  1. I really liked Cloverfield, and District 9 was cool. I thought Wall-E was awful. I loved Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and I agree that X-Men: First Class is the best of the X-films. (I hope Days of Future Past keeps the mojo going.) Avatar was okay, I guess, but a bit too pretentious (and too lengthy) for me. I would have guessed that Hellboy and Unbreakable were 20th Century films. They seem like a long time ago.
  2. I voted 5 too. I liked it, but I guess I'm more willing to suspend my disbelief for super soldier serums and Norse gods and gamma-ray monsters than I am for vast hidden conspiracies. It definitely had its moments, but Cap's first movie was better than his second movie.

  4. Have we back at the point where a guy can report to spring training bigger and stronger than before without us having to wonder what might be in his urine?
  5. Movies I've seen are in bold. I've seen 62 of the 87. There are four more (in red text) that I have on my TiVo that I'll probably watch in the next few months. 2013 - "12 Years A Slave" 2012 - "Argo" 2011 - "The Artist" 2010 - "The King's Speech" 2009 - "The Hurt Locker" 2008 - "Slumdog Millionaire" 2007 - "No Country for Old Men" 2006 - "The Departed" 2005 - "Crash" 2004 - "Million Dollar Baby" 2003 - "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" 2002 - "Chicago" 2001 - "A Beautiful Mind" 2000 - "Gladiator" 1999 - "American Beauty" 1998 - "Shakespeare in Love" 1997 - "Titanic" 1996 - "The English Patient" 1995 - "Braveheart" 1994 - "Forrest Gump" 1993 - "Schindlers List" 1992 - "Unforgiven" 1991 - "The Silence of the Lambs" 1990 - "Dances With Wolves" 1989 - "Driving Miss Daisy" 1988 - "Rain Man" 1987 - "The Last Emperor" 1986 - "Platoon" 1985 - "Out of Africa" 1984 - "Amadeus" 1983 - "Terms of Endearment" 1982 - "Gandhi" 1981 - "Chariots of Fire" 1980 - "Ordinary People" 1979 - "Kramer vs. Kramer" 1978 - "The Deer Hunter" 1977 - "Annie Hall" 1976 - "Rocky" 1975 - "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" 1974 - "The Godfather Part II" 1973 - "The Sting" 1972 - "The Godfather" 1971 - "The French Connection" 1970 - "Patton" 1969 - "Midnight Cowboy" 1968 - "Oliver!" 1967 - "In the Heat of the Night" 1966 - "A Man for All Seasons" 1965 - "The Sound of Music" 1964 - "My Fair Lady" 1963 - "Tom Jones" 1962 - "Lawrence of Arabia" 1961 - "West Side Story" 1960 - "The Apartment" 1959 - "Ben-Hur" 1958 - "Gigi" 1957 - "The Bridge on the River Kwai" 1956 - "Around the World in 80 Days" 1955 - "Marty" 1954 - "On the Waterfront" 1953 - "From Here to Eternity" 1952 - "The Greatest Show on Earth" 1951 - "An American in Paris" 1950 - "All About Eve" 1949 - "All the Kings Men" 1948 - "Hamlet" 1947 - "Gentleman's Agreement" 1946 - "The Best Years of Our Lives" 1945 - "The Lost Weekend" 1944 - "Going My Way" 1943 - "Casablanca" 1942 - "Mrs. Miniver" 1941 - "How Green Was My Valley" 1940 - "Rebecca" 1939 - "Gone with the Wind" 1938 - "You Can't Take It with You" 1937 - "The Life of Emile Zola" 1936 - "The Great Ziegfeld" 1935 - "Mutiny on the Bounty" 1934 - "It Happened One Night" 1932/1933 - "Cavalcade" 1931/1932 - "Grand Hotel" 1930/1931 - "Cimarron" 1929/1930 - "All Quiet on the Western Front" 1928/1929 - "The Broadway Melody" 1927/1928 - "Wings" Would happily watch again: Casablanca - one of the few movies I can watch again and again. I probably watch it every few years. Wings - have only seen it once, but would like to see it again. It Happened One Night - fun movie. Mutiny on the Bounty - love it! Charles Laughton is fantastic in this. I'd guess I've seen it five times. The Bridge on the River Kwai - terrific movie. I've seen it three times, I think. The Godfather Rain Man The Artist - as a silent movie fan, I got a kick out of it. Once was enough: Gigi - I like Maurice Chevalier, but his "Thank Heaven For Little Girls" number is nothing but creepy by today's standards. And much of the rest is awful. An American in Paris - Gene Kelly's most self-indulgent movie. The 17-minute dance number drained my energy. West Side Story - not bad, but not worth a rewatch. The Departed - a lot of style, but not satisfying. Jack Nicholson is on the other side of the shark in this one. Gandhi - not a bad movie, but too long to sit through a second time.

