    I suppose if you do Salt Lake City instead of Nashville, the Reds could move into the division with the Braves and the Florida teams, the Brewers can then join the Cardinals and the Chicago teams, the Royals could join the Twins, Tigers, and Blue Jays in what would be the weirdest division, and the Salt Lake City Bees would be with the Rockies and the Texas teams. I'm not sure that's much better, but it's different!

    I agree with the above post from FK. The East/West thing is a key part of the plan and it almost certain to be part of the final realignment. It's not all bad; I like that it means that the Mets will never have a postseason game that starts at 10 p.m. (Not that that's happened very often; I think the last time was either 1999 in Phoenix or 2000 in San Francisco.) And I also agree that four divisions of eight teams each is a lot better than eight divisions of four. If there are still going to be twelve postseason teams (and there certainly won't be fewer) then the four division winners would get the first round bye. This is also an improvement, as currently two division winners each year are forced into the Wild Card round. Each league would have two division winners and four wild cards. I don't know if they'd abandon the league names of National and American. They might as well. Let there be a Jackie Robinson League (for the West; he's from California) and a Roberto Clemente League for the East. It would start a new tradition and would piss off a lot of bigots.

    I actually think this makes a lot of sense. The Mets (the only team I care about) wouldn't be playing any post-season games on the West Coast in any of the rounds prior to the World Series.

    I think there would be an Eastern League MVP and a Western League MVP. And Cy Young, Rookie of the Year, etc.

    I think Manfred wants the expansion and realignment to happen this decade. I guess we'll see...

    I just read an article about what Manfred said. It sounds like the plan is to have an Eastern League and a Western League. (Or more likely, an Amazon League and a Microsoft League, or something to that effect.) But no more National or American League. There would be sixteen teams in each league. I don't know if that would mean eight divisions of four teams each, but if so, the Mets would probably be sharing a division with the Yankees, Red Sox, and Phillies.

    When the Mets bring up a highly rated prospect, there's always the potential that he'll be the last player to wear whatever uniform number is assigned to him. Given that, the number should be chosen with care. So what number should Nolan McLean be assigned? I looked at the current numerical roster at https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYM/2025-uniform-numbers.shtml The most suitable numbers that are unclaimed (and unretired) seem to be 21, 26, 40, and 45. I've seen photos of McLean in a number 13 Mets jersey, but that's currently assigned to Luis Torrens. Other good numbers are currently assigned to less prominent players who are currently inactive, such as 19 (Jose Siri), 29 (Jared Young), 30 (Hayden Senger), 32 (Max Kranick), 33 (A.J. Minter), 49 (Chris Devenski). I'd give him 30. It was the number that belonged to the only other Met pitcher named Nolan, and he turned out pretty well.

    If we really care about wins, we can reduce the starting pitcher requirement from five innings to four. Or three. It wouldn't be even close to being the stupidest innovation we've seen in recent years. I really think the win should be more at the discretion of the official scorer. If a starter goes eight scoreless innings, and the reliever allows the game to be tied and then is still in the game when the winning run scores, he gets the win. The scorer should have the ability to override that.

    AI really is very useful, but you can't take what it gives you on absolute faith. It's better to only use it as a starting point.

    There's been talk that Ryan Clifford may be the first baseman of the future. That may or may not prove to be the case, but I doubt he'll be ready to take the full-time job in April of 2026. I don't see Lindor at first base in 2026.

    In April it looked like the sky would be the limit for Pete this winter. I'm not surprised that he didn't keep up that pace, but his numbers have been a bit less spectacular since then. Before May 1, he was .343/.474/.657. And since May 1, over a course of 84 games, he's been .238/.305/.456. This is very comparable to his 2024 numbers of .240/.329/.459 We can be pretty certain he's going to opt out, and this winter he'll be a year older than last year (as will we all) and he won't have a QO. But will he once again turn out to be more valuable to the Mets than to anyone else? I really don't know, but in a little over two months this is going to be a hot topic again.

    I wonder if it's inevitable that this will creep up to the big league level. Maybe some day the White Sox will become the Deep Dishes and the Giants will become the Sourdough Hair Flowers.
