  2. I saw something somewhere that mentioned deGrom as a "leading Cy Young" candidate. I don't imagine we've ever had a Cy Young winner (except perhaps for a reliever?) who had a losing won-lost record, but I suppose that now that wins and losses are no longer regarded as accurate measures, such a thing may be possible. But it still seems like an unlikely thing to happen.
  3. Bumping this to the current page. Cast your vote!
  4. And I suppose that opting to keep Wheeler is a sign of an intent to try to contend in 2019. But even with deGrom, Syndergaard, and Wheeler the rotation is still pretty shaky. Matz may be a contributor, but that seems extremely iffy. I think they'll have to get another arm from outside the organization. Hopefully someone better than Jason Vargas. I hear that Tommy Milone had a pretty good start the other day...
  5. I've been wondering if the Mets would* consider making a run at free agent Daniel Murphy this winter. Since he'll be 34 when the season starts, which means that his best years are likely behind him, he seems exactly like the kind of guy who would tempt them. *Note that I'm saying would and not should.
  6. This game may have broken Baseball Reference. It's simply not listed on the Mets page for "Schedule & Results" nor is it listed among the other game results from July 31 on the home page.
  7. Maybe Mickey is managing for his future, not for the team's future. He may figure that the more games he wins, the more likely he is to come back next year. But I agree with CF. Let the veterans be pinch hitters. Let the young kids play.
  8. Thanks! I do take my ketchup seriously.
  9. Voting for the games played between July 1 and July 15 will close on Wednesday, August 8. If you're on the list below with a 14 next to your name, you're all caught up on the games that are about to close. If not, and if you're so inclined, please try to get your votes in over the next week. Benjamin Grimm 14 Vic Sage 14 G-Fafif 14 Kongsuds 14 Ashie62 1 sharpie 1 Centerfield 1
  10. The Washington Post wrote: Leading off the second inning Tuesday night, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp roped a double to left field. After Kemp strolled into second base, American League shortstop Manny Machado pulled a phone from his pocket and snapped a selfie of himself and Kemp. They were technically opponents, and Machado wore a Baltimore Orioles cap, but both men knew they were virtually teammates. Do players typically play in the field with their cell phones in their pockets? Or just in casual exhibition games like this one was?
  11. I picked 27 wins because it's closest to the .400 that I was thinking of. I'll pick deGrom as the best SHAM pitcher, and, I don't know, Conforto as the MVP. I'd pick Cabrera, but he's likely in his final days. I thought about going with Nimmo, but that seems like too trendy a pick.
  12. Hey Schaefer voters! I'm flying to South America tonight and won't return until the end of the month, so the voting for the first week or so of games played after the All-Star break will have to be delayed. We do apologize for any inconvenience, and once again thank each of our remaining voters for hanging in there!
  13. Edgy MD wrote: I checked two different stories on the Hader incident, and neither of them quoted the tweets, even with redactions — or even characterized the content. Newsday described the tweets as "homophobic and racist".
  14. The latest unconfirmed reports say he'll be traded to the Dodgers right after the All-Star game. Imagine if he breaks his leg during tonight's game.
  15. I'm going further south this time, if that helps.
  16. I'm going to do my part. Tomorrow I'm leaving for South America. Hopefully that will work as well as it did in 2015.
  17. That shirt will make less sense in November, after the Mets have just completed the most improbable championship comeback in history.
  18. That totally blew my mind!
  19. Buster Olney reporting that the Orioles are working on the final details of a trade. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24119742/baltimore-orioles-deal-place-manny-machado-working-specifics-trade Phillies? Dodgers? Diamondbacks? Brewers? I certainly don't want him to be a Phillie over the long-term, but if they deal their best prospects for Manny and then lose him over the winter, that would be okay.
  20. There certainly are fans who are growing disconnected. I'm sure that's been happening throughout history. The question is, are the number of younger enthusiastic fans sufficient to replace those who are losing interest? I suspect they probably are. Even if the absolute numbers are lower (and I have no idea whether or not this is the case) I think it's likely enough to sustain the game (or more accurately, the industry) for a long time to come.
  21. If I believed it, I'd be upset with this recent buzz that Mickey is safe until at least next year's All-Star break. If the Mets pick a GM from outside the organization I expect Mickey will be gone. And he may be gone even if they don't.
