia gives up a three-run homer that gives the Mets a loss in the National League Wild Card Game.
  15. Another Newsday cover advances to the third round; this is the fourth to do so and Newsday has won four of the last six matchups. Nine of the "Sweet Sixteen" positions have been secured: Four for the Daily News, four for Newsday, and one for the New York Post. The last remaining Jacob deGrom cover has ousted the last remaining Jose Reyes cover, which means that Jose's picture will not be hanging high above Maja's desk.
  16. Only one of them, YOU GOTTA RELIEVE!, is still alive in our competition. None of the others made it out of the first round, although I had high expectations for CES WE CAN! and FOUR! "Sellouts" and GOD HELP US didn't do at all well here. "Sellouts" only got 3 votes in the first round, and GOD HELP US only got 2.
  17. So far I'm the lone HAIR vote. I chose that one because the player is more prominent on that cover. On T.J. MAXX, Rivera is buried under the headline and confined to the top left corner of the cover.
  18. Pardon our snafu... The original version of poll 2.4.3 accidentally pitted THE HAIR APPARENT! against the Daily News cover BRONX BOMBER, which had been eliminated in the first round. The proper opponent for the Gsellman cover should have been the New York Post's T.J. MAXX! The original thread has been locked. If you voted in that thread, please be sure to vote again in this replacement thread. We do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Now I'm afraid I'm going to be on the phone all day with the Stockholm office trying to explain how this happened. What a way to start the week!
  19. Winner of Round 1.4.1 THE HAIR APPARENT! New York Daily News, September 4, 2016 Robert Gsellman shows that the Mets have yet another long-haired starting pitcher that they can count on. Winner of Round 1.4.3 T.J. MAXX! New York Post, September 14, 2016 T.J. Rivera homers and drives in three as the Mets beat the Nationals 4-3 in Washington.
  20. SULTAN swaats away the lone remaining Curtis Granderson cover from the competition.
  22. I would guess that everyone here is old enough to remember 2008!
  23. Newsday's IN A PINCH advances to the third round. Newsday covers have won three of the last four polls that have closed. Our "Sweet Sixteen" now has seven covers: three each from Newsday and the Daily News and one from the Post.
  24. Winner of Round 1.4.2 GAME SETH MATCH New York Post, September 5, 2016 Seth Lugo gives up one run in seven innings in a 5-1 Mets win over the Nationals. Winner of Round 1.4.8 HOPE New York Daily News, November 8, 2016 The Daily News spoofs the iconic 2008 Obama campaign poster with this image of Yoenis Cespedes.
  25. I also went with YO GOTTA BE KIDDING. The expression on Yoenis' face goes perfectly with the headline.
