  1. The quote I remember best from that Game 6 was actually Scully's. (I was at the game, but when I got home that night I watched the tenth inning on videotape.) "The Mets are not only alive; they are well!" I didn't hear Murphy's call until years later.

I know I'm doomed to listen to Phillie announcers tonight, because I'm in Phillie territory, and the feed on MLB Extra Innings will be blacked out. I had to listen to Marlin announcers for all three games in Florida. I've gotten very little SNY for the last month or so, and I miss Gary and Keith and Ron. And Ralph on Fridays.
  3. Daily News says this morning that no long-term discussions have been held with Wright. He and his agent would be receptive, but Mets says nothing's planned yet, since Wright is still a year away from arbitration. Maybe they'll talk over the winter or during the 2007 season.
  4. Johnny Dickshot wrote: There's a team option for a 5th year which I guess is a good deal for the Wilpons. I like that. It means that free agency might actually be delayed until after 2011. (That, by the way, is the final season of Beltran's contract.) Wright is currently eligible to be a free agent after 2010. Hopefully he'll be signed through 2012 before the 2006 season ends.
  5. Ah yes, the famous "deathwatch" thread where we had to assign a specific OBP by a specific date and then give Reyes a specific dollar amount over a specific duration.
  6. I'm just seeing this now.If I remember right, I had a spreadsheet that simply generated a bunch of SQL statements that updated the PHPBB table that stores the ranking info. I then logged in to the admin section (for the domain, not for the board) and pasted the SQL. I'll dig around tonight or tomorrow and see if I can find the spreadsheet.
  7. So that would mean he's signed through 2010? Does that postpone free agency by one year or two? I guess my question is, does he get credit for a full year of service time in 2004? I would think that he would. He didn't play much, but I believe he was on the major league roster the whole year, even though he was disabled. If that's the case, then he'd be eligible for free agency after the 2009 season. So this delays it by one year. Does that sound right to everybody?

  9. ]Strawberry, the Mets' all-time leader in homers (252) and RBIs (733), played for the Mets from 1983-90. He recently remarried and is living in Missouri. He lives in Missouri??? Poor guy. First jail, and now Missouri? ]Strawberry won't be the only high-profile name missing from the celebration. Staff ace Dwight Gooden is serving time in a Florida prison for parole violation. Manager Davey Johnson has a previous commitment, as does 1986 World Series MVP Ray Knight and pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre. Lee Mazzilli and Roger McDowell are coaches with the Yankees and Braves and unable to attend. So iwho's gonna be there? Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling? If Mookie cancels, they might as well call the whole thing off.
  10. Would it have had anything to do with him answering a question that was already answered seven days ago?
  11. He has, but today's not the best day to say that. Somebody said it yesterday (or the day before) and I agreed. And NOW look what happened!
  12. Is Schmidt in his free agent year?
  13. Willets Point wrote: No has noted how this trade further complicates Schaefer voting, adding RHernandez to AHernandez and OHernandez. 3:36 p.m. yesterday
  14. Were there ever three Millers on the team in the same season? I remember when the Mets got Tom Wilson, I posted a listing of most frequently used surnames in Mets history, but that's probably been zapped.
  15. Yeah, I wonder what that's all about, and what it all really means. I think, given the state of the two teams, Glavine would probably prefer to be in New York next year instead of Atlanta. But if Glavine doesn't start pitching better, he may not have that choice to make.
  16. I do think Zito will be way overpriced, but that only helps the Mets chances of getting him. I predict he'll be a Met in 2007. But, as Edgy said, 2006 is more important than 2007 right now. The only reason we spend any time thinking about 2007 is because there's little suspense in the current season right now. We're waiting for October.
  17. I hadn't even considered that he might be on the bubble. If he had been part of the game, the voting would have closed now.
  18. Vic Sage wrote: Will we win the East? Yes. Will we win the pennant? Possibly. Will we win a WS? HIGHLY unlikely. Will we find ourselves in such a good position next year? UNKNOWN AND UNKNOWABLE. I agree with Vic on all but the last question. I'd put another HIGHLY unlikely in place of UNKNOWN AND UNKNOWABLE. They may be solid contenders again next year, but I can't imagine a having another huge lead on August 1. Even the 1986 Mets, a better team than this one, didn't run away again the following season.
  19. You know, if the Mets get to the World Series and lose, I'll be disappointed, but unless that loss is to the Yankees, this would still be a great season for the Mets.
  20. old original jb wrote: I am hoping (without clear justification) that part of Omar's limited approach to the Trade Deadline Pitching Buffet has to do with his secret knowledge that from among Pelfrey/Maine/bannister/Soler/Humber/Oliver, two really have the goods to emerge as unexpected fall heroes this season. By Oliver, I assume you mean Perez and not Darren? Anyway, I doubt that most of the ones listed have much chance of being a postseason hero. Oliver Perez and Humber are 2007 candidates. I think Soler also has had his chance for this year. I'm curious to see what they'll do about Bannister when he's healthy again. Pelfrey's probably pitching for his roster spot tonight. Maine is probably the one with the best chance of pitching in the playoffs, and that can change with a few bad starts.
  21. Glavine needs to turn himself around though. His last good start was quite a while ago now. His ERA from April and May won't help us at all in October. I think he can do it, by the way. He's figured his way out of funks before. Of course, eventually there will be the final slump that he won't emerge from. I hope that this isn't it.
  22. I doubt that. (You may be thinking of Franco.) Valentin was on the retread pile. He wouldn't have had any leverage at all for a two-year deal.
  23. And probably every team that makes the playoffs, which is what really matters. It doesn't do much for me if the Mets have a better starting rotation than Kansas City or Tampa Bay.
  24. I wouldn't necessarily rule out Floyd, if he's willing to sign a one-, or maybe two-year deal.
  25. I went with hate. Smells of panic. Wasn't necessary. The injury to Sanchez weakened the team. I think this deal weakened it a little bit more.
