  1. Thank you, but what makes you think that these aren't actual photos?
  2. Maybe they're holding back this year so that they can go big for someone like Bryce Harper next year. I really don't think that's the case, but who knows? Maybe?
  3. I'm not so sure about #2. Marc Carig frequently appears on SNY, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if John Harper of the News criticized the Mets for their cheapness. I'm pretty sure he's done so in the past. And here it is: Mets better spend on free agents if they want to win, because there’s not much immediate help on the way Not so much an explicit criticism of cheapness, but a call to spend. But he does say this: John Harper wrote: As I’ve been writing since last fall, there is no way the Mets can justify not spending significantly on free agents this off-season in this win-now window of theirs that is still open if they ever get lucky with injuries.
  4. I was at that Sunday doubleheader sweep. I remember the Mets were shut out in the first game, and didn't score a run in the second game until around the eighth or ninth inning.
  5. 1984 was a lot of fun, but the fun ended rather early that year. I know I could look it up, but I'll go on memory here. Didn't the Cubs sweep a four-game series at Shea around August 1, which allowed them to open up a pretty comfortable gap in the standings? At least in 1985, the excitement lasted into early-October regular season games. I still remember watching Darryl Strawberry's home run in St. Louis. I was sleeping over at my grandmother's house because my home was still without power from Hurricane Gloria.
  6. Can you imagine how we'd be feeling now, if everything since then turned out the same, except that Gary Carter struck out in the tenth inning of Game Six?
  7. 1969 was before my memory, but I agree that the regular season of 1985 was more fun than the regular season of 1986. But 1986 didn't leave any kind of bad taste in my mouth. Those Mets lived up to everything we could ask of them. The bad taste kicks in during the subsequent seasons.
  8. THORRIBLE, for the record, was a New York Post cover that was narrowly eliminated in the first round by GOD OF BLUNDER: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=26206
  9. Yeah, it's just awful. I have great memories of Keith on the baseball field, and he's often entertaining in the broadcast booth, but he's always struck me as a pseudo-intellectual with the potential to be a jerk. Remember how he reacted to that woman in the Padres dugout? And I was never, ever, convinced that he was any kind of an expert on the Civil War.
  10. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: TCD voters have gone against me plenty before so I know this will be an unpopular stance but I want this contest to highlight the stories that best illustrated what it was like to get back-page Mets news in 2017 and a shot of Cespedes doing something good was mostly not that. It was practically a freak occurrence. The Harvey cover sucks for many reasons but it's not Fake News. Those are good points, and HARVEY WALLBANGERS certainly is more appropriate for the 2017 season than TRESPEDES is. But even a bad year (as 2017 certainly was) will have at least a few good-news covers, and a bad-news cover is unlikely to ever win this competition. GOD OF BLUNDER is our other remaining bad-news cover, and it's also facing steep odds.
  11. TRESPEDES certainly fits in with our previous two winners: Daily News covers featuring Yoenis Cespedes along with a play on his last name. (YES-PEDES in 2015 and CES BOOM BAH! in 2016) Will this combination prove to be magical a third time in a row? It's looking at least like TRESPEDES has a good shot at the Final Four.
  12. Winner of Round 1.0.9 Winner of Round 2.1.2 HARVEY WALLBANGERS Newsday, May 13, 2017. Matt Harvey gets clobbered by the Brewers in Milwaukee. Winner of Round 1.0.5 Winner of Round 2.1.1 TRESPEDES New York Daily News, April 12, 2017. Yoenis Cespedes hits three home runs in a 14-4 win over the Phillies in Philadelphia.
  13. Word! For me it's 1985 and 1986 for the same reason. Although October 2015 was a hell of a ride.
  14. Maybe he just did that to antagonize Mike Pence.
  15. Me neither. If I were Keith Hernandez, I wouldn't go anywhere near that asshole's New Year's Eve party.
  16. And the Wikipedia people used the same alternative spelling of "without".
  17. He was probably attracted by their superior school system.
  18. Saginaw Hall of Famer, former Major Leaguer Al Luplow dies

  20. I've seen estimates that the Mets may be worth $2 billion. Back in 1980, the Doubleday-Wilpon group purchased the team for $21 million. If I had known how much the value of the team would appreciate, I would have bought the team in 1980 for $21 million, even though I was 17 years old and broke. Maybe our best hope is that after Fred is gone, Jeff might decide that he'd rather have $2 billion than a baseball team.
  21. Do all Pirates caps have a brim with a flowery underside?
  22. That was a great night. And the parachute guy wasn't even the most memorable part.
  23. Is that Hugh Hefner's girlfriend Barbi Benton on Torre's left?
  24. Man, if I had sideburns like that, the rest of the world could just kiss my ass.
