  3. Here they are, the 16 first-round winners. The New York Post comes out strong, making a bid for its first Tabloid Cover Derby title. We have seven covers from the Post, six from the Daily News, and only three from last year's champion, Newsday. We have YOPENERS and YOPENING and NOPENING. We have WHAT A TREAT and WHAT A NIGHT. Two covers for Tom Seaver and three for Yoenis Cespedes and one for Carlos Beltran, the three of whom played a combined total of eight games for the Mets in 2020. We have two covers devoted to the outside of Citi Field and one that shows seats filled with cardboard cutouts. Second-round voting will begin on Monday. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_01.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_02.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_03.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_04.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_05.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_06.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_07.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_08.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_09.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_10.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_11.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_12.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_13.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_14.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_15.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2020/1_16.png>

  9. You know, I'd love to be able to answer that, but observers haven't been able to get within 35 feet of those who count the votes. If you want to know more, you can go right to the source and ask the horse. He'll give you the answer that you endorse. Problem is, the horse only speaks Swedish.
  10. The Mets have stated that they prefer to use money to acquire players than prospects, so I doubt that they'd go for this. I think Bauer is more likely.
  11. Would there be another day of the 1st round or would that be considered for the 2021 Derby? The beat goes on. These will be the first three covers presented in the first round of the 2021 Tabloid Cover Derby: http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2020/20201124_NSD_02.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2020/20201124_NYDN_02.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2020/20201124_NYP_02.jpg>
  12. I've read in at least two places that the prospect most likely to be able to help the Mets in 2021 is Thomas Szapucki. 24 years old, probably would have spent much of 2020 in Binghamton, but as it is, he's only pitched one game in AA and none in AAA.
  13. The Mets have an acting GM in Sandy Alderson. I don't think any free agents are likely to slip by during this period of time.
  14. I hate the DH too, but I have to admit I got used to it. It makes the game less interesting, and I got used to the less interesting game. Also, I despise the automatic runner on second base thing even more, so that probably distracted a little bit of the bile from the DH rule. I think I've come to accept, sadly, that the DH is inevitable. It may recede in 2021 but I fully expect a full DH to be part of the next CBA in 2022.

  17. I remember when I first heard his name. It seems like it was about 30 seconds ago!
  18. Sandy has pretty much admitted that the Mets are weak in the upper ranks of the farm system, so it's very possible that they decided that there was nobody of value that they were at risk of losing in the Rule 5, and yes, they are pretty certain to add some free agents so they'll need some open roster spots. How many spots are currently open? They can get one more easily enough by cutting Matz loose.
  19. We know that Jeff Wilpon is interested.

  21. My understanding, going forward, is that Brooklyn will outrank St. Lucie.
  22. I go all the way back to Gil Hodges, but I'm not sure I can remember enough details to rank them all. I know that the only two who struck me as smart, and I mean smart-smart, not just baseball-smart, are Davey Johnson and Bobby Valentine. Mickey Calloway was billed as a smart guy, and I was happy at the idea of having a smart manager again. Unfortunately, he didn't live up to the billing.
  23. Nicely done! Now I have a hankerin' for some Drake's Cakes.
  24. You mean in 2019. His ERA was 8.18 in 44 innings in AAA, but only 2.05 in 87.2 innings in AA.