  7. I watched Kim Novak just the other day in one of her much lesser known movies, Boys' Night Out, a kind of amusing little picture from 1962 with James Garner and Tony Randall. I didn't watch the Oscars, so I didn't see what she looks like at 81. I'm curious, but don't know if I want to try to track down an image.
  8. I can understand not despising Kevin McReynolds, but he does seem like a strange choice for a favorite Met.
  9. I didn't know until about two days ago that this was Oscar weekend. I love movies, but don't much care about the Oscars.
  10. I get all the movies I need (and more) from cable. I love TCM, but there are also good channels like EPIX and HDNET that show more recent movies. (And of course, HBO and Showtime and all those channels.)
  11. The movie was okay, but I don't think it's good enough to be a Best Picture winner. The only other nominee I've seen so far is Gravity, and I liked that a lot more than American Hustle.
  12. How did they do on the scoreboard?
  13. Were the college buddies frightened?
  14. I don't know how you'd categorize What's Up Tiger Lily? but I thought it was hilarious.
  15. This movie came out and I had no idea it was coming. With my youngest now 12 and a half, I realize that I'm now out of the loop when it comes to entertainment for younger kids. I remember years ago I had a co-worker whose youngest child was just a couple of years older than my oldest, and she had no idea who Spongebob Squarepants was. Now I think I'm in that situation; I have no idea what newer shows the six-year-olds of the world are watching. The best thing about this is that I don't have to spend money to go see a movie about Lego.
  16. Of his recent movies, the only one I've seen is Midnight in Paris and that one wasn't bad. Before that, I think the last one I saw was The Mighty Aphrodite. Just last week, I watched Play it Again, Sam (from 1972) and it was pretty good. A few really funny laugh-out-loud moments.
  17. I didn't see the movie, so I don't know if it was any good, but I kinda was expecting some nominations for Lee Daniels' The Butler (despite its stupid name).
  18. I've seen American Hustle and Gravity. Loved Gravity, was mildly entertained by American Hustle. (I agree with Vic, it's very much overrated.) Of the others, I definitely would like to see 12 Years a Slave and Nebraska. And I'm kinda curious about Her. I may eventually watch Wolf of Wall Street but after The Departed I've had more than enough of Martin Scorsese. (Although I liked Hugo a lot.) I knew Meryl Streep would be nominated for August: Osage County. I haven't seen the movie, but it was a completely predictable choice. I think I'll be rooting for Sandra Bullock in that category.
  19. Dr. Zhivago seemed about an hour too long for me. Would have been much better if it was shorter. Fiddler on the Roof was great. In that case, I didn't mind the length at all.
  20. 1. Bambi 2. I can't think of anything at all.
  21. I've watched lots and lots of movies, but somehow I keep missing Peter O'Toole. I have seen Lawrence of Arabia, (and I saw him in The Tudors) but that's about it.
  22. I don't know what to think about Guardians of the Galaxy. I mainly enjoy these movies because of my childhood attachment to the characters. These Guardians are all strangers to me.
  23. I liked it a lot too. Nice to see a movie with great special effects that also has suspense and characterization.
  24. I enjoyed it, and was satisfied that they did a pretty good job. The attack on Asgard was a long stretch of special effects that made me feel like I was watching a video game. (That's not a good thing.) But other than that, it was fun. And I agree, better than the first Thor movie.
  25. Yes, a character as big as Batman can withstand a bad movie or a bad performance a lot better than a lesser character, like Daredevil or Green Lantern can. If those two guys were real, they'd probably be suing their agents.
